I still don't quite get what the big deal is? I have driven that thing many times and it seems pretty easy to me. I guess I should take into consideration all the people out there that drive slow in the passing lane, turn left from the right lane (not using the turn lane), don't stop at an intersection when the traffic signals are out (it becomes a four way stop), put their turn sugnals on when they get TO the turn instead of before, block the right turn lane when going straight, swerve over two lanes without looking to get to their exit, etc etc etc....
  2. ^ Of course that is a serious statement....look how bad Chicago's waterfront sucks with those damn tall buildings!!!
  3. I think it could be a really good idea...however...I also think that the school districts should stay the same. If my kid (if I had one) were to go to school in the Strongsville school district, I would not want to see them suddenly bused to Lakewood, Beachwood, or Collinwood. Busing didn't really work when it first was instituted...and I doubt it would go over big now. What makes a neighborhood a true neighborhood is knowing who lives there, the children who grow up there, the schools, civic pride, etc etc...Those things make it a livable place. I think what would scare most people is that would somehow all be broken up and the kids would be scattered throughout the city(county). If there would be some sort of definite districting..it may be easier to sell this idea. If not, I doubt many people would be on board for a county regionalization.
  4. Really cool article....but why did some of you think it was so hard to read? The article did kinda punk Cbus out though...now that Cleveland has regained the title of Ohio's "largest" city!

SWEET!!! So now I can start the rumor that this is going to be built....Mov2Ohio confirmed it!!! yay
  6. ^ and the sheer fact that people are more opt to ride rail over bus anyday of the week! I wish RTA would do a public survey as to what the people would prefer. Fact is...biggest advantages for rail: Obvious route destinations, NOT sitting in traffic like buses, and rail is more efficient in inclimate weather...whether it be Clev-Lor rail or extention/addition to the rapid...rail has it ALL OVER buses!
  7. Not to be the nitpicky jackass....but my biggest pet peeve...then and than are not interchangable! :) then: a time reference than: a comparative reference
  8. I would be curious as to why Allega would do this, I would love to hear his side of the story. It doesn't seem to be profitable to pay someone to do work, only to do it yourself. Was there not enough qualified tradespeople to do the work, were there timetable conflicts...what gives? Curious indeed..... I must admit, I am not a big fan of the "Fannie Lewis law" for the reason that some companies may choose not to locate to Cleveland because they don't want to be told who has to build their project ( and to me quota hiring sends the wrong message...you don't need to work as hard in school to get a good job because there will be set asides waiting) This is a tough subject because there are arguments for both sides of this double edged sword. I would rather see things get built, by whomever, and have those companies be here to give permanent jobs to Clevelanders...not just the temporary construction jobs. I know that there was bickering about the ECP because the city wanted to enforce that rule, and it could have cost the city dearly. When gov't money is involved, the city cannot enforce it. I know there is good meaning behind it, but it seems the city is willing, at times, to cut off its nose to spite its face. Let's just get things done, bring businesses in, and get long term jobs for the citizens. Just my opinion.....

I wonder why the original designs would have been "hard for local contractors to build"? Are our local builders THAT inept? interesting....

  12. Tickets sales go to (or mostly) to Cleveland, concessions go to Mil....the reason it wasn't moved to LA is because they have a series with Boston and would require too much travel after the last game...they didn't choose Cincy or similar park is because Mil has a retractable dome.....don't fret, has nothing to do with moving the team...this move makes sense because you can't keep calling these games due to weather. When players have off days into season, the last they want is to travel across the country to make up games by playing (usually) double-headers....they do need time to recoup, heal from injuries, etc....I don't blame the organization for this move..it makes sense. As far as what the Chicagoans think..they can kiss my bean bag! If the same thing happened to them, and they made the decision...it would be a genious move...because it came out of Chicago. How can any city control mother nature? Shit happens...and it did, get over it! Why when this happens to Cleveland it "looks bad" or becomes a joke...like CRAP ESPN said the other day!?!? (the comment about global warming and all other things new, hip, and trendy...hasn't made it to Cleveland yet AND the reference to setting the river on fire again) The real question is, why does the league open in cold weather cities so early in the season?
  13. I am already growing tired of the cute little catch phrase "silver bullet".....one person uses it..now everybody does....maybe we should just say a new convention center would help Cleveland to "bring sexy back"....enough already! On a side note..is there ANY project that would attach itself with a convention center project that would make the masses the least bit happy? Nay to casino gambling...Nay to the medical mart..nay to ____
  14. I went to the commissioner website two days ago and left them all a meesage of displeasure over the suburban style design replacement building they chose to go with.....

I don't see any problem with either "roudabout".....if you can read, then you should be able to navigate it. The roundabout at UC does seem a little srtange to me though...usually the circle traffic is constant and oncoming traffic yields...but not the case there. As for the wrong way driver comment earlier.....I was on the scene the other night when that woman ran head on into that poor guy.....it took forever to cut him out of the car. The woman that was at fault claimed she got on the highway at St Clair...not the roundabout.....maybe the story has chaged since that night?
  16. ^ Unfortunately..it's not part of the project. I was at the West Shoreway meeting a while back and suggested that rail would be a great alternative to reduce traffic....but I guess when I mentioned this I must have grown three heads with the looks I got from the ODOT "planners....it made me sick! Even Westbrook shrugged it off and said that there have been talks of rail, and suggested I contact the people in charge of the Cleveland/Lorain rail project. Nothing, however, seems to be in the near future for the shoreway project. Evey plan that was shown at the meeting was all based around autos...too bad....

Two letters to the editor I sent to the PD: 1) Sunday's article "Transporting development", while hitting many positive notes, leaves more to be desired. Transit Oriented Development is not a new idea and is long overdue in this city/region. If you look to vibrant cities, they boast of great mass transit and development (residential and retail) near it. The Cleveland area has been taught to be so auto centric over the years that it is hard to sell the public on mass transit. People will travel to NYC or Chicago and use their transit systems , but for some reason are hesitant to use it here. With the rising fuel costs, this is an attitude that needs to change. I also believe the attitude of RTA needs to change as well. RTA needs to look to the past to see a better future. It is a shame that the Cleveland subway system was never developed in the 1950's, the street cars were taken out of commission, and our commuter rail system hasn't been expanded throughout the city. We have a great bus system, but buses still wait in traffic. RTA states that rail costs $100 million a mile, yet I see other cities such as Portland, St Louis, Pittsburgh, and Charlotte doing such projects at a fraction of that cost. Cincinnati and Columbus are now actively looking to start up commuter rail and street car systems. Cleveland should look to include these things in new projects that are slated (West Shoreway Project), now is the time to do things right. I challenge RTA to do a public opinion poll. The subject should be what alternate transportation mode would get us out of our cars. Buses and glorified buses (BRT) or light rail and street cars? I have a feeling RTA would be in for a rude awakening! 2) I find it interesting that ODOT finds the need to demolish so many buildings in order to expand the highway system in downtown Cleveland. It seems that ODOT hasn't changed it's style of construction since the 1960's! Why must ODOT always cut a wide swath of land with giant swooping green space (which must be maintained and cannot be used by the public) in oder to build a highway system? For a downtown area this is VERY poor urban planning! When I look at urban highways in other states, I see cement retaining walls with adjacent access roads to save space. In the case of the Cleveland inner belt "trench", why would ODOT not look at making it a true trench, put a cap over the top of it, and actually take back land for use? Some projects may cost more at the start up, but in the long run, it makes more efficient use of the land. It's time we start demanding progressive and sensible ideas from ODOT! The first one is being considered for print and the second one I asked my friend to sign for me since the odds of having two considered for print in one week are pretty slim.

    me too! :(
  20. sort of like this picture off of this site...this is a GREAT angle of Cleveland...(not sure how to properly post pictures yet on here...thats why I haven't posted my own thread yet...not well versed on how to post pics)
  21. Soylent green is people!!!!
  22. ^ I absolutely agree.....unless you are looking at Cleveland from the West Shoreway, or a vantage point from the East (Mayfield Hill) it looks like there aren't many buildings (due to the fact the big 3 dominate)..but when looked at from those two vantage points, I think it looks pretty damn good!
  23. I would like to go..but do you need an invite?
  24. I know the one was in East Cleveland..could tell by the street sign color and the police car in front of the building....GREAT shots though!!!
