  1. News from Oklahoma.... What most of us already know. "Why Cleveland rocks" BY Robert Reid When I told friends I was excited to be going to Cleveland recently – and not just because I got a ticket to the 27th Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Ceremony – they thought I was joking. After they saw I was earnest, they paused, then asked, ‘Why does Cleveland have the Rock Hall of Fame anyway?’ People tend to wonder that when they’re not making fun of Cleveland, the so-called "Mistake by the Lake," a smoke-choked town with underachiever sports teams and a river that caught fire in 1969. One recent poll of cities with negative connotations had three Ohio cities in the Top 10, Cleveland being the worst. Tina Fey even dared to compare the city to a sandwich in an episode of Thirty Rock a couple seasons ago. A sandwich! But thankfully good travel is perception blind. Once on the ground, it’s about finding places where you can merge with locals in believe in the places they live. Even in Cleveland, where I’d learn, floods with infectious, if cheeky, pride – evident in its 1970s "Cleveland: You Gotta Be Tough" T-shirts and the tongue-in-cheek ‘Hastily Made Cleveland Tourism Video’ that triumphed the city’s homeless. Locals may pause before talking about Cleveland, but once they start, they don’t stop. One refrain I heard over all town reinforces the built-up love: "People who move away are like rubber bands. They always move back." Read more: http://newsok.com/why-cleveland-rocks/article/3674573
  2. In no particular order: Ingenuity Festival Film Festival Larchmere Porchfest Cleveland Asian Festival (this weekend!!!) Circlefest But cannot forget about Hessler Street Fair, Studio-A-Rama, Brite Winter Fest, Clifton Arts and Music Fest, Burning River
  3. ^ Just to be clear. I said WHD was "quiet". And yes, everything else was D.E.A.D. But that was at 11:30 PM on a Monday night with nothing else (except the obvious) going on. I only brought it up because it felt particularly odd walking literally from a dead East 4th, around the corner, and smack dab into hundreds of people everywhere. It was just an anecdotal observation and not meant to imply the there was a sucking sound coming once again from Tower City
  4. Its all Cleveland Brown to me
  5. I say bring back the Hippodrome
  6. I can say with no doubt that one of the best rib eyes I've ever had was at Luxe
  7. Here's what it said below that rendering in the 1989 magazine where that rendering came from..... Someone should call that phone number I'm not really sure how to interpret those large crowds...will that take away from the other entertainment options downtown, or are the lines just long like this because it's the beginning of the casino opening. I hope it's the latter and everyone benefits but I am a little skeptical now Given that everyone out and about today has said how much car traffic there is, I don't think these are (just) downtown people diverting their typically daily dollars/lunches, these are people coming into downtown from elsewhere. I think it's just because the casino just opened, but will/should show those coming in that downtown is a fine place to come, and when they don't feel like standing in line for one of the 4 dining options, they will go elsewhere nearby. I hope your right because I believe MTS said that the Warehouse district and 4th street were dead last night, maybe it was a coincidence but it's just a waiting game now That was me
  8. Ferris Steak House moving to old Rockcliff, in Rocky River Plans to relocate Ferris Steak House are finally moving ahead. Co-owner Bruce Ferris is taking over O'Malley's Rockcliff, 2589 Wooster Road in Rocky River, to create a new home for the restaurant. First opened at 8700 Detroit Ave. in 1946, the steakhouse has been a West Side landmark for generations. In January 2010, Ferris announced his intention to move the business to a space formerly occupied by the defunct Swingo's on the Lake in The Carlyle on Lakewood's Gold Coast. Those plans unraveled and eventually were abandoned. "This one's a done deal," Ferris says. "We've already bought the property." http://www.cleveland.com/dining/index.ssf/2012/05/ferris_steak_house_moving_to_o.html Sucks for the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood. Short-sited vision by the Ferris family, IMO.
  9. I'll have to see this for myself! I saw it last night. Drove by there around 9:00 PM, and the line literally went from the back entrance on West Prospect, north toward Superior (with a few strategic breaks in the line), then went west along the State Office Building clear to Huron. Just a little shy of a half mile according to the car odometer. I came back down after 11:00 PM and the line was not only just as long, but it was clearly much more denser. I do have pictures. On a side note: PHS - dead; East 4th - dead; WHD - relatively quiet
  10. Sounds like a good reason to start a grassroots petition to do such a thing. Why wait for an elected official who should be thinking of this anyway to do it?
  11. ^Perhaps you would not have know, but I (and many, many others I'm sure) have been sneaking down there to explore since the 80s ;)
  12. Does my history knowledge serve me correctly in thinking the government initially did the same thing for providing fuel for combustion engines in their beginning?
  13. It was toward the start of the movie. They filmed near the Forest City Bank (Massimo's) portion of the subway. IIRC, it was where the " possessed bad guys" were setting up shop to start work on their bad guy project
  14. An additional note from my travels last night: the new video wall..... WHOA!! What an image from the innerbelt. If you have decent vision, everything can be clearly seen. What a site that was. If this is any indication of Dan's "Times Square" vision for this section of the city, it is a of to a great start. Very exciting.
  15. Press release: Lorain-Carnegie Bikeway Improvements to Begin Next Week City of Cleveland GARFIELD HEIGHTS (Monday, May 14, 2012) – On Monday, May 21, crews on behalf of the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) will begin a project to improve the Lorain-Carnegie (Hope Memorial) Bridge in the city of Cleveland. A collaboration between ODOT, city of Cleveland officials, Cuyahoga County officials and local cycling advocates, the $4.5 million project will make the bridge a safer, more family friendly and convenient option for cyclists and pedestrians wishing to travel across the Cuyahoga River valley. Crews will construct an improved, 14.5 foot multi-use path on the north side of the structure to capture views of downtown Cleveland. A concrete barrier will be constructed between the path and traffic, to enhance the experience for pedestrians and novice cyclists – and provide additional safety. Advanced cyclists will be advised to “share the road” with motorists in either direction using pavement markings called “sharrows” and signage along the route. In addition to the improvements noted above, crews will also install new pedestrian lighting and upgrade the existing street lighting. New lighting fixtures will be in keeping with the historic character of the bridge. Perhaps one of the most unique aspects of the project, crews will also install lighting to highlight the iconic “Guardians of Traffic” – the sandstone art deco pylons which stand watch over each end of the structure. In coordination with the Innerbelt Bridge project team, additional improvements will be made along the triangular “island” in the northwest corner of the Carnegie and Ontario intersection. Lanes in this area are being reconfigured and reclaimed space will be repurposed into a bike and pedestrian friendly promenade. Beginning on May 21, crews will implement temporary work zones from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day, to consist of a single lane closure of the westbound lane on the north side of the bridge. Beginning soon thereafter, crews will implement a permanent work zone where the westbound curb lane will be closed to traffic through the fall of 2012. During this time, only one lane of westbound (outbound) traffic will be permitted to cross the structure. Two lanes will be maintained in the eastbound (inbound) direction. Details will be forthcoming. Through the 2012 construction season, pedestrian traffic will be maintained via a pedestrian detour on the south side of the bridge. Bikeway improvements are scheduled to be complete during the fall/winter of 2012, with minor operations continuing into the spring of 2013. About ODOT: Ohio’s highways are essential to keeping and creating new jobs. With a mission to provide easy movement of people and goods from place to place, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is responsible for maintaining one of the largest transportation networks in the nation. Guided by ethical principles and accountability, ODOT works to improve safety, enhance travel and advance economic development. As a $2.8 billion enterprise, the department wisely invests in its core services of snow and ice removal, annual construction program and highway maintenance operations. ### http://www.dot.state.oh.us/districts/D12/Deputy%20Director/News/Pages/Lorain-Carnegie-Bikeway-Improvements-to-Begin-Next-Week.aspx
  16. Don't forget under the Detroit Superior Bridge 'subway."
  17. Drove by very late last night (this morning - hehehe). The SW quadrant of public square is completely blocked off and there are gates set up around the entirety of Tower City Center from West Prospect going north. The gates extend to the State Building as well on Superior. I guess if you are expecting 5,000+ people, you have to have a way to control their entrance. There was talk earlier of a special light show display on the northern face of the Higbee Building. I can confirm for fact this is true; however, nothing like the video that was posted up thread. They were indeed doing a dress rehearsal in those wee hours last night. The only thing I was not able to confirm was whether or not there would be fireworks going off on the roof (which I had heard some people talk about). And, of course, cops everywhere. Haven't decided if I will go up there tonight to take pics or not.
  18. There is concern with many of the buildings being lost sometime in the future due to he innerbelt construction (when ad if that phase - "The Trench" - ever gets off the ground. I believe somewhere in the innerbelt thread there is a graphic showing a number of the the warehouse being removed.
  19. What AWFUL "reporting." I do like the planters though.
  20. Many of the buildings formerly surrounding the square do indeed have some amazing architectural details. Too bad they are coated with the pollution of the time. Would love to see one of our young, bright forumers with p-shop skills work up how those building s might look today after being restored and cleaned of all the soot. (color optional)
  21. Has anybody seen anything regarding Monday nights "event?" If they are supposedly doing some big ribbon cutting with crazy projected light-show on the building, I sure cannot find any mention of it anywhere. You'd think they would be promoting it. Politicians? Lasers? Clowns? Fireworks? Anything?

  23. ^^You are correct on those times. Also, if you go right at opening on the weekdays (forget Saturday or Sunday), and anytime after nine. Having worked there (the Lakewood location) for a spell, I can tell you the wait times are only exaggerated because of a combination of inexperienced kitchen staff and main kitchen being half the size of a garage. When I worked there (the main grill) I can assure you the ticket times were RARELY, if ever, over a half hour. The time is added on people camping at the table, and just so many customers waiting to get in. It really does not take that long to make a grilled cheese... regardless of whether it is "gourmet" or not.
