I've been volunteering all week at the fest. There have been great crowds. Although they will not break last years record breaking attendance figures this year, it has done very well. Last year was above average temps and this year... well, lets not talk about last weekend. One of my favs was Ben X, and the shorts have been stupendous.

It ain't the weight on top so much as the lack of support from below that causes sinkholes (technically "subsidence", but I'm mincing words) like this. When a subterranean pipe breaks, the high-pressure water literally scours out an underground cavern while seeking a path of escape. Combine that with pre-existing utility access vaults and the like, and you go from "zero to crater" in a matter of seconds or minutes... I'm just very grateful no one was hurt. Thanks for the explanation. ditto - i feel smarter now

This puts a whole new perspective on movies with giant monsters like Cloverfield, or Godzilla. How come the streets in New York never buckle under the weight of those things?

The building will close in a few weeks. Then salvage will be done and asbestos abatement after that. Demo should start right after commencement in April There are tons of photos of it throughout this thread. Not exclusively student housing. It would be developed by a private developer and is supposed to have a market rate and affordable mix.
