DeKalb, Illinois (name of city and county) Known at the "Barb City" or the "Communiversity" Closely connected with it's sister city, Sycamore (the county seat) Part of the Chicago metropolitan statistic area (downtown Chi-town is 60 miles due east) 2005 Population: 42,085, county: 97,665 2000 Population: 39,018, county: 88,969 2005 DeKalb/Sycamore area: approx. 56,000 Home to Northern Illinois University Birthplace of barbed wire (thus the city's nickname) Famous for DeKalb seeds Birthplace of Cindy Crawford (1984 DeKalb High School valedictorian) Famous NIU alumni/students: Joan Allen, Dan Castellaneta (voice of Homer Simpson), Dennis Hastert (outgoing Speaker of the House) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It was a sunny Sunday afternoon so I decided to take a walk; I took these photos a little more than a month ago (around Halloween........so the Egyptian Theatre is all decked out for it's Amenti Haunted House). Also, it was nearing dusk, so I apologize for the shadows and whatnot. DeKalb's downtown is kinda gritty, with primarily 2, 3, and 4 story buildings. There is a push to try to turn downtown DeKalb into something like downtown Naperville ( http://www.naperville.net/downtown/index.html ), only on a smaller scale. Furthermore, DeKalb/Sycamore and DeKalb County is becoming more suburban (due to the outward expansion of Chicagoland); new subdivisions and shopping centers are popping up basically out in the middle of nowhere. The county and city governments have taken action and permits controlled growth.......although a lot of the growth is very sprawl-ish. All in all, not a bad town.........Rockford and Aurora are both very close and Chicago is not much further beyond Aurora. NIU DeKalb seeds ---------Around campus------------ -----------Heading toward downtown------------------ The mighty Kishwaukee  DeKalb's Main Street.......Lincoln Highway (US 30 is now rerouted about 10 miles south of town) Another theatre........but it's now a Mexican restaurant One of DeKalb's busiest intersections [Lincoln Hwy (IL-38) and 4th Street (IL-23)] is diagonally bisected by two sets of heavily-used railroad tracks) Oh, lord........... -----------Walking back to campus----------------- Local landmark: Another view of the Kishwaukee River: Gritty campus area of Lincoln Hwy 1 of 5 Starbucks in DeKalb: ------------das Ende----------------

Not only Big Lots, but Dollar General, Wal-Mart, and Goodwill! Boo-yah! :-D
  8. That movie is a classic. My dad literally keeps the television on TBS all day Christmas Day so we won't miss a minute of the "A Christmas Story" marathon :D. And, by the way, who doesn't love that leg lamp?! :)

He's from Norwalk. It makes Kentucky look like Barcelona. Wow. I had no idea that Norwalk's profound elegance could boost so many cities/states up to the Maple City's superior level. :-D

  14. Hey...............nothing like bringing a nearly year-old topic back from the dead!!! I took that survey about my linguistic profile and here's the results: 75% General American English 10% Upper Midwestern 5% Dixie 5% Midwestern 0% Yankee One more thing.....................I've come to find out that it seems like I am the only person in Chicagoland that pronounces "gyro" like j-eye-ro. Everyone laughs at me when I say it that way :) Most people here pronounce it "geer-uh". How do y'all say it?

Funny that you say that. My favorite radio station is out of Mansfield and every commercial break you'll hear advertisements for a car dealer, furniture store, etc. They always use the Richland Mall as the focal point. It seems that the only thing the city of Shelby has going for it, is that it is 10 minutes north of Richland Mall LOL :)
  17. A few of the main streets in Bellevue recently switched to two-way from one-way about a year or so ago. The results have been good, especially since the traffic in downtown Bellevue is often congested. US 20 and a few state routes with heavy semi-truck traffic, combined with a strange layout of streets and the railroad, really bottlenecks that town. I have noticed on the few occasions I drive through Bellevue that traffic is not backed up as much as in the past. Downtown Bellevue, by the way, isn't in the greatest shape.

Sweet! Way to go, Firelands! Erie County: 67% Strickland 64% Brown *Erie County also voted for Marcy Kaptur (D-Toledo) at 70%. And we still have Chris Redfern (D-Catawba Island) as our State House representative. Huron County: 57% Strickland 54% Brown *Also note Huron County's State House (58th) will be served by Matt Barrett (D-Amherst) and State Senate (13th) will be served by Sue Morano (D-Lorain). Both of these districts were represented by republicans for a long time. Although Paul Gillmor (R-Old Fort) is still the 5th US House representative.
