Cleveland: Festivals, Music Concerts, & Events
I went down with my brother on Saturday and we both agreed it was for the best our mom wasn't there to see the store our grandmother worked in-she would have cried at seeing it in that state. I do feel there will come a time soon when the May Co. be fully brought back to life. There is too much development in the offing and development abhors a vacuum like what May Co. is today. Ditto. Confusion? I was in gleeful shock when the guy at the tent saw my Tall Ships wrist band and took half off the admission. And absolutely, that should have been a better publicized perk of this very big downtown weekend. Since I missed it last year, I don't have a frame of reference to compare the events or the difference in layout between having it on Euclid or Prospect. I was very pleased at the turnout and the atmosphere. I think they definitely need a better way to publicize individual events. Town Crier would be funny, but maybe as a robot or those guys on stilts or something befitting the art/tech mix theme of the event. I remember an interview with James Levin and Thomas Mulready before the first Ingenuity where they talked about one day extending this into a festival lasting a full week or maybe two. I say great, but not for a few years yet. I think they have to hone there skills at putting together a more cohesive event before attempting stretching it out over a week. Otherwise, it might just look like a bunch of people loitering and no energy. Also, as money begins to percolate into this event from more and more sources as its reputation grows, the diversity and dynamicism will blossom. P.S. Please, for the love of God, do better with the website. The first year's site was head and shoulders above version 2.0-sporadic updating, poor mapping of events, late launch (I was watching). This is the de facto front door to the arts and tech crowd and it needed definite work and better coordination.

The best ideas are the ones which seem so obvious, you're pissed you didn't think of them yourself. Fantastic! And I'm pissed I didn't think of it!

Cleveland-random venting
^I think your experience really underscores the importance of remaking Public Square into a much different space-something that goes beyond just cleaning up trash and curtailing aggressive panhandling at Cleveland's epicenter. There will always be the homeless and panhandlers, but creating a space where activity happens on a continual basis can minimize the thought that it's just you, your friends and three grungy guys with their hands out.

Some Random Stoplight
I don't know what I liked more about this sign: a. That this guy thinks democrats really, literally do support terrorists so much so that he felt it necessary to make a sign for his car. b. That democrats only support one particular terrorist (note the singular) and not a group. Kinda putting all our eggs in one basket if "Frank" the terrorist messes up along the way, but he seems like a can-do guy, so why not? c. That "Liberal-Democats" are supporting the "Terrorist". Sounds like a Disney political system cartoon, with the "Re-Puppy-cans" and the "Democats" fighting it out in the "House of Re-purr-sentatives" I really love this country!

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
I wanna watch SpongeBob! I've been on a couple of trains in Europe that had these on board TVs (I don't know what systems have them domestically) but I wasn't very impressed. Felt like another marketing tool more than anything, but if it provides an additional revenue stream, I'll live with it. The real impressive news was the continuing increase in rail ridership at 8%. Maybe the fuel pinch is making some lifelong converts.

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
I agree with you. In fact, the only time I was ever excited about the convention center being built behind TC was when they had renderings of pedestrian access over the river to a developed Scranton peninsula. THAT is where they should focus getting there pedestrian traffic to fule the mall, along with housing above the parking. But they sit on their hands! Hell, I'd be thrilled if I vould get up to the observation deck on the terminal on a regular basis and not just for anniversaries or special occasions. Public Square, with the hopeful coming of the Stark project and (God-willing) a fourth tower to complete the square, will lose its desperate wasteland aesthetic. Personally, I'd say bury all the traffic and return the square to the style of park they had in the 20's. I saw some picture, maybe here, where the square had bridges over water features and was almost a garden. That's the kind of stuff I wish I had a time machine for.

Cleveland: Wind Turbine Construction News
Saw the turbine spinning for the first time yesterday. It's cooler than I thought! I was suprised by how far away you can see it from coming to the city from east side on I-90. I think I had just past East 55th when I saw it spinning. Now I want more!

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
Civic leaders envision revitalized Public Square Plan includes shops, dining, amphitheater Sunday, June 11, 2006 Tom Breckenridge Plain Dealer Reporter Public Square is a disappointing landmark, pulsing with traffic rather than the human-scale vibrancy its geography and history dictate.
