  1. Yikes dude. Conservative "safe spaces" are like the Warsaw Ghetto, yeah ok sure. Oof. When were you last in college? Your description of college seems so fox news'esque and disconnected.
  2. When I was hanging in PS looking towards it I'm kind of glad they set it back. Even if Williams' crab shack is lame it won't overpower the other buildings on its left and right vs the tower. I'd recommend standing in the green space on the square and taking it in and I bet it'll grow on ya too.
  3. Ya know? Thinking about it, the potential kind of reminds me of the (former) Hotel Henry (apparently now Hotel Richardson) in Buffalo. It only took up a portion of the sprawling Richardson Olmsted Complex in Buffalo but man that is a cool hotel and a great example of historic reuse. Only downside was due to the nature of the building being a former psych hospital tipsy me got a tad confused when finding our room. I think investment in the community would be a bit more beneficial than putting another bridge over the highway - that area is very quiet on most days that I bike through I don't think capping the freeway will do much. On the other hand, activating the space and giving Tri-C students and CSU students a reason to congregate over there would probably do wonders (wishful thinking I know). FWIW council pushed back on Ronayne's idea saying he couldn't unilaterally say that and needs their approval. What could be possible (with a lot of investment hah): https://www.getawaymavens.com/hotel-henry-history/
  4. The entire place is grandma's basement retro. Kinda silly, kinda unique.
  5. See my Op-Ed edit above. It's dangerous plain and simple. Listen to the Sound of Ideas episode. One example: if you can teach the Letter from the Birmingham Jail but not the reasons behind it is that education? If you need to show the alternative views to King's fight for equal rights, what's the point?
  6. Please tell me your husband at least *slows down* a bit going across the bridge. If anything you're getting real good at capturing this at speed lol
  7. The idiocracy of the bill is discussed around 17 minutes in. The bill is NOT a good thing, period. https://www.ideastream.org/show/sound-of-ideas/2023-05-19/stadium-repair-and-renovation-requests-keep-coming-for-cleveland-and-cuyahoga-county And an Op-Ed from an Ethnic Studies Professor: https://ohiocapitaljournal.com/2023/05/19/making-ethnic-studies-illegal-in-ohio-even-watered-down-sb-83-requires-teaching-racism/ "Because of the way it defines “controversial beliefs,” SB 83 does not require that geography professors describe flat earth theory to keep their jobs. It does, however, require me to teach the “divergent” theory of racial construction, which is that race is a biological, fixed, natural attribute of humankind. It requires me to teach the “divergent” theory of civil rights, which is that the constitution allows for the legal separation of races and that this is a justifiable form of equality. It requires me to teach that the South seceded because it wished to defend states rights against the unlawful aggression of the Lincoln administration, not because it wanted to protect the principle that some humans can be treated as property. The list of what constitutes the “divergent” version of an ethnic studies concept contains many other ugly, false, and dangerous ideas drawn from discredited nineteenth century scientific racists, American Eugenicists, Klansmen, and German Nazis."
  8. So I stopped by Geraci's to grab a slice around 1PM and well, not happening. After talking with a few of the staff they were absolutely slammed at 11AM and waits were about an hour by the time I came through. They're closing until 3 to regroup but they were saying people were generally understandable. And just fyi, slices'll be $5 for cheese and $6 for toppings.
  9. @mermaidlindsay was telling me that it took someone 40 minutes to figure out how to get to Cantanese Seafood last weekend. The city can do better.
  10. Let me rephrase: why would someone attend an Ohio public institution when there are a million different options that don't require a mandatory course on the constitution and the federalist papers or verbiage that is put in to give conservatives a safe space? Why would professors come here? What's the incentive? State schools aren't floating in cash if you haven't noticed - if you add this "US History Course" requirement you're asking broke schools to pretty much hire an entire department just to placate the "fiscally responsible" republicans. Sounds like an unfunded mandate to me.
  11. Who is going to want to come to Ohio at the pace our illegally gerrymandered legislature is moving at? Sound of Ideas had a great episode on why this bill is terrible: https://www.ideastream.org/show/sound-of-ideas/2023-03-17/ohio-senate-bill-takes-aim-at-perceived-bias-in-higher-education.
  12. Frank Jackson was presented with an option to refund the FTA for their portion of the redo of Public Square or (pay nothing) and reopen the bus lane when he had it closed over 'terrorism' issues.

I bought a used Garmin Forerunner 745 used and I've been generally happy with it. Google DC Rainmaker for some intense (and useful) reviews of watches. He puts them through the gauntlet and if you poke around reddit you'll almost always see threads recommending his site.

Snapshot from last week - any biking is good biking. For those in NEO reminder that this month is the Bike Month Challenge in Gohio Commute - NOACA is offering prizes on a weekly basis: https://gohiocommute.com/#/challenges. You can tie this in w/strava and it'll keep track of your rides (and if you mark them as commute, it'll count them towards the challenge).
  15. Powerful event last night. Reminder that tomorrow's the first Bike to Work Day of the year there'll be a big stop in Public Square and a few different stops on the east side (University Circle and a group rolling out from Edgehill and Overlook in CH). More details here: https://www.bikecleveland.org/bike-cle/events/bike-to-work-day-may-2/2023/04/.
  16. Heck yeah, thanks for setting this up as always. Can't wait to see what name @ColDayMan assumes this time around... I'll post some bike routes in here for folks to chew on.
  17. My (cool) ex just sent me the lineup, they knocked it out of the park again. It's definitely niche but they do a good job not just getting people to get people. We were at the last one (2018?) and it was an amazing time.
  18. School choice is a sham. If you want to go to a private/charter school you should pay for it (and pay full school taxes for your district). This is nothing more than shifting public dollars to private entities (and in the case of charter schools, for-profits). https://www.dispatch.com/story/news/2021/09/08/ohio-edchoice-scholarship-private-school-voucher-expansion-lawsuit-legislation/5651293001/ https://www.gse.harvard.edu/news/95/07/studies-show-school-choice-widens-inequality-popular-among-parents-little-evidence Funny how folks who moved to places for the schools now vote down levies because they don't have kids going through the system anymore - the definition of eff you I got mine. Its still happening(!!!): https://www.whio.com/news/local/ohio-catholic-priest-convicted-sex-trafficking-abusing-churchgoing-minors-into-adulthood/NKEPFSTOOBEL7LNSM6FFXGGUTY/ Google 'catholic priest ohio' and have fun with the wool over your eyes.

Listening to American Demon and couldn't help but try and figure things out a little bit. Here's an aerial from 1951 and a Sanborn Map (1927-1937) of the area around Jackass Hill. Pretty much zero remains today with the Opportunity Corridor. Praha in blue, 49th in yellow, 50th magenta. JA hill would be below this. And additional context (before VS bros) a Sanborn from 1912. And finally, present day (2022): Lotta work for a thread that died ten years ago! lol
  20. There's no date on this, but sure would be nice to have some shade on our malls again (I know the convention center below limits things, but still):
  21. Some fun ones in here of 90-00's Cleveland: https://cplorg.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/collection/p16014coll6/id/2221/rec/183 CPC defining good/bad signs around the city.
  22. Yeaaah, I realized after the fact that it was off by a couple years. Here's the official report/breakdown for each taxing district (it links to Bay, but this covers all areas): https://fiscalgishub.cuyahogacounty.us/documents/fe3ccb349a1c4894958956e3149a068d/explore Also a reminder that 2024 is a sexennial appraisal year - if values hold it'll make for a substantial increase in valuations and collections.
  23. I think the big thing w/Cleveland Heights' (and to an extent Shaker) homes being cheaper are the high taxes. You'll pay back that cheaper home in taxes sooner than you think. Here's a tax rate table for Cuyahoga County: https://www.reveretitle.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Cuyahoga-county-2020-payable-2021-tax-rates-Revere-No-sales.pdf And from my group/for a deeper dive, scroll down to the Parcel Valuation and Tax Distribution map to see where those taxes are going: https://fiscalgishub.cuyahogacounty.us/pages/value-information-site
