Not very urban, but since I'm away from home I get kind of homesick every now and then; so, my desktop is my back yard :-D

Cleveland Barons Discussion
I think if Clevelanders wanted to follow the Blue Jackets, it'd be pretty tough to catch a broadcast. I was on the CBJ's web site and found their radio affiliates nearest Cleveland. There are AM stations in Youngstown, Warren, Massillon, Elyria, and Mansfield; and an FM station from Norwalk. And I highly doubt any of those stations (with the exception of WEOL in Elyria) could be heard in Cuyahoga County!

The Haunted Factory
Yeah 1796 is extremely early; I will have to make a closer inspection in May when I'm done with school. The date may be on the panel opposite the one I took pictures of. Ooh.....and a thought just popped into my head (uh-oh :-o ).........there is an old carport-type structure that has old farm equipment just sitting there about a mile or less from this grain drill. I am gonna check that out, come May, as well. :)

Rail Safety Thread
I remember a few years back when there was a crossbuck sign at the Halfway Road W&LE Railroad crossing between Norwalk and Monroeville. The township decided to put up STOP signs there as well. I really thought that was a good idea! Well, I guess it didn't matter; not long after the signs were put up, the state supplied the money to put up gates, flashing lights, and bells. But I am all for STOP signs at crossings without automatic devices. :-)

And that awful looking electrical transformer / power station place is very unappealing too.

The Haunted Factory
All this talk about old machinery got me excited! I took a lot of photos of the river valley area I live in last autumn; there is this very secluded area just to the south of my parents' property along the West Branch Huron River and my sister and I once found this old till machine in the woods. So on this hot October day, I decided to take a walk and add some pictures of this piece of equipment to my collection. And don't worry, this is relavant to Springfield, Ohio! First off, here is the area of where I took these pics (just to show how secluded and kind of creepy it is): This area used to be known as Myers Mills, because Adam Myers (born in 1755, fought in the American Revolutionary War) owned this property and ran a ghrist mill (of which no physical traces exist today). It is somewhat hard to tell, but this could have possibly been the old canal that drew water from the river and powered the mill: This is a tributary of the river that runs near the southwest edge of the property: The piece of old machinery sits (just out of view) on the right of this photo, near old County Line Road, which is nothing more than a grassy overgrown trail through the woods: The old till machine: Up close: It's tough to make out the words, but it reads: Force Feed / Grain and / Fertilizer / Drill / with / Variable Speed / D. 1796 (the date it was made) More writing: Fertilizer / Grain Drill / Manufactured By / The / Oliver Farm / Equipment / Company / Springfield / Ohio USA I love local history and finding old things like this till machine. I searched on the 'net for the Oliver Farm Equipment Company (no longer in existence, I assume) and couldn't find any info on it. But nonetheless, I still appreciate the fact that this pioneer-era piece of equipment sits practically in my back yard!

Rustbelt Reverie
if you mean the richardson-romanesque building with the clock, that isn't the courthouse. it's the old city hall, which was moved to some 70's disaster... Hmmm....well regardless, the building with the clock is a nice structure :)

Ohio High School Football: General News & Discussion
My alma mater has made it to the Division 6 State Title games in 1997, 1999, and 2004 (and they were unfortunately State Runner-ups each year). I went to the 1999 game in Canton and the 2004 game was in Massillon; very fun atmosphere! I cannot see High School football being played anywhere else other than Stark County! It's tradition.

How depressing! But the courthouse is beautiful IMO!

Ohio Non-Commercial Airports
If they built an airport at NASA, then all those scientists can just fly into Sandusky and walk right across the street to the indoor waterparks! :-D

I STILL absolutely HATE WUAB!!!
Yeah that station kinda sucks. I was watching Veronica Mars once and then all of a sudden 19News cut in with a breaking news story (and that story wasn't even worth mentioning on any other station during their regular newscasts)! And then you have the severe weather cut-ins (I'm a meteorology major and I LOVE the weather) but enough is enough.......I think people are smart enough to get indoors during a severe thunderstorm........we don't need 3 forecasters and a whole news team to tell us that :-D

Toledo: Westfield Franklin Park
Actually Westfield Shoppingtown Franklin Park is the official name. Westfield is the company that owns the mall and other Ohio malls such as Westfield Shoppingtown Richland (in Mansfield) and Westfield Shoppingtown Great Northern (in North Olmsted).

Ohio - a divided state? North vs. South?
Speaking of accents; my mother is from Marion, Indiana (if you draw a line, it is directly across from or parallel to Celina/Kenton/Marion/Dover/etc. here in Ohio. I can definitely tell that my aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandma in Indiana have a different (more southern-sounding) accent than I do (me being born and raised in north central Ohio). My mom says she can't tell the difference (but that's probably because she is from there). Anyhow, I'm a big fan of regional words and phrases. While at my grandma's house a couple of years ago, she asked if I wanted a mango cut up in my salad. I was very puzzled and didn't know how to answer (because I like mangoes--the fruit, that is--but I didn't want one in my salad)! So I asked her, and she showed me what a "mango" was............it was a green pepper! I'm assuming that mango must be the Indiana word for green pepper! Does anybody else call it a mango????

Songs about States, Cities, Places, etc.
Here's a song for all of you punk/emo fans (myself included): "Ohio is for Lovers" by Hawthorne Heights (this band is from the Dayton area) Hey there, I know it's hard to feel like I don't care at all. Where you are and how you feel. With these lights off as these wheels keep rolling on and on. (and on and on and on...) Slow things down or speed them up. Not enough or way too much. (and on and on and on...) How are you when I'm gone? [Chorus:] And I can't make it on my own. (And I can't make it on my own.) Because my heart is in Ohio. So cut my wrists and black my eyes. (Cut my wrists and black my eyes) So I can fall asleep tonight, or die. Because you kill me. You know you do, you kill me well. You like it too, and I can tell. You never stop until my final breath is gone. Spare me just three last words. "I love you" is all she heard. I'll wait for you, but I can't wait forever. [x2] [Chorus:] And I can't make it on my own. You know you do, you kill me well. You like it too, and I can tell. You never stop until my final breath is gone. (YOU...KILL...ME...WELL) So cut my wrists and black my eyes. My final breath is gone So I can fall asleep tonight [Chorus:] And I can't make it on my own. (YOU...KILL...ME...WELL) You know you do, you kill me well. You like it too, and I can tell. You never stop until my final breath is gone. [to fade]

This seen in the 'Nati
Speaking of which, I saw someone with a t-shirt for a John Mellencamp (I think it was him) tour, and the shirt had all of the dates and locations for the concerts. Cincinnati was spelled Cincinatti!

Natural gas drilling and logging in state parks
Well of course, let's just destroy the environment; future generations don't need it :sarcasm:
