Ohio Turnpike
Same this as the previous article - just a different accent ************************************************** Gov. John Kasich promises that most money from turnpike lease deal would be spent in northern Ohio Published: Tuesday, October 25, 2011, 5:50 PM By Reginald Fields, The Plain Dealer COLUMBUS, Ohio — Gov. John Kasich, sounding more determined than ever to turn over the Ohio Turnpike to the highest bidder, began Tuesday trying to ease the public tension about his privatization plan. The Republican governor said if he can pull off a deal to lease the 241-mile toll road, he would spend the better portion of the proceeds on infrastructure projects in northern Ohio and in communities along the turnpike. It was Kasich's way of trying to chip away at one of the sharpest criticisms of his plan by residents near the turnpike -- that the governor would unfairly siphon toll money they pay to fund projects as far away as Cincinnati and other far reaches of the state. What we already knew. ******************************************* In med marts competition, Nashville trails Cleveland Published: Tuesday, October 25, 2011, 8:05 PM Laura Johnston, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cuyahoga County's competitor in the race to build the nation's first medical mart has fallen behind. Market Center Management had planned to break ground this year on a Medical Trade Center in Nashville, Tenn. But the company must secure leases for at least 60 percent of its 1.5 million square feet to get private financing, and that hasn't happened yet. So the company is likely to push back its opening at least to 2014. "Although we have binding leases in place for space equal to half the entire Cleveland project, we will only break ground when we reach certain leasing levels," Market Center spokesman Cole Daugherty said Tuesday. "It's increasingly likely that a start date will happen next year, but we are fine with a longer runway if that helps ensure success." The Official *I Love Cleveland* Thread
Someone in Denver likes us Six in the city: Cleveland By The Denver Post Posted: 10/09/2011 01:00:00 AM MDT Published think pieces and on-the-ground reports of the urban renewal in the blighted Rust Belt are legion. High-profile reads on the imaginative youth of Detroit or the chic eateries of Pittsburgh have become as cliched and ubiquitous as gawking at Colorado's marijuana culture. Still, all the attention being showered upon the revitalization of these cities is merited at its core: They've got something to offer. Cleveland is no exception. The former home of Standard Oil as well as massive steel, coal and iron production, and shipping caught a hard break in the '60s and '70s but re-emerged in the 1990s with the success of the beloved hometown Cleveland Indians and the founding of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The 2010s shouldn't be discounted, either. ***************************** From here it just goes on to relatively (and subjectively) accurate details about a few of our jewels. ^I didn't see any of you there - we had free cookies, too. ******************************************************************* Solar panels installed to pick up part of Euclid library's power needs By John Funk, The Plain Dealer EUCLID, Ohio -- Euclid City Hall and the city library are getting an assist from the sun for electric lighting. Ohio Cooperative Solar, an employee-owned solar installation company, has completed massive solar panel arrays on the rooftop of each building. The nearly 700 solar panels will generate a maximum of 155,000 watts -- and over a year will contribute between 10 percent and 15 percent of the power needs of each building, said Cliff Wood, CEO of the cooperative. The city dedicated the projects Tuesday. The Euclid solar arrays are the largest the 2-year-old company has completed, said Wood. Anyone see the northern lights in the sky last night? That was pretty sweet. Coincidentally, while looking, I saw a very long shooting star in the southern sky. I've seen many in my life and this was probably the longest in length I ever saw in a single event. Good night to look up.

From The Telegraph: World power swings back to America By Ambrose Evans-Pritchard, International Business Editor 5:53PM BST 23 Oct 2011 The American phoenix is slowly rising again. Within five years or so, the US will be well on its way to self-sufficiency in fuel and energy. Manufacturing will have closed the labour gap with China in a clutch of key industries. The current account might even be in surplus. Assumptions that the Great Republic must inevitably spiral into economic and strategic decline - so like the chatter of the late 1980s, when Japan was in vogue - will seem wildly off the mark by then. Telegraph readers already know about the "shale gas revolution" that has turned America into the world’s number one producer of natural gas, ahead of Russia. Less known is that the technology of hydraulic fracturing - breaking rocks with jets of water - will also bring a quantum leap in shale oil supply, mostly from the Bakken fields in North Dakota, Eagle Ford in Texas, and other reserves across the Mid-West. "The US was the single largest contributor to global oil supply growth last year, with a net 395,000 barrels per day (b/d)," said Francisco Blanch from Bank of America, comparing the Dakota fields to a new North Sea. Total US shale output is "set to expand dramatically" as fresh sources come on stream, possibly reaching 5.5m b/d by mid-decade. This is a tenfold rise since 2009. "The implications of this shift are very large for geopolitics, energy security, historical military alliances and economic activity. As US reliance on the Middle East continues to drop, Europe is turning more dependent and will likely become more exposed to rent-seeking behaviour from oligopolistic players," said Mr Blanch. Meanwhile, the China-US seesaw is about to swing the other way. Offshoring is out, 're-inshoring' is the new fashion. That got me thinking, so I went to the Auditors site to check ownerships. There appears to be a fairly even distribution of individual ownerships (Clinic, Fairfax Redevelopment, City, County, State, Private/individual). But grouped together, the individual owners are way out numbered by the agencies.- Euclid News

From Crain's: Cuyahoga County creates panel to work with convention center/med mart developer By JAY MILLER Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald has announced the creation of a panel to work with the developer of the new Cleveland convention center and medical mart project. Mr. FitzGerald, in a telephone interview with Crain's, said the role of the group, which includes Mr. FitzGerald, Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson and other civic and medical leaders, will be to review the business and marketing plans of project manager MMPI Inc. and “to help develop reasonable performance benchmarks” for the MMPI sales and marketing staff. “It's formalizing (a) relationship that should exist” with the region's major medical institutions, Mr. FitzGerald said. He said he believes those institutions can use their clout to help attract tenants to the medical mart and conventions to the convention center. http://www.crainscleveland.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20111020/FREE/111029969 (edit: formatting)- Cleveland: Downtown Aquarium
Looks like they may have started on that process already... at least they say they have: "Design work and financing for the $40 million Phase 2 of the Greater Cleveland Aquarium has begun and includes a series of glass atriums along the Cuyahoga River with exhibits that educate visitors about “Rivers and Oceans of the World”. Phase 2 will also honor major events in Cleveland’s history which began in the Flats, including Moses Cleaveland’s landing, the birth of Industry in Cleveland, the start of the Environmental movement in the United States and Cleveland’s renaissance in the 1980’s." http://www.greaterclevelandaquarium.com/phase2.html - Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
