How Do You Explain Ohio To People?
While I was in Italy with my family a few summers ago, I distinctly remember this one conversation we had with a guy in a pizza place (I know, it's pretty stereotypical :-D). He asked what state we were from and when we said Ohio, he asked "Is that by 'na chersey' (new jersey)?" :-) And when I mention to other people from the United States (including Ohio) that I am from Norwalk, Ohio, they always ask "where is that?" I'm used to saying "by Cedar Point Amusement Park" or "in between Cleveland and Toledo" and that usually helps. But one time when I told someone that I was from Norwalk, Ohio, they said "oh yeah, by that big raceway" I about had a heart attack!!! And I was in either 'tucky or Pennsylvania (I can't remember)!!!! Oh yeah (more randonmness)! While on a class trip to New York City, a few of us were talking to an older couple from Oregon state, and they were amazed that it took us about 8 hours to get from our town in Ohio to NYC; they thought it was only about a 4 hour drive!

Origins of city names in Ohio
Towns in the Firelands region (including all of Erie County and Huron County, and small portions of Ashland County and Ottawa County) get their names primarily from Connecticut, where their towns were burned during the Revolutionary War (Norwalk, New London, Greenwich, New Haven, North Fairfield, Plymouth, Groton, Ridgefield, Danbury etc.). Some places are also named after other English-sounding places (Oxford, Richmond, Berlin, Norwich) as well as the people who owned the land (Perkins, Margaretta, Sherman). Towns and villages in this area often have many resemblences of New England. I'm a local history dork, so I'm going to give you all of the names of the townships in the Firelands! Ashland County Ruggles Twp Erie County Margaretta Twp Perkins Twp Huron Twp Vermilion Twp Florence Twp Berlin Twp Milan Twp Oxford Twp Groton Twp Huron County Lyme Twp Ridgefield Twp Norwalk Twp Townsend Twp Wakeman Twp Clarksfield Twp Hartland Twp Bronson Twp Peru Twp Sherman Twp Norwich Twp Greenfield Twp Fairfield Twp Fitchville Twp New London Twp Greenwich Twp Ripley Twp New Haven Twp Richmond Twp Ottawa County Danbury Twp

Ohio Bed & Breakfasts
www.georgianmanorinn.com This place always gets great reviews. www.themilanhouse.com This place is about an 1/8 mile from my parent's house. There is a long driveway lined on both sides with willow trees that leads to a 10,000 square foot limestone mansion in the woods. If you're in the area! :)

Where is Home?
There are some flat streches of land: But it's not all flat! You just have to know the right places (i.e. the southside, and around the river valleys)

Where is Home?
Me too! And being that it is a small town, we may even know the same Mary LOL

Are you a METROSEXUAL?
Eau Contraire! :) I have an Italian background and Italians are extremely hairy! Lucky me.......not :(

What famous "CURRENT" athletes are from your Ohio city?
None that I can think of from my immediate city; but 15 miles away in Willard, Ohio is where Cleveland Browns' quarterback Charlie Frey is from!

Indiana state slogan
LOL That is great! My mom is from Indiana and so most of her family is located there! How about: "The Land of the Lost" or, since they are the crossroads of America, how about "You'll have to drive through here sometime" LOL

Are you a METROSEXUAL?
Actually, save your money...if you pick up a few random mags....you'll notice that the bare chested trend is starting to go away. Apparently, women and gay men are suddenly finding that they like men that are a little more natural. I have never done it...but I have heard it itches like a bitch when it starts growing in....like 10 minutes after you have it done. I know what you mean and yes, a little body hair can be appealing, but I am just a little more "natural" (in the body hair sense) than I would like to be :)

Are you a METROSEXUAL?
Thank you, Mayday :)

Are you a METROSEXUAL?
I am soft-of a metrosexual..........I probably won't become a full-blown metrosexual until I lose some weight! (I'm 180 pounds........I'd like to be 165 or so), then I'll go all out with new clothes, etc. However, I am currently working out 'cause I am going to Hawaii this summer. But I gotta get my body (stomach, chest, etc.) waxed (as painful as it may be). I have never done this before and I feel kind of awkward about it; any guys out there ever have a body wax? Are there any good places for this service where I wouldn't feel awkward?

Updated: A discussion on GLBT issues in Ohio (3C's)
We'll see; it depends where the opportunities for my profession are available. I really love Ohio; the scenery, the people, the stuff to do and enjoy. But since I am going into meteorology, that line of work tends to have people relocating a time or two or three :-D Personally, I would like to get a job in the Cleveland area; but who knows?!

Religion in America - (Demographic Maps)
Did anyone take notice of the Muslim map? There are like 7 or 8 counties shaded in with 2.2 - 10.6 percent (the highest amount the legend goes up to). And wouldn't you know an Ohio county is one of those 7 or 8! Cuyahoga? No Lucas? No Franklin? No Wood? Yes. That is very interesting to me; I wonder why this primarily agricultural county of less than 150,000 people bordering the Toledo metro area is home to one of the highest Muslim populations per capita per county in the country? Could BGSU have something to do with it? I find that interesting! :)

Updated: A discussion on GLBT issues in Ohio (3C's)
I am gay but I don't live in any of the big three C's. I was born in a small town; and it is tough at times living openly in a small town (you have to be very careful who you come out to). But nonetheless, small-town life is pleasant and I have Cleveland and Toledo about an hour away and Columbus about 2 hours away! However, I am glad I am away at college near Chicago (definitely not a small town). :)

Ohio in literature
Although not the type of history that pertains to the general purpose of this site, this book is nonetheless an interesting read! It chronicles historical weather events throughout Ohio: Thunder in the Heartland: A Chronicle of Outstanding Weather Events in Ohio by Thomas W. Schmidlin and Jeanne Applehans Schmidlin

Where is Home?

Country Road Riding
Yay! My common sense kicked in and I was able to figure out how to post images! WOOHOO  PS. Sorry, Jeff I just kind of realized that I hijacked your topic with my pictures; I initially thought "Country Road Riding" meant for any photos from rural areas. My bad :(

Winter! Post your pics here!
I have some photos from just after that blizzard that hit a few days before Christmas in 2004. At my parents' house, we received just over 20 inches of snow from that one storm; quite unusual for north central Ohio. Here is a view looking south (upstream) from my parents' lower backyard. Here is a picture of a bridge near Norwalk. Here is another view from a further distance. Here is a view looking off of a nearly 100-foot cliff.
