  2. Can Cleveland Reinvent Its Historic Mall for Changing Times? VINCE GUERRIERI SEP 26, 2018 When Cleveland’s first-ever InCuya Music Festival was announced back in April, the lineup included a host of well-known artists including British rock band New Order, folk-rock band the Avett Brothers, singer-songwriter SZA, and Booker T. Jones—the last a nod to Cleveland being the home of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame. But the biggest star of the festival, held in late August, might have been the venue. “The location is what’s really going to make this special,” said Joe Litvag, a senior vice president for AEG Entertainment, the promotion company behind the festival, before its debut. Multiple locations were considered, including Edgewater Beach just west of downtown and Burke Lakefront Airport (unsurprisingly, the Federal Aviation Administration said no). In the end, more than 15,000 music fans gathered on the Mall downtown. Stages were set up at opposite ends of the green, one offering the Cleveland skyline as a backdrop, the other overlooking the lakefront. The response would appear to prove Litvag right. “The two grassy knolls in downtown Cleveland were designed for something like this—and honestly, should and probably will be used for other events, based on the reception,” wrote The Plain Dealer. 4. The Driftwood Group buys Otto Moser's Restaurant The Driftwood Group has purchased Otto Moser's on Euclid Avenue downtown and hopes to open a new restaurant in mid to late January, the company's founder Scott Kuhn said. Construction starts Monday, he said, and the new name will be Republic Food and Drink. The spacious restaurant will undergo a makeover that includes segregating the bar from the dining area and expanding the patio out front. "Republic is an America tavern pub-type restaurant that will specialize in sandwiches to prime rib to foods that people are really comfortable with," he said. With the opening, the 14-year-old Driftwood Group continues to establish itself in a primary area that the company embraces: Playhouse Square. In the district, the company also owns Bin 216, with a focus on small bites and wine, and the Italian restaurant Cibreo. 11. APA's 2018 Great Places in America: Cleveland Public Square Planning Excellence Public Square is the physical and historic center of Cleveland, but for decades it was crossed by two major roads, dividing it into four smaller squares. A recent redesign has remade it into a grand gathering space in the center of downtown. ublic Square was laid out in Cleveland’s original plan from 1796 by surveyors from the Connecticut Land Company. As part of Connecticut’s “Western Reserve,” the town was planned in the form of a traditional New England town. Public Square was the site of many historic events: President Lincoln lay in state there when his funeral train came to town, and the first electric street lights in the world were lit in 1879. Despite its history and central location, Public Square was not an appreciated space, serving primarily as a transit depot to connect from one streetcar line to another. Two roads crossing through Public Square resulted in a space designed for cars, not people. A central part of the space’s 2016 redesign was the closing of Ontario Avenue to traffic and the reduction of Superior Avenue from 77 feet wide to 48 feet. This redesign created two larger rectangular public spaces, promoting pedestrian use with new paving materials that create a distinct public space. The previous four quadrants of Public Square were merged into a single, cohesive public park with vehicle access restricted to buses, intended for use throughout the year with a range of programs and events. The new Public Square creates a space that is inviting and flexible, and landscape creates a soft colorful space that invites people in and encourages them to stay. The northern half includes a green sloped lawn. Well-suited for casual everyday use, this design also creates a natural amphitheater for events like movie nights and concerts. The southern half of Public Square is a hardscape plaza that includes a cafe and seating, a speaker’s terrace, the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, and a mirrored-fountain water feature. This same space is transformed into a skating rink in the winter months. MORE: https://planning.org/greatplaces/spaces/2018/publicsquare/ Other winners: https://planning.org/greatplaces/

  21. RTA gives six-figure payout to official it planned to fire in connection with health-care scam A trustee of the Regional Transit Authority accuses General Manager Joe Calabrese of failing to tell the board that he authorized a six-figure payout for an official that RTA investigators had accused of contributing to a scam that cost the agency hundreds of thousands of dollars. Board member Karen Moss complained in an email to board members that she was left to learn from a report last week by Cleveland Channel 8 News that Bruce Hampton Sr., former RTA human resources chief, will receive more than $125,000. "Basically, Joe and [the RTA legal department] settled with Bruce Hampton on July 25 and forgot to tell us," Moss scoffed in the email obtained by cleveland.com. "Isn't this exactly the type of issue we asked to know about? We specifically told Joe we did not want to hear about what was going on at RTA in the news." Hampton, who resigned in July after he was suspended without pay, will receive the payout in exchange for not suing the transit authority. https://www.cleveland.com/naymik/index.ssf/2018/08/rta_gives_six-figure_payout_to.html
