  1. I am assuming that is an exhaust (stink pipe) for the sewers. I don't think they dug up the old infrastructure yet and I am sure letting gases build up underground is never a good idea.
  2. The continues improvement v academic watch isn't really a good indicator of how the district (or any district) is doing. Remember, last year Lakewood meet 19 of thier indicators v CMSD which meet 4, yet both received the same rating of continues improvement. I call it vodo educational standards. I think raising the graduation rate up 9 points in one year is good progress. Don't get me wrong, 61% is still a terrible number, but you don't turn things around over night and from talking with many CMSD teachers, it seems like most people think the district is headed in the right direction. I think this article from a couple of days ago is a better signifier of what the real problems in the district (and all urban areas) are: http://www.cantonrep.com/index.php?ID=425758&Category=13&subCategoryID=

  4. Here is one for you, Why doesn't downtown Cleveland have a Malley's? It is a Cleveland company and I for one think they have pretty good ice cream / chocolate.
  5. A couple of shots from a bike trip with cd-cleveland The future home of the new convention center The new flats Path to nowhere New Cadillac Ranch bar - really, just knotty pine? Getting ready to demo this old bank for 668 cd-cleveland's good eye caught this one - Refections everywhere West bank was packed tonight Classic Cleveland shot I am fascinated by the Center Street Swing Bridge, which dates back to 1900 Giant gear the bridge swings on BONUS: The gear before it was installed (from clevelandmemory.com) Probably my favorite shot of the group We adventured off the beaten path and played a little by the steel mills At the end of this rail line you can see the "flame thrower" smoke stacks from the steel mill I climbed on the back of a rail car to get this picture
  6. Unless you are dealing with real high end furniture, you are probably deal with a veneer. It doesn't matter the age of the piece either. I have refinished pieces from the 20's that were veneers, granted they were a little thicker back then, but still a veneer.
  7. I have had a lot of success using citrus orange (It’s orange something) from Lowe's. It is non-toxic and you can use it inside. It is a gel you apply, let sit for about 30-45 minutes and take a PLASTIC putty knife and scrape off anything that isn't wood. After that, sand with a 220 and apply your finish. Makes furniture refinishing so much easier. Stain (if you want) and let it sit over night. Remember to get a tack rag and wipe down everything before you stain. Apply your urethane as follows: 1. Urethane first coat and let it sit for a couple of hours and apply a second coat. Let it sit over night. 2. Take 0000 steel wool and “sand” the piece down. Tack rag the piece and apply a 3rd coat. Note this will temporary dull your finish before you add the 3rd coat. 3. I like 4 coats, so I would repeat the previous step, steel wool, tack rag and urethane. 4. Finally get some automotive WET sand paper 1000 or 1500 and WET sand the entire piece down lightly. This will give it a mirror smooth shine. NOTE: The reason why I wouldn't use a hand sander is because your table probably only has a veneer (thin piece of wood) on it. So taking a 40-60 grit piece of sandpaper to it will probably mess it up more than help you out. A veneer is typically less than a 1/16 thick, so you don't have much to work with.
  8. A monument conceived as a tribute to the ideals of Cleveland ~ Builded by her citizens and dedicated to social progress, industrial achievement and civic interest ~ Patriotism Progress Culture
  9. That was more as what I was referring to. I did see the letters and they did a great job at the meeting constantly reminding people of them. My thought was the people at the meetings represented a small percentage of RTA ridership. It would be good to have people set up at the TC, UC, the rapid stations, and any other larger hubs to disseminate letters and information to the masses. On a side note, Voinovich has been one of the only people who has responded back to my letter. He sent a nice 2 page outline of what his office plans to do. I was rather impressed to be honest. Usually it is a standard thanks for your comments and concerns letter.
  10. I went to tonights meeting in Brooklyn. There was about 50 people there and seemed to be better organized than I read the other ones were like. The only people that showed from any office was the mayor from Bay who is running for CC, who spoke first and left immediately and Santiago. Pretty much everyone said the same thing. Don't cut the circular's and we would rather pay more than loose any services. People seemed very concerned (as was I) that a lot of the service to steelyards was being cutting. They had several business from there to speak. I thought they did a good job explaining why the cuts are happening and why they were short money. I would like to see RTA be more aggressive in getting people to write their representatives. On a positive note, any questions anyone asked me or anything I heard someone complain about I had an answer to because of this thread. Go urbanohio !!!

Just a couple of shots from my trip to downtown last night. Probably my favorite one, it looks like an American flag

So I am in Columbus for the next couple of days for an OEA conference. Can anyone recommend some things to do / see while I am down here? I have never really been to the city, so feel free to recommend anything non-osu related.
  14. Any reviews of the event? I went both Friday and Saturday night (10-1) and was a little disappointed in the crowd. They had a great jazz jam band on Saturday for the midnight show and there was only about 15 people there to watch them. More bands and less interactive things than I remember from last year. Overall I was very happy with the event and it was nice to see the health line running up and down the street.
  15. The Buffalo is the same size (634') as the "American Republic" which is a frequent traveler of the Cuyahoga. So unless the Buffalo just seems bigger it is probably another ship.
  16. I agree with you, it was a lot darker than I thought it was going to be. Unfortunately I think it is going to stay that way for at least the rest of this year. I have other projects that I want to start. The horizontal strips are a great idea though, I might incorporate that when I get back around to it. I need to hire you before I make my next color choice
  17. This is second hand information, so take it for what it is worth, but the mills down in the valley are supposedly running over capacity and there is talk of building a new blast furnace and shifting more production to the west side facilities. So I image the larger boats are bringing in larger shipments of coke, which is a great sign...I know Arcelor Mittal is hiring right now and the Cleveland facility was their most profitable mill in the US.
  18. Yeah, I did it all myself. I am a fairly decent drywaller when I want to be. My walls look great, but the I wish I would have stamped the ceiling. You can make out a seem right down the middle. I got sick of doing it and did a poor job. The color, I don't know why I choose it. I saw it in a friends house and thought it would match the golden oak cabinets and ivory tile floor. I really hoping the trim works make the walls stand out. Think it is a little to dark for a kitchen?
  19. A little update on some of the inside work I have done. This is a before and after shot of the dining room / living room. Note that I moved a door into the 2nd bedroom from the living room into the dining room to give it a better flow (I did the same thing to the master bedroom which entered through the kitchen). Before After Here has been the latest project. I gutted the kitchen to the studs and sub-floor. I really wish I would have taken more before shots, but I really underestimated the scope of this project and it ended up being more work than I thought it was going to be. I physically changed the entire layout of the kitchen. I ended up moving a gas line and redoing a lot my plumbing with CPVC. Since I wanted to do everything to code. I ended up running all new electric and upgraded my service box. I am still not completely done. I have to install the trim work and install the wall cabinets, but this is pretty much how it is going to look. (I will update when the work is complete.) Before: After: The next project is knocking out the dining room ceiling and lofting the house. I think its going to look really nice when done and open the house up.

  21. Edison Brothers in Tremont or The Loft "Pizza" in Kent If you are ever by Pittsburgh, there is a little town called Ambridge which has a pizzeria called "Police State Pizza" they have the best pizza I have ever had, period.
  22. Follow up on that story...One cleveland.comer had a good idea (How about that) about a CSU/Clinic partnership...Sounds like a good idea to me With Columbia deal off, Cleveland Clinic make break with CWRU to go on its own Posted by Joan Mazzolini and Janet Okoben July 23, 2008 20:46PM The Cleveland Clinic might break away from Case Western Reserve University to create a new, independent medical school now that an attempt to affiliate with Columbia University has fallen through. Clinic President Toby Cosgrove told his board members Tuesday evening that the Columbia deal is off. Eric Fingerhut, the state's chancellor of higher education, confirmed Wednesday that an independent medical school is one of several scenarios he has discussed with the Clinic in the past year. He's in favor of any arrangement that keeps the Clinic's students in Ohio... http://blog.cleveland.com/medical/2008/07/cleveland_clinic_columbia_univ.html
  23. Technically I guess it is. It was the first township (before Cleveland annexed it) west of the Cuyahoga. I am sure if I am wrong, someone will correct me. http://www.nhlink.net/ClevelandNeighborhoods/plainpress/PPStories/tremonthistory.htm
  24. I went to this tonight. It was a neighborhood walk through of Ward 15, Cleveland’s historic “Brooklyn Centre” neighborhood. We went down Archwood, over to I think 36th, around a little of Denison, 38th, and back down Archwood again. Lot of beautiful homes, but had a couple of abandoned ones as well. Only about 8-10 residents showed up and probably 8-10 city members. I got to meet a lot of the people who do development for the city and Old Brooklyn. Everyone was very nice and generally concerned with the neighborhood and its well being. Jackson didn’t talk, just got a tour of the neighborhood. Nothing really particular exciting about the event, but it was good to go and meet the mayor. Interesting fact, I did learn Brooklyn Centre is the oldest neighborhood west of the river in Cleveland.
  25. I re-read this article a couple of times and I am a little confused...Maybe all the "proposals" are starting to blend together...This proposal is still behind TC right? What's the difference between this and the other 25 proposals FC has submitted, minus they don't own the land now? Am I missing something obvious here?
