Cleveland: Downtown: The Avenue District
I saw that in the newsletter too. I was thinking it would be an announcement of when the groundbreaking would be. (Unless, of course, they already announced it and I missed it.)

Here come Cleveland's "trolleys"
I just saw the 'trolley' for the first time this morning letting people (students?) off on East 22nd at CSU. I am very pleased with this. Another step in the right direction. I know there are other cities who have similar service - Portland for one. I can only hope this becomes so successful that RTA continues it year long instead of seasonal.

That's one way of looking at it. But there should be some nod to Mather in some way. You're right about Cole.

Cleveland: Cleveland State University: Development and News
MGD, I never thought about posting that here instead of mass mailing everybody at school. It won't happen again. I am not sure if agree with the architects statement about the southeast corner being the edge of campus. What about Mather? What about Cole Center (Continuing Education - across the freeway). Isn't that the eastern edge of campus? Regardless, it is a very attractive design. I think think Litt might even like it.

Faking Places
As funny as that truly was, what I read in the PD today about Walmart had me scratching my head a little bit. Apparently, they are moving toward more organic products. I take this two ways. They will do the consumer some good (never thought I would say that in context with Walmart) by lowering the prices of food products that are generally more expensive then processed foods. On they other hand, they will start knocking the specialty shops who serve these products out of business as they have done with many others in the past. Not sure how to take this

You've got a Meeting with Mike White
I would not want to ask him the hypothetical question what he would do if a virus put down his entire heard of Alpacas and he was asked by the (not any specific person) Mayor of Cleveland or County Commissioners to oversee an approach to any form of regionalism, specifically any possible merger with Cleveland and Cuyahoga County. Sheeesh... I would never want to ask him that again (hypothetically, of course ).

Non-Ohio: Road & Highway News
I agree. I hate when the house is acting as a function of the garage. It looks as if the whole design was for the auto. I had a fellow classmate refer to these house as "Snout Houses" (forgot to add) I love the fact they are recycling the old artery, though. Does anybody know what is being done with the rest of the freeway? Landfill? Recycled? Reef?

urban decay zine (cleveland)
And I thought I took bad pictures. I give her credit for trying. She is at least following through on something that interest her instead of reading Feagler and complaining. ...and she has good taste in music.

Cleveland: Valley View Hope VI Project
I didn't live or grow up there, but I was there often as a cab driver and it is still weird to see it gone. Thanks for the links to the pictures. Good stuff. I spoke with Walter at Tremont CDC about the art that used to be part of the original buildings. I was wondering what happened to them. There was a mural by a prominent African American Artist that contained the only known self portrait of himself, Plus the reliefs that were on the buildings as well as the little sculptures that were placed around the communal areas. He assured me that all of the artwork was saved, is in storage and may be used in the new construction. (UPDATE) I suppose I could have just looked up this information on the CMHA website (like I just did). They did have a couple of pictures on there of some of the work. Here are the pictures and blurb about the project (apologies if this was already posted in another thread)

Cleveland historic trolleys - staying or going?
At last Friday's Planning Commisionmeeting, an agenda itme was passed that will allow the owners of the trolley's to place the trains temporarily in the warehouse at Dock 32 for a period of 18 - 24 months, or until capital is raised that will allow the move of the collection to its permanent location at the end of the Waterfront Line near the Municipal Parking Lot. Jim Cox opposed the resolution. Here is the context of the meeting with the entire letter submitted by cox (cross posted from Cleveland vs. The World http://clevelandplanner.blogspot.com/) Ordinance #xxx1-o6 Legislation to be introduced to allow a lease agreement between the city and Lake Shore Electric Railway to store a trolley collection inside the Dock 32 Warehouse for 18 months (introduced on March 20th). They are currently working to raise funds for construction of a new storage and viewing at the end of the Waterfront near the Municipal Parking Lot. Mark R (from Marous Brothers – I forget his last name): The cars have to be off of the Olmstead Falls property by mid-June or the current owner ill lose the trains to the new owner. Jim Cox (Flats Industry Association, Executive Director): Submitted letter to the Commission Bob Brown: The lease was terminated by the City with an understanding that there would be no problems Mark: The trolley will remain inside… there should be room on the outside of the warehouse for emergency storage. There is a plan B that will utilize storage at a warehouse at Mitel Steel – not our first choice… would not be accessible to those who want to see the trains. Jim Cox: The Steel needs to be inside a warehouse, not outside.

Cleveland: Cleveland State University: Development and News
You want intriguing, Look at the Chester Building. It has evolved so much since first built in 1940 up until the latest morphing in the 80's. Next up is demolition of the back portion of the South Building in order to create a courtyard for the new Fenn Tower residents openspace as part of the greenspace plan. (I got this mixed up with the outdoor space that will be part of the new deli in Fenn)
