Rockford, IL
Lots of great things happening in central Rockford....but still a long way to go. Unfortunately Rockford usually has a negative reputation throughout the state of Illinois, and it is definitely an underrated city. There are plenty of issues....high unemployment, crime, etc.....but the cultural amenities, public parks/gardens, and aerospace/hightech businesses are just some of the bright spots that far outweigh the negative. This former hardware store on the main drag---State Street---is currently under renovation and is expected to house residents and ground floor retail by next Summer....with the demand for downtown living strongly rising. Check out the renovator's profile: http://urbanep.com/developments/ Other exciting downtown projects: Downtown/Riverfront indoor sports complex (re-use of abandoned industrial buildings) http://downtownsportscomplex.org/ South Main corridor redevelopment (and return of Amtrak service to Chicago & Iowa) http://www.rockfordil.gov/community-economic-development/long-range-planning/corridor-plans/south-main-revitalization-strategy.aspx Downtown/River Casino (still in preliminary stages) http://www.rockfordcasinocoalition.com/ And of course our successful and nationally recognized late Spring / Summer / early Fall 'City Market' http://www.rockfordcitymarket.com/ Thanks for posting these photos, Summit! Hopefully I can find the time to get some photos of some of our great neighborhoods on here.

What do you define the Midwest to be?
I grew up in the Great Lakes region. Rarely (but occasionally) would you hear the term Midwest used. It is what it is....

What Cincinnati's Fountain Square Could Be
It could be a giant chocolate fountain. That'd be fun!

Ohio Sundown Towns
Agreed. Interestingly enough, I remember seeing a lesbian couple holding hands walking down one of the busier streets in little ol' Norwalk. They weren't hassled at all. I noticed them on my way home from high school, (and as someone still semi-in-the-closet at that point in my life.....it was very refreshing to see). This was about ten years ago; and I've noticed that as homosexuality has become more plevalent/ mainstream today, especially in Generation Y (X, too), people are much more open in areas where you wouldn't think. I've publicly held hands with another guy in downtown Sandusky without any problems. Of course, there are still many instances of gay-bashing, but it's very nice to see that opinions are changing! :)

Ohio's Small & Rural Transit Systems News & Discussion
Bus service expands throughout Erie County ANDY OURIEL - SANDUSKY - JAN 7, 2013 http://www.sanduskyregister.com/article/3043516 For less than $3, anyone can board a Sandusky Transit vehicle and zip to any destination in Erie County and as far east as Ohio 58 in Lorain. The one-way trip on the transit’s Demand Response offering includes curbside pickup, allowing people to call in and request a ride. A ride to and from any place in Sandusky is still $2. --------------------------------------------------------------- This is great news for the entire county! But dear God, some of those comments from the local anti-government crowd are disheartening!

New night time satellite images.
I wonder what that large blob of light in western North Dakota and/or eastern Montana is? It's as big as Chicago....

Ohio Congressional Redistricting / Gerrymandering
And not too far to your west----Elyria & Norwalk are represented by some guy from the Dayton area. My mother was not too happy when they sliced Erie County in half (for that snake-y liberal lakeside district LOL) and she was moved out of Kaptur's district and into Jim Jordan's. Doesn't make much sense to me.

Sandusky-Erie Islands: Random Development and News
Amphitheater to open this weekend at Paper District Marina Organizers hope Saturday’s highly anticipated debut of an entertainment venue in downtown Sandusky will spawn several encores. ANDY OURIEL SANDUSKY OCT 5, 2012 The long-awaited amphitheater at the city’s Paper District Marina, on Shoreline Drive next to the Chesapeake Lofts, opens for its first show at the inaugural Docktoberfest. http://www.sanduskyregister.com/article/2616021 Baby steps for downtown....but this is great news! Request: Great Blue Lake Erie
Here's a few photos from a couple of summers ago. They were taken near Huron & Vermilion in Erie County (near the transition of the shallower western basin to the deeper, bluer central basin of the lake). Not for commercial use, but use these photos all you want! 8-) Main Street Beach, Vermilion Sheldon's Marsh State Nature Preserve, between Sandusky & Huron (on the horizon in the center of the photo is a faint view of Cedar Point)

The YouTube Thread
Kind of makes me sad....they took down one of my hometown's 'skyscrapers' last week. Here's the demolition of 'Space Spiral' at Cedar Point. The best view is at 0:35 seconds.

Ohio's Small & Rural Transit Systems News & Discussion
SPARC rolling forward Andy Ouriel 2:47 PM - January 16, 2012 http://www.sanduskyregister.com/sandusky/news/2012/jan/16/sparc-rolling-forward SANDUSKY - Sandusky’s public transportation system statistically provided two rides for every Erie County resident in 2011. Almost 146,000 people rode public transportation vehicles in 2011, according to Sandusky Transit System passenger data. The amount represents a 42 percent gain in ridership compared to the 103,000 riders in 2010. The 2011 numbers reflect a huge gain from 87,000 riders in 2008. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Old thread, I know. But considering the frequency of this topic, I think it'd be silly to start a new thread.
