  5. 356th Fighter Group flies off into the sunset, will close Saturday The fight has gone out of the 356th Fighter Group. The Green restaurant with a World War II theme will close at the end of business on Saturday, owner Bob Scofield said Tuesday. Scofield, 55, said the past few years have been a struggle with the weak economy, particularly for independently owned restaurants. When times got tough, he had no corporate pockets to rely on, and he said he has been in bankruptcy for several years. Lately, his problems seemed to be mounting with electrical blackouts and broken pipes during the recent extreme cold weather, including a 6-inch line from his sprinkler system that caused 15,000 gallons of water to flood the restaurant early Thursday morning. “It’s been a great run for us, but lately, it’s just been one too many things,” he said. The restaurant, at 4919 Mount Pleasant Road NW, near the Akron-Canton Regional Airport, was opened in November 1986 by Specialty Restaurants Corp., of Anaheim, Calif., which operates theme restaurants throughout the United States. http://www.ohio.com/news/top-stories/356th-fighter-group-flies-off-into-the-sunset-will-close-saturday-1.459317
  6. GE Lighting will sponsor PlayhouseSquare's new outdoor chandelier, to be lit May 2 General Electric’s lighting division is betting its reputation that a gigantic, highly visible outdoor chandelier at PlayhouseSquare will keep shining no matter how nasty the wind and weather get. Cleveland’s theater district is announcing today that GE Lighting, the division of General Electric that is based at Nela Park in East Cleveland, is sponsoring the outdoor installation, which will be called the GE Chandelier. “We’re putting this thing of beauty out in the elements - everything that Cleveland has to throw at it, from the hot to cold to the windy,” said Tom Einhouse, vice president of real estate services for PlayhouseSquare. The theater district, which envisions the 20-foot-tall, 8,000-lb chandelier as a glittering outdoor centerpiece, released plans for the project and other improvements in April. http://www.cleveland.com/arts/index.ssf/2014/01/ge_lighting_will_sponsor_playh.html#incart_river_default

I recommend non-internet explorer users (which should pretty much be everyone here) to use Social Fixer. There are filters built in to do these very things. The one drawback being that FB code is always changing and thus, some - not all - Social Fixer tweeks break. Regardless, I love it. http://socialfixer.com/

Blue Angels Swoop Through Cleveland Today In preparation for Cleveland's 2014 Labor Day Air Show, two members of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels are stopping by Cleveland this afternoon. If you're near Burke Lakefront Airport around 4 p.m. today, look skyward, and you could see Blue Angels numbers seven and eight swoop through in their F/A-18 Hornet, before meeting up with air show officials and supporting organizations to hash out the details for this year's event. http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2014/01/08/blue-angels-swoop-through-cleveland-today
  11. How on earth is this thing going to open this summer as planned and the facade is not up yet? Have delays been announced? Sorry. I was reporting on what i saw while exploring on Friday, December 28. I guess some progress was made in the past seven days.
  12. Oh Laaaaaaawd! whoa...
  13. And that was with the crappy weather. Not bad.
  14. I've seen a lot of posts about how many people were at the event, both in the fenced-in area and the whole of Public Square. These numbers have ranged from 2,000 - 10,000. I have not, however, seen anything stating "official" numbers. Has anybody else seen anything out there?

Thanks for sharing, KJP. Thoughts and prayers to you and your family.
  16. For all of their bad reporting habits, I feel Scene has brought more local news to the forefront - particularly since the PD staff reduction. Cleveland Scene Sold! Your friendly local altweekly was put up for sale by Times-Shamrock, our previous owner, back in August, along with other papers in its portfolio. Since then, it's been business as usual around these parts except for that pesky "For Sale" sign sitting in our front yard. Today, that sign was taken down. Euclid Media Group, a newly formed company led by Scene publisher Chris Keating, San Antonio Current publisher Michael Wagner, and Clevelander Andrew Zelman, completed the purchase of Scene. It's all good news: Your paper is now locally owned, we're not going anywhere, and the ownership group is committed to building on Scene's strong tradition in Cleveland that dates back to 1970. http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2013/12/23/cleveland-scene-sold-were-not-going-anywhere
  17. Its smaller than you are asking (unless they do a combination indoor/outdoor), but Henn Mansion in Euclid would fit. Very Beautiful park setting right on the lake. And it would fit even my "pwt" budget. ;) http://www.hennmansion.org/ 9,200 sq. ft. brick English Tudor Manor Set on a 30-acre park and bird sanctuary on the scenic shores of Lake Erie 23 majestic rooms Leaded glass windows Carved oak panels Ornate fireplaces An elegant brass/wrought iron staircase Central Air Handicapped Accessible
  18. We may be going for a visit Saturday morning - can't wait to try it all out Jack Flaps!!!!! Oh my goodness. Incredible experience. As my fiancee eloquently put it, the Candied Jalapeño flapjacks will ruin all other pancakes for you for life. They are that amazing. I had the Crab Cake Benedict - super amazing. Huge Crab Cakes (made with very little filler, too). You mouth will thank you

  20. I cannot even understand the reasoning for having parking to begin with. Conventioneers are coming from out of town, right? Presumably via Hopkins where they may catch a train, or cab it up downtown. I know for fact of one other City who's convention center has no parking at all: San Fran's Moscone Center. They seem to function just fine. Perhaps this will spur one of the ground parking lot owners to step up and build something there instead.
  21. ^No doubt about the food served there - I've had some tasty dishes myself. It is definitely the location.
  22. I'm not sold on that particular parcel for any sort of food service. This will be the 4th or 5th operation in that place in the past 5 years. I wonder why nothing works out there. It has the advantage of free parking, too.

"Ardennes Forest cars, Belgium - These abandoned cars once belonged to American service men. After the war, they were responsible for shipping their vehicles back. Many of them couldn't afford to so the cars were brought to a clearing in the forest, parked and left there."
