  1. Cleveland Makes List of Emerging Spring Break Destinations This is from a post made by Dougal in the Skyscraper City forum back on March 7th of this year. To me, this is a nice surprise! Who would have thought? The full article is on cleveland.com. Links are at the bottom of this post. Here are some snippets from the cleveland.com article: Note: These are emerging spring break destinations not to be confused with the top spring break destinations. ...Snip "There’s a new spring break destination in the mix, and it’s an unexpected one: Cleveland. The Northeast Ohio city ranks ninth on a list of emerging spring break destinations, as defined by year-over-year growth in Airbnb and Vrbo bookings for March 2023 compared to March 2022. Short-term rental bookings in Cleveland for this month are up 125% over a year ago, according to Key Data, which tracks metrics in the hospitality industry"...Snip ...Snip "Emily Lauer, vice president at Destination Cleveland, said there are lots of reasons families might be headed to town this month, including Disney’s Aladdin at Playhouse Square; men’s and women’s Mid-American Conference college basketball tournaments at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse; St. Patrick’s Day festivities; the Cleveland International Film Festival; plus the Great Lakes Science Center, Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and other year-round attractions"...Snip Links: Link to Dougal's post on the Skyscraper City Forum Cleveland.com article, 7 Mar 2023 Note: this is a subscriber only article, but you can get a 7 day pass via your Google, Facebook or Apple account.
  2. These lists that are usually provided by the main$tream media, are misleading in many ways. They usually show no love for Cleveland and can hurt Cleveland's reputation. IMHO, these M$M ranksters don't know jack about how Cleveland's transformation to a gem over the past decade.
  3. Almost time to jump the crane!
  4. We just need to add Cleveland to the list.
  5. Major changes coming for Tennis in the Land tournament in Cleveland ...Snip "Now, tournament director Kyle Ross said, organizers are consolidating the venue, putting the courts together and allowing non-paying public in for the fan fest. The changes will set the foundation for the tournament to embark on a new era, he said. “We liked what we did over the past few years, in terms of launching this event and giving it life and doing what we had to do through the pandemic, but it wasn’t the ideal tennis venue,” Ross said. “And I think that starts with having it all together. This way, people can walk from one court to the other, to food, back to a new match court. You can hear a roar from an adjacent court and can leave your seat and walk to it and see what’s going on. Previously, the tournament didn’t quite have that dynamic of proximity of having one consolidated venue.”...Snip More Here... 6. Great News for Columbus 🙂 Columbus named a Workforce Hub by White House
  7. Interesting reports from WKYC 3 news about why Cleveland is not getting any love from the big hi-tech corps: Cleveland Trailing Columbus Cleveland Trailing Columbus (Updated) The second link was updated later (9:35pm) than the first link (8:05pm).
  8. IMHO, Mistake on/by the Lake is mostly a Boomer thing, though, there are many Boomers who have done and are doing great things for Cleveland and surroundings. I believe many Boomers were exposed to the embarrassments of the 60's & 70's: burning river, Mayor Perk's hair catching on fire, city going into default, etc...All these incidents were frequently echoed as jokes on the late night shows such as the Tonight Show.
  9. Yes, it's a slow process, but I think with all the progress Cleveland/NEOH has made over the last decade, and an increasing number of positive stories from the media, things, IMHO, are looking up.
  10. Oh yes...I live in the middle of the snowbelt (Geauga County). I've often traveled from Hopkins to my home with a dusting at Hopkins to 6+ inches at my house.
  11. That's a good one!
  12. ColDayMan, I don't mean to sound whiny. I always keep track of the goings-on in NE Ohio in terms of business and new development and while I see a lot of wonderful things happening here, I look at rankings (I know many are somewhat bogus) and Cleveland is still at the bottom. Also, I'm concerned about things like RTA's dropping ridership over the past several years and the future of Hopkins Airport, a major component of NE Ohio's economic system. It's interesting that the "Rust Belt" is becoming a frequently referenced as a climate change refuge.
  13. I know of so many people who have dreaded moving to/visiting this area only to be, in a serious way, pleasantly surprised!
  14. Only problem about what other people think of the area is that some of them are decision makers for things such as locating major facilities and airline service.
  15. Interesting that other regions with bad winter weather (Minneapolis/St Paul, bitter cold; Toronto, cold w/plenty of snow; Boston, crippling blizzards; Seattle, chilly, gloomy, always raining, etc...) are successful. True, Cleveland has not only stabilized, but come a long way, but still has a long way to go.
  16. On a national basis, it seems to me Cleveland's (and by extension, all of NE Ohio) old Mistake-On-The-Lake narrative is still alive and well. To me, this is one of the reasons why outside businesses don't expand or relocate to NE Ohio. Also, I have seen successful businesses that started here, eventually are "Acquired" and relocate elsewhere, including Columbus. Does anyone else have this impression? Let's discuss.
  17. About GOJO being up for sale... Sold = Acquired and whenever a NE Ohio company is "Acquired" by a company outside the area, it's almost never good news. ☹️ Seems to me that Columbus & Cincinnati don't have this problem as much as does NE Ohio.
  18. Not in the immediate Cleveland area, but this is in nearby Avon... Linder Health, the emerging skin care brand, is moving its operations to Avon, Ohio Linder Health, a skin-care brand, is moving its operations hub from San Francisco, CA to Avon. More here...Warning, paywalled.
  19. A snippet from today's Crain's Snip..."The city of Cleveland is pulling back on economic development incentives and rethinking the ways it supports real estate and business projects. That shifting landscape — at a time of higher interest rates and labor shortages — is putting the real estate industry on edge. Developers and consultants say the city is reducing aid for projects at the wrong moment, when the central business district is still suffering from the pandemic and an uneven economy is slowing deals. During budget hearings in February, Tessa Jackson, the city's economic development director, told Cleveland City Council members that public spending on loans, grants and other incentives over the last decade-plus has not meaningfully impacted residents' lives. "When you look at historic poverty rates, historic unemployment rates, that money hasn't really moved the bar," she said during a public meeting. "You can't spend a half a billion dollars on economic development and not move the bar for anybody." Jackson is eliminating a popular loan program that supports private investments in vacant buildings and land. She's also rethinking the city's approach to tax-increment financing, a powerful tool that captures new property-tax revenues generated by development and uses them to pay off project debt. Snip... Cleveland's economic development department pulls back on incentives Moderators, if this post is in the wrong thread, please move it to a more appropriate thread. Thanks!
  20. Hopefully, I-71 goes three lanes all the way from Cleveland to Cincinnati. I-95, in South Carolina needs a complete widening, from the NC border to the GA border, to three lanes. I travel from Cleveland to Hilton Head, SC a few times a year and 95 is always a mess...let alone it has more potholes than you would ever see in Cleveland during the winter. Don't want to see I-71 to end up like this...During the Summer, this is normal. There doesn't have to be an accident or bad weather.
  21. Ohio Senate votes to redefine ‘green energy’ to include fossil fuels and drilling in state parks House Bill 507 was originally called “the chicken bill,” aimed at regulating the number of poultry chicks that can be sold in lots. But this week, during a frenzy of lame-duck legislating, Republicans in the Ohio Senate amended the bill to change a scientific definition and approve oil and gas drilling in state parks for basically anyone who applies... Full article is here.
  22. Anyone have any thoughts as to whether or not the Library Lofts will need a tower crane?
  23. ...Just another clueless publication that really doesn't get many facts, but instead, continues to push the Mistake on the Lake mantra. 🙄
  24. Hey thanks Enginerd! I was just curious.
