Very amusing: [youtube=425,350]YT1d2iZdGmY EDIT: I removed URL and added new fancy shmancy youtube tool
  2. This was nice to read. I agree. Besides, didn't the loss of the progressive tower have more to do with personality clashes between the White administration and Lewis as opposed to how "Cleveland passed up the opportunity."
  3. Trust me, if the tower is demolished, the new building will look nothing like those renderings. Remember, nothing will be torn down unless approved by the City Planning Commission and as it looks now, they will not approve it - but that could change. They toured the building this past week. On a different note: When I was in Philly last week for the APA conference I spent a few minutes looking at the "art" in the host hotel. I noticed one image that had six old black and white images of random buildings from across the country all quite old. After admiring this particular piece for a few moments, I thought, "hey, that one on the top looks awfully familiar." This is what I saw - what do you think?

I was pleasently surprised to see KJP there. The bridge off of I71was our second choice of viewing. From where we were for the first part of the morning, I would have no problem stating the spectator count was closer to the 5 - 10 thousand mark. We stood near the pedestrian over the creek right past the traffic circle and there were people everywhere. There has to be close to 1000 people just at he top of the hill close to where the tennis courts are (use to be?). This does not count the people who were hanging out by the football fields, on I71, on Pearl Road and those on the East side of the bridge in the Zoo parking lot. I need to upload the pictures of the crowds I took - if they turned out at all. From todays PD: Not sure who the photographer had to sleep with at ODOT to get these shots, but they are pretty cool. Swiped from Cleveland.com:
  5. What?!? Why?? I seriously thought they were making a lot of money off this. Most of the people I talked with were out-of-towners, tourists, and most of the concerts were full/sold-out. See here: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php?topic=7796.msg176178#msg176178
  6. One of my biggest problems I have with Cleveland.com is that they do not post the pictures from the articles in the paper.
  7. The things I have not done have been mainly due to my choice of where to spend my $ Sports is not one one of them. The only times I have gone to the Jake have been because tickets were given to me. Does the CMJ Fest count anymore since it has been discontinued? 1) The Old Arcade - 2) Westside Market - 3) Cleveland Musuem of Art - 4) Cleveland Musuem of Natural History - 5) Botanical Gardens - 6) Servance Hall for Cleveland Orchestra - 7) Playhouse Square (any of the playhouses) - 8)Cool Cleveland Metroparks Zoo - 9) Rock n' Roll HOF - 10) Great Lakes Science Center - 11) Cleveland Browns Stadium (preferbly home game) - 12) Quicken Loans Arena (preferably home game) - 13) Jacob's Field (preferably home game) - 14) International Women's Air & Space Museum (Thanks 30 Rock!) - 15) Little Italy - 16) Lakeview Cemetery - 17) President Garfield's Monument (best view of Cleveland IMO) - 18) Slavic Village - 19) Rockefeller Cultural Gardens - 20) Rockefeller Greenhouse - 21) Western Reserve Historical Society - 22) E. 4th nightlife - 23) W. 6th nightlife - 24) Cleveland Public Library downtown - 25) The Nautica Queen Cruise Ship (dinner or cruise) - 26) Edgewater Park - 27) Case ImPROV/play or West Bank comedy club - 28) Great Lakes Brewery - 29) Shaker Square - 30) Ohio City - 31) Tremont - 32) Goodtime III - 33) Steamship William G. So, this was a dud. I brought the kids. We waited. Around 8:30 there was a loud boom, but we didn't see anything. I was thinking maybe they were going to just do it in sections with the portion closest to Denison Avenue first. We did see a cloud of smoke a few moments later. The we waited again. We finally decided to leave when I saw the Channel 19 news helicopter leave. I figured they must have had the inside scoop about what was going on. They finally brought down another span - the one over CSX Rail Line - because they had to have it done in order for rail traffic to resume. The rest 0of the bridge will likely come down next week.

Found on Bill Calahan's Blog, ONE Ohio: Saturday, April 21, 2007 Cleveland posts RFP for wireless broadband network The City of Cleveland has just posted the Request for Proposals (http://www.city.cleveland.oh.us/business_center/RFP/Documents/WIFI.htm) for Mayor Jackson's planned citywide wireless broadband network. Excerpts from the RFP's "Objectives" section: The purpose of the RFP is to select a private-sector partner (a single Provider or group of partnering Providers) to own, fund, design, construct, operate, manage, maintain, repair and upgrade a wireless mesh broadband Internet network infrastructure. The wireless network will be used for the express purpose of increasing the broadband availability throughout the City to improve the quality of life for our citizens, businesses and visitors ... The City’s private-sector partner (s) would be expected to provide: • A dedicated and free wireless network for Internet access for the City’s safety and mobile workers to improve worker productivity. The wireless network will enable the City to use modern technology and applications to improve their productivity and deliver better government services more cost-efficiently and effectively. This means the network will be used for public and private purposes with appropriate separation and security for City use as required by the City. • Affordable, universal Citywide Internet access will be available to citizens, businesses and visitors. Cleveland’s wireless broadband network must reach every neighborhood, every populated area. The City is seeking a proposal that offers free to low-cost service options to every Clevelander and visitor. In addition, non-profit organizations should receive special pricing. http://oneohio.blogspot.com/2007/04/cleveland-posts-rfp-for-wireless.html
  15. First - I forgot to mention these are not 100% complete drawings. There will likely be some changes before the start of construction. I am not completely sure on the green 'buffer,' but I think it has to do with LEED points. Otherwise, the setback follows along the whole Euclid side of the campus. Think of the immediate context. Fenn Tower is right up to the sidewalk -> COE set back ~5' -> Mather Mansion set back many feet with pocket park -> Freeway. In this case, the set back is appropriate and contributes to the Euclid Ribbon portion of the master plan. There is a Euclid entrance. It did not show up well in the Site Plan. I went back to the book to check out and the results are below. First floor circulation plan Euclid Avenue elevation There will never be an expansion in the ear unless the Health Sciences building was to be removed. They (and other stakeholders on campus) were very outspoken about retaining and enhancing the green space between the two buildings. I think the 'corridor' thingy is an ADA ramp. Not sure. One more rendering showing the view coming from Fenn Tower.

I love that Chicago (developers) want to show the world that the U.S is not out when building bigger. I just do not like this design in the Chicago context. I agree with LittleItalyCleveland, it would look great in one of the Pacific Rim cities - it just does not fit here.

Good stuff. I think its been said before somewhere in the forum (at the very least, I have thought it hundreds of time and probably told people as many times), but by 2010 there is going to be so much freaking construction going on in the city. This. Innerbelt. West Shoreway. County Building. Flats. So on and so on
  21. ^I know everyone cares (except for those from other schools) :-D When I say the project has started, I am referring to staging. The fences are mostly up. There is need for placement and relocation of dumpsters. The trailers need to come in. Most of the really noisy, dirty stuff is going to wait until after the semester.
