Summer Olympics 2016
Watching the opening ceremonies of the Winter Olympics got me to thinking what US cities should put in bids for the next Summer Games. Chicago is definitely on my list (I've also read on the internet that San Diego/Tijuana and Dallas are possible candidates). I really couldn't see an Ohio city winning the bid, but I would never discount the three C's as good candidates. Personally I am biased and would choose Cleveland. So what are the thoughts of my fellow UrbanOhioans? On a lighter note, I stumbled across this article :-D : USOC Surprisingly Awards 2012 Olympic Bid to Sandusky, Ohio Sandusky, Ohio was surprisingly awarded the U.S. nomination for the 2012 Olympics by the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) on Saturday, beating out New York and San Francisco. Many feel the USOC selected Sandusky as a sacrificial lamb, not wanting to waste the bids of New York or San Francisco when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is said to be looking for a host city in Africa or South America for the 2012 Games. The industrial town of 30,000 on the shores of Lake Erie was not known to be a finalist before Saturday. When USOC President Milt Runyan made the announcement, gasps filled the room, followed by pronouncements of shock and disbelief by the New York and San Francisco bid teams. Representatives from Sandusky were not at the event, as no one from the town was aware it was a candidate... http://www.sportspickle.com/features/volume1/11062002-usoc.html

Don't you know? The reason we are going to Mars is to colonize it, dig some wells, and build oil refineries! LOL

Hollywood name drops Cincinnati
I guess indie film writers and directors like Sandusky for some reason: Edge of Seventen (filmed in 1998); movie about a gay teenager growing up in the 80's in small-town Sandusky Gypsy 83 (filmed in 2001); starring Sara Rue, about two goth misfit friends "escaping" from Sandusky to New York City where opportunities abound and people are more open-minded the director of these two movies, Todd Stevens, was from Sandusky ------------------------------------- Close Encounters of the Fourth Kind: Infestation from Mars (filmed in 2004) this movie was filmed entirely in Sandusky and Cedar Point (the first time Cedar Point has ever allowed a movie production at their park); local residents were included in many of the scenes.........looks like a fun movie.......I gotta see it sometime!

Miscellaneous Ohio Political News
I have it on my current license, but I think I'll take the SSN off when I renew my license. I'm turning 21 at the end of this month, but I am out-of-state, and the next time I'll be in the Buckeye State is middle March; so it looks like I'd better be a law-abiding driver and get no tickets until then :-D (not that I'd be a bad driver without an expired license )

Hollywood name drops Cincinnati
Ohio is the setting for a lot of stuff. The Drew Carey show (Cleveland, obviously) 3rd Rock from the Sun (Rutherford, Ohio....imaginary city near Cincinnati I believe) Hope and Faith (Glen Falls, Ohio......imaginary Cleveland suburb) Extreme Home Makeover (had an episode in Boardman, a Youngstown suburb) Three Wishes (NBC show that got cancelled this year, had an episode that helped people throughout Tuscarawas County) And some movies like Tommy Boy (with Chris Farley, was set in Sandusky) Silence of the Lambs (supposedly set in Bellevue) I know there are a lot more, but these few are off the top of my head

Columbus: Huntington Park (Clippers ballpark)
Well at least they aren't building the ballpark in the suburbs!!! This gives people another reason to patronize downtown Cbus. By the way, are the Clippers any good?

Winter's Back in Ohio!
So how much snow did you guys get? Here in north central Illinois we got a dusting, and it's all melted already! :-( But there is hope..........this weekend the high is supposed by right around 20, lows in the single digits, and a chance for snow! :-D

So are any of you Geographers attending AAG (Chicago)?
That would be very interesting to attend. But unfortunately the dates conflict with my academic schedule :( March 7 through March 11 (the dates of the AAG conference) is the week before Spring Break, thus I will be having exams in 4 of my 5 classes. Otherwise, I would probably check it out!

Cincy - Lower Price Hill & near
Whoa. Those photos were so depressing (adding to it nicely was the rain/snow). But I like those pictures very much; they were beautiful in their own sort of way. Nicely done :-)

East or West Side of Cleveland
I am obviously biased as I lived about 55 miles WEST of downtown Cleveland (and about 15 miles west of the metro) my whole life..........so Cleveland to me is downtown AND Elyria, Westlake, North Olmsted, the Airport, and environs. I have been to the east side on two occasions.........Geauga Lake (if even count that as the East Side) and Rock Creek (Ashtabula County, not a Cleveland suburb at all). But my perspective of Cleveland is the west side!

columbus affirms smoke ban
I'm kind of neutral on smoking bans. I don't smoke, so I would love to breathe fresh air in every restaurant. On the other hand, who am I to tell people what to do??? Tough situations, these smoking bans.

Winter's Back in Ohio!
I'm so mad.......I'm a meteorology major and so I'm into all things weather. I especially love winter storms, which most of Ohio is going to experience the next day or so. Not me though, I'm in cold, windy, snow-less Illinois :x http://www.erh.noaa.gov/cle/ pink=winter storm tan=winter weather advisory

Modern Roundabouts in Ohio
Downtown Lagrange has a roundabout (I think the traffic sign there says "Rotary") where 303 and 301 intersect. Also Litchfield has one (Litchfield is on the way to Medina on Route 18, at the 83 intersection, this isn't usually found on a map).

Petersburg, KY: Creation Museum: Development and News
I have relatives in Eaton (north of Cincy, west of Dayton) and relatives in Grosbeck (not sure how to spell it) and I have been to the Tri-State Dragway in Hamilton a couple of times, so I generally know what it's like. Not that I'm an expert, and I probably shouldn't generalize, but I perceive the Cincinnati area as conservative.
-
Petersburg, KY: Creation Museum: Development and News
Right.....but come on.......this is SW Ohio/N Kentucky we're talking about..........it's quite obvious of the conservative flavor they have going on down there
-
Petersburg, KY: Creation Museum: Development and News
Why? I am sure it was tongue-in-cheek about Cincinnati's conservative reputation. tcjoe1985, here is why... next time, check the Q&A: 5. Why did you choose the Cincinnati area? About 2/3 of Americas population can drive to Cincinnati in one day! In addition to those 170 million Americans, millions of Canadians in the provinces of Ontario and Quebec can also drive here in one day. Most convenient, the museum will be close to I-75, the busiest north/south interstate in America. http://www.answersingenesis.org/museum/faq.asp No need to get all mad...........I didn't even make the statement about the conservativeness of the Cincinnati area. I just said that I was not surprised it is being built in the Cincinnati area; and besides I'm not against religion and I don't think that since the Cincinnati area is more conservative it is more religious (although the two go hand in hand sometimes). Heck......it'll probably be a nice addition that draws people from all over (although I would personally probably never go to it).

Ohio Education / School Funding Discussion
Heck I went to a Catholic High School and Intelligent Design was not talked about in the science classes. It was taught, however, in the religion classes; and that is where is should be taught, because it is religiously based.
