An Ohio culture?
There is a pretty popular shrine just south of Bellevue as well, the Shrine of the Sorrowful Mother.....I was a product of K-12 Catholic Schools, so we utilized that place quite often. Agreed. The people I've encountered in Illinois kind of gave me a blank stare when I said you can eat Buckeyes lol. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Also, I thought this was an Ohio thing but the more I looked into it and have asked around over the years, I believe it is just a Sandusky-area thing. Every New Years (and only at that time of year), local bakeries (I believe only 1 still does it) would bake giant sweet-bread pretzels. They are larger than a frisbee and have more of a bread-texture (rather than hard/crunchy pretzel) and also have a sweet glaze. I always had this growing up, and I just assumed it was a statewide thing. Apparently it's a unique Sandusky tradition.....and unfortunately, this tradition is fading away :-( I found this article on the pretzels: http://sanduskyhistory.blogspot.com/2006/12/new-years-pretzel.html I'm curious. Anyone here ever heard of this?!

Level 3 - Jan. 28 2009 ice/snowstorm
I've always wondered what those Level Snow Emergency things meant. Are they issued by the state or the local county??? They never issue them in Erie County or Huron County or Lorain County for that matter...... Regardless, I think if people just use common sense, you can still travel. Oh, and between my time in Ohio and Illinois, I've noticed that Ohio is WAY MORE SUPERIOR when it comes to taking care of snowy/icy roads.......all the more reason to come back :) lol

Norwalk / Huron County: Development and News
Norwalk's own Sears store opens http://www.norwalkreflector.com/articles/2009/02/03/front/iq_678143.txt By AARON KRAUSE - Reflector Staff Writer | Tuesday February 03 2009, 11:47am NORWALK - Even without a sign announcing its presence, the new Sears store on Main Street drew a couple hundred patrons Saturday, owner Jim Graves said. The roughly 7,200 square-foot store, with an additional 5,000 square feet of storage space, opened for business Saturday five days after the store's interior was little more than some pegboards and display cabinets. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is certainly a pleasant surprise, given Norwalk's particularly rough economic times and the tendency for new stores to locate outside of the central business district on US 250 near the Erie County line. :-)

'Sometimes it's not good to be No. 1' http://www.norwalkreflector.com/articles/2009/01/28/front/iq_673916.txt By CARY ASHBY - Reflector Staff Writer | Monday January 19 2009, 10:58am "Sometimes it's not good to be No. 1." That's what Melissa James, the executive director for the Norwalk Area-Huron County Chamber of Commerce, had to say about Huron County's 13.5 percent unemployment rate in December. The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (JFS) announced Tuesday the figure topped the list among the state's 88 counties.

Holiday Season, Chicago Style / There and back on Amtrak
Great photos! The Christmas vibe is just great! And yes....it feels super cold in Illinois (moreso than Ohio, IMO). The wind chills out in the hinterlands west of Chicago were nearly 20 below a few days ago :-o

Depth of Schulman cuts rocks Bellevue http://www.sanduskyregister.com/articles/2008/12/11/front/1021414.txt By CORY FROLIK | Thursday, December 11, 2008 11:03 AM EST BELLEVUE - Workers at A. Schulman in Bellevue knew layoffs were coming. A week or two ago, they were told by management to expect a big announcement Dec. 10. Everyone guessed correctly that the announcement would be about trimming the payroll. What they didn't know was just how many employees would be fired. Company officials confirmed Wednesday that 34 employees at the Bellevue plant -- 9 salaried and 25 hourly -- will be fired by April 2009.

Apple's closing at end of year http://www.goreflector.com/articles/2008/12/04/front/iq_640448.txt By MARY LISA BOOSE - Reflector Staff Writer | Tuesday November 25 2008, 1:47pm The Apple's store in Norwalk will close by the end of the year when the company’s five-year lease for the 205 Milan Ave. building ends. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- This was surprising (and bad) news; Apples was my family's store of choice. Combined with the troubled local economy, the fact that Super Walmart built directly across the parking lot from Apples probably didn't help.
