  1. Damn! Almost all of my Saturdays are booked.
  2. "And the most dramatic artwork, a metallic portal curtain that will take three days to hang over St. Clair Avenue, probably won't be installed until next week." Is this covering the parking decks? Or is this internal? I forget.
  3. That's the place. No, it wasn't at all. I guess I'm just wondering if there are plans for the corner.
  4. Just to be clear, Mazzone's is still there and I thought was still open. I was referring to the old import store across the street. I can't remember the name. I do recall going there many times when I was younger. I have a specific image in my mind of barrels of olives
  5. Drove past the Clark and Fulton intersection last night during the storm and what to my surprise did I see? Or, rather... what did I not see? The old Italian import store across the street from Mazzone & Sons Bakery. Completely demolished and removed. Did I miss a posting on this here?

And, after we hire the next coach, we will be paying three head coaches, right?
  7. World Gym to open at Severance Town Center; potential tenants looking at former Walmart The national gym franchise applied for signage permits at the former Red 24/7 Fitness location, according to Cleveland Heights Planning Director Richard Wong, who didn't know when Red closed. Red moved to Severance in February 2013, when it took over the former Bally Fitness' lease. Markowitz said there are some prospective tenants looking at the former Walmart space, but declined to comment further. http://www.cleveland.com/cleveland-heights/index.ssf/2014/05/world_gym_to_open_at_severance.html#incart_river_default
  8. Absolutely beautiful. I am now compelled to go explore and take pics again. Its been so long
  9. Slightly off topic: I am completely ignorant about this and was wondering about security. Couldn't anybody with a boat come from Canada or points east via the Saint Lawrence Seaway dock here (or anywhere in the Great Lakes and ... well, cause some sort of havoc? Always wondered about that.
  10. MetroHealth is taking unique approach as it plots campus overhaul CEO Boutros is forming a civic focus group of sorts By TIMOTHY MAGAW It was billed as an event where MetroHealth would unveil plans for a striking overhaul of its crumbling and outdated main campus off West 25th Street in Cleveland. However, the health system's boisterous CEO, Dr. Akram Boutros, last week didn't unveil a single blueprint or cost estimate for the massive facelift he expects will be almost complete by 2020. Instead, Boutros, who joined the health system less than a year ago, launched what could be characterized as a countywide focus group aimed at drumming up ideas to revitalize the taxpayer-supported hospital's dilapidated headquarters and its blighted surrounding neighborhood. The idea, Boutros said in an interview last week with Crain's, is to transform MetroHealth into “another jewel in the necklace that is Cleveland.” http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20140511/SUB1/305119977/metrohealth-is-taking-unique-approach-as-it-plots-campus-overhaul
  11. I'll wait until you have more content up to comment further. Otherwise, it looks great. Much improved.

^ I wouldn't get to bent up about it. Its been happening off and on for years. Although I have not witnessed what happened to you personally, I have had several threads which I created somehow over time have my name removed as the creator. Its all good though. If it really makes the other person happier, than so be it.
  13. I am surprised there is no thread for them already. MetroHealth unveils campus transformation plan at public meeting, executives vague on funding sources CLEVELAND, Ohio—During four days in early January, when the “polar vortex” drove temperatures in Northeast Ohio down to 10 below zero, MetroHealth Medical Center was nearly evacuated — twice — as the health system’s aging infrastructure buckled under the extreme cold. Pipes froze and burst, patient rooms flooded, toilets blew their tops and the hospital’s limping steam heat system nearly failed. MetroHealth CEO Dr. Akram Boutros knew from the day of his arrival in Cleveland last May that the county health system’s main campus on West 25th Street was badly in need of an overhaul. It wasn't until this winter, however, that it became clear just how dire the situation was. Boutros told the story to more than 500 people Friday morning at the health system’s Annual Stakeholder’s meeting, held for the first time at the Convention Center in a bid to involve more of the community in the public hospital’s internal planning process. “It was like Niagara Falls,” Boutros told the Plain Dealer in a meeting last week, describing how water fell from one floor to the next. “That brought home the urgency of this for us. We must begin replacing these buildings — they’re completely outdated.” In the end, 200 rooms were flooded, from intensive care units to maternity suites. The old research building, which houses about 80 employees, was evacuated. The staffing, repairs and cleanup cost $1 million. “That’s $250,000 a day we didn’t need to spend and that would have been better spent elsewhere,” Boutros said. And that may be best argument in favor of a campus transformation plan that will likely take more than five years and cost hundreds of millions of dollars: the alternative — doing nothing — would be even more expensive, and put patients at Cleveland's safety net hospital at an unacceptable level of risk. http://www.cleveland.com/healthfit/index.ssf/2014/05/metrohealth_unveils_campus_tra.html#incart_m-rpt-2
  14. This? Campus International School http://archinect.com/firms/project/106324/a-new-school-vision-for-cleveland-experiential-sustainable-design/20196919 WHOA!!!!! I am complete in favor of that.
  15. Eh... if Duck island can have a thread, so can this ************************************************* Spaces is close to signing a long-term lease in Ohio City's burgeoning arts district By Steven Litt A burgeoning cultural node in Ohio City on Cleveland’s near West Side could soon get a serious boost if the nonprofit art gallery Spaces can raise enough cash to move into the neighborhood. After months of quiet negotiations, Spaces is close to signing a lease with developer Michael Chesler, owner of the 14,000-square-foot brick industrial building at the southeast corner of West 29th Street and Detroit Avenue. Moving into the area, dubbed Hingetown by local developer Graham Veysey, would bring Spaces cheek by jowl with the new Transformer Station gallery, with Veysey’s Ohio City Firehouse and with the Striebinger Building, co-owned by Veysey and Marika Shiori-Clark. Also located nearby are ICA Art Conservation; the Van Roy Building, owned by Chesler; and the former Bop Stop jazz club, recently donated to University Circle’s Music Settlement. http://www.cleveland.com/arts/index.ssf/2014/04/spaces_closes_in_on_a_long_ter.html#incart_river_default
  16. Yes, the reuse of existing, less than desirable office space is a given. But to start out with that sort of a statement... I don't see it. Perhaps I'm reading it wrong though. I believe the demand is there for new office space, but the financing (and balls) are not. Anyway... I don't want to get off topic again. I hate getting in trouble (classic conflict avoider). My biggest design question though is in regards to the possible rooms facing the light well. It looks like those might have a great view of the Holiday Inn express windows, no? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  17. Just looked at Milenia's listings of properties in NEO. it appears most of them are focused on low to moderate income and senior living. so i guess that price point fits into what they do. Still... downtown!!!
  18. ^ I agree with that completely. Another 200-300 residents; plus 200 employees... awesome! This is a little disturbing to hear though: ""The downtown office market is dead," said Don Ankeny, Westcore's president and chief executive. "The resale market for empty office buildings in downtown Cleveland is more than dead."" Can't wait to see some pics of the bank interior (as I'm sure someone here will eventually post) Am I correct in saying this building as a whole also fronts Vincent? I wonder how far down does that light well go?
  19. Yes. They were power washing. Its actually the second time I've seen it happening there at night. The last time was last week and it was on the Euclid side

Tennessee Passes Mind-Boggling Ban on Bus Rapid Transit By Keith Barry Tennessee lawmakers overwhelmingly voted in favor a bill that bans the construction of bus rapid transit (BRT) anywhere in the state. The impetus for the vote was a proposal to build a $174 million BRT system in Nashville called The Amp, which would’ve ran on a 7.1 mile route and served rapidly growing neighborhoods across the city. There’s a more detailed summary of the project over at The Tennessean. Although BRT has been shown to revitalize economies and reduce congestion, opponents of The Amp voiced concerns about the safety of unloading bus passengers along roadways and whether private land would be used to build dedicated bus lanes. After the vote, Amp opponents revealed that the conservative group Americans for Prosperity, founded with the support of brothers Charles and David Koch, had lobbied in favor of the bus ban. http://www.wired.com/2014/04/tennessee-bans-bus-rapid-transit/

  22. PlayhouseSquare mourns the passing of Ray Shepardson PlayhouseSquare is heartbroken to learn of the death of founder Raymond K. “Ray” Shepardson on Monday, April 14, 2014. Our condolences go out to his family, friends and all those who knew him. Call it luck or call it fate, Ray Shepardson was undoubtedly in the right place at the right time when, as an employee of the Cleveland Board of Education, he was looking for a suitable meeting space for teachers and came across a series of abandoned theaters. With incredible foresight and vision, he believed that restoring and revitalizing those theaters would transform downtown Cleveland. His powers of persuasion convinced others that the theaters were an irreplaceable resource. Following a grueling seven-year run of presenting 200-300 performances each year before the theaters were fully restored, Shepardson went on to play starring roles in theater restoration projects in Columbus, Detroit and St. Louis, and has consulted on more than 35 major restoration projects all over the country. http://www.playhousesquare.org/news/detail/playhousesquare-mourns-the-passing-of-ray-shepardson
  23. Yeah, the sponsorship sucks, but it is a sign of our times (no pun intended). Regardless, every time I see a new pic of a part of the district in detail, or see an element driving by, I enter a state of awe. It is so nice to see such attention to detail where form is equal to or above function.... FINALLY!!!
