Ohio Education / School Funding Discussion
Yeah, this take is in the Lazarus hall of fame. That's all that needs to be said.

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
Thanks for the link! I took this and adapted it for Cincinnati-specific needs.

Also, since we have 4 year maps, the new ones aren’t going to be redrawn until late 2025. It’s not the end of the world if the election happens in 2024

Ohio Abortion / Reproductive Health News
Is there really a chunk (6-10%) of the electorate that will change their minds on this vote because the amendment allows for 24 weeks (fetal viability) instead of the "more palatable" 15-20? The answer is no. That's not what's going to have people clamoring for a No vote here. I imagine the confusion from Issue 1 works both ways. We'll see similar turnout and a similar result: 57-43

Cincinnati Southern Railway
I've been a fan of Liz Keating so far this council term, but in the last session they had on the Cincinnati Southern Railroad, she said that the City needs to "diversify its investment portfolio," as a reason the city should sell. How does it get more diverse than owning a recession-proof source of income, like these tracks?

Living Car Free
Let's just say you replaced your Kia Rio with a new one. Let's go with a conservative $18k. Monthly payment somewhere around $250-300 + $75/mo for insurance, + $75/year for fees. Annual cost: 4,000-5,000. Let's just say you buy a bus pass, the suburban one so you can visit your parents: $150/mo. $160/yr for RedBike and Grocery delivery. 10 Uber's per year: $300 Annual Cost: 2,260. So basically half the cost of owning a car. The question becomes: Would you pay $2,500 a year to save yourself some time visiting parents? Is the 30-60 extra minutes (either red bike or bus) it would take to, say, go to Oakley station to visit friends worth the $2,500 a year?

Actually I think it will reverse this time. If Trump is the nominee, they know they have a better "environment" since Trump will in all likelihood bring out pro Issue 1 voters to the polls. I could see a Nov 2024 measure, otherwise, I have no idea how they think this will ever pass.

If they keep the 50% for legislature-driven amendments vs citizen, it wouldn't be hardcoding. But I'm with you. Ultimately these people have political aspirations, and Frank LaRose likely is going to be labeled a loser by his own party and Sherrod Brown. Who would want to step up and own the next potential "loser" title?

Miscellaneous Ohio Political News
LOL. What are we going to put on the ballot to harm family farmers? All that's missing here is a Dean Scream.

Miscellaneous Ohio Political News
Yeah, and the only reason we have to change the Ohio Constitution is because our legislature will undo any common citizen initiative with their own legislation. So, for most changes that the people want, we have to go write it in our constitution with pen.

If it was simply 60% AND it wasn’t rammed through to stop an abortion measure in November, then maybe it would have been closer. I imagine they can’t just try again with a simple measure in the near future. The stink from this loss will be hard to wash off.

You’re obsessed with Twitter warriors, they aren’t the majority of the Democratic electorate… Twitter isn’t real life also social media didn’t exist, so unless you had access to the thought police back then, who knows if some Republicans were thinking that privately.

Miscellaneous Ohio Political News
Yes they could, under issue 1, the legislators could place a 50% amendment on the ballot. Yet again, proving this whole issue 1 process is a naked power grab. If it was about constitutional integrity, the amendment simply would have stated “should the threshold for constitutional amendments be 60%?”
-
Miscellaneous Ohio Political News
On the surface, I could support a 60% threshold. In a vacuum, it might be good governance. but this issue creates a class system, where the legislators can send one that only requires 50%. Also, it essentially makes it impossible to gather the needed signatures anyway, so it’s just taking away an option from the people. They know they have a locked in R majority and this takes any chance of another party making in-roads in the state in the medium term. If they really cared about good governance, this would have been placed on a normal November ballot and just simply state “should constitutional amendments need to pass a 60% threshold?”

Cincinnati: Bicycling Developments and News
I just don't understand the big deal here. As someone who also bikes for recreation, I'd probably never own an electric assist bike. I also realize that Red Bike isn't for recreation. It's to help close the non-automobile transportation gap. To more effectively achieve that goal, electric-assist is absolutely a more palatable option than sweating your buns off trying to get anywhere on those things. Are there more safety issues than a traditional bike? Sure. But it's safer than e-scooters, which is Red Bike's closest comparison, not recreational biking.

Cincinnati: Bicycling Developments and News
Rock climbing is a hobby, RedBikes are for transportation. There’s no comparison to be made here. Electrification is absolutely the right idea for RedBike, we live in a city of hills and electric-assist helps make it a more viable form or transportation in our city.

Cincinnati: Downtown: The Banks
In addition, I imagine they target the proposal towards a younger audience as well. Last I recall "micro-apartments" were proposed for that lot, which is perfect for the just out of college entry-level crowd. Hopefully they stick with micro-apartments for that lot.

Cincinnati: Evanston: Development and News
When reading the City Planning Packet a while back on this one, you could tell this was going to get heated, but it all feels like Ndukwe is astroturfing... and also trying to embarrass a council that he knows is already on thin ice with controversies. It's just incredibly disappointing that no one called him out and they fell right into the trap.

Cincinnati: Evanston: Development and News
Yeah, he's still small potatoes, but he's as corrupt as the big players that were always in Cranley's pocket. I absolutely despise that he brought an army of people to call the pro-preservation council members racist for wanting to try and have this beautiful building preserved. He's doing minorities a disservice by using his race to personally benefit. Oh, and yeah, everything he builds is grade A ugly.

Miscellaneous Ohio Political News
I have no evidence, just hypothesizing that most churches will push a yes vote. I’m not saying it’s going to be a majority of older black people, but that their % of yes votes will be higher than their % of votes for Trump in 2020.
-
Miscellaneous Ohio Political News
I’ll go 58-42 no. I think the church crowds will put up some surprisingly strong turnout for yes, but it’s too little too late. I do think the exit polling is going to be really weird. Like latte-sipping millennials and rural militia types voting no, and country-club 55-yo white guys and older black folks voting yes

Cincinnati: Brent Spence Bridge
Pretty shameful of the chamber here. This feels like a personal vendetta. The chamber should be promoting the option that will benefit the region. Choosing the cheapest, most destructive option does nothing to help the region outside of temporary construction jobs. Bridge Forward has stated they would never want this project jeopardized, but want it to serve as a development opportunity and shorten the span to “reconnect” both sides of the highway. Which would bring in tons of tax dollars and add new space for residents, businesses or visitors. Also, Bridge Forward falls right into what the Biden admin wants an infrastructure project to do (reconnect communities). Now is there risk of the funding being pulled if Biden loses in 2024? Sure, but that’s not worth discussing right now.

Ohio LGBTQ+ News
The only time it makes sense to have gendered bathrooms at all is in high-traffic areas that have hundreds of people at a time. It makes no sense to gender-off bathrooms in stores where maybe one customer goes in every 15 minutes. What if the men's has broken plumbing? Do you swallow your shame and go into the empty women's public restroom?

US Economy: News & Discussion
I don't understand DoorDash for single people or couples without kids. But as a parent with young kids who just aren't having a good day, it's a godsend to be able to have food delivered while dealing with whiny kids at home.

NBA: General News & Discussion
I've always leaned pro-Gatorade, but I do wonder sometimes if they are safe as the manufacturers claim and if they should be so universal. I've always leaned pro-McChicken, but I do wonder sometimes if they are safe as the manufacturers claim and if they should be so universal. I've always leaned pro-oxygen, but I do wonder sometimes if they are safe as the manufacturers claim and if they should be so universal. It literally could be anything he's ingested or been jabbed with in his entire life under this logic... also, people with the body shape of today's 6'8" pt guards are just more likely to have cardiac issues.
