Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
While I think Baltimore's numbers are admirable, I don't think it is possible to use that city as a measuring stick for Cleveland. About half of the people using Baltimore's public transit are probably travelers making connections there to get to D.C. one way or another.

Cincinnati: West Chester - Ikea Coming to Union Centre
I completely agree!!! I'd rather save the transport cost of money and time, and invest in a little better quality furniture offered near home. However, if an IKEA was within an hour of where I lived, I would probably go to it.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
The May 2006 numbers surprise me. I thought there would be a much more impressive increase in ridership.

hip hop doesn't evolve. its a pattern of new artists that soon die. Rock has kind of taken over in the past few years. It is more popular with younger people where Hip-Hop once ruled. Hip-Hop was such a junior high thing for me and my peers. I know very few people who are still interested in it.

^You are ridiculous. I think its more likely time for you to move out of your Shaker Square apartment and check into the The Alcazar.

Hip-Hop is dying anyway; in fact almost literally. really, who cares.

For me, I'd say my favorite Ohio Band is Cobra Verde.

Cincinnati: West Chester - Ikea Coming to Union Centre
Ikea would be a fantastic draw for any downtown Ohio city, but unfortunetly I'm not sure if there is quite enough vacant space to accomodate the space Ikea needs to build a store. It seems to require a lot of land - even more so than the average big box store. It is a shame though, because I do believe this is one retailer where no matter where it is located - people will go to it. Those are the type of retailers we need in our downtowns. The closest we could probably get an Ikea to downtown Cleveland would probably be in the Steelyard Commons development, but I don't think it will end up there at this point should it come to Cleveland.

Cincinnati: West Chester - Ikea Coming to Union Centre
I think Cleveland and maybe Steelyard Commons would be an excellent spot for Ikea. However with Pittsburgh and Detroit having one, I bet they will go to Columbus or Cincinnati. It should have come to Cleveland first, because it would be a great spot in the middle of all those metro-areas. I think Ikea screwed up. I heard rumors that Legacy Village was pursuing Ikea for its vaccant Home Depot Expo Design Center.

I think I saw you a couple weeks ago walking down E.4th around 6PM while I was in Flannery's. Based on the photos of yourself and the camera you were carrying, I'm pretty sure it was you.

This was my favorite my article in the PD this morning. Not glad about what's happening, but the story is very entertaining.

Cleveland: Downtown: East 4th Street Developments
I found out about the closing because I saw a blurb in the paper today and called them. Arts and Life section in The Pop Ten - (things to do THIS week). "1. British Invasion at the V Lounge Mods and rockers agree: Tuesday is the new Saturday at one of the city's coolest club nights. With tunes from The Who to the Arctic Monkeys and $2 beers, it's a don't miss midweek night out. 347 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, below Vivo." Anyway, I had called because I wanted to know what time they openned so I could go tonight. I had been to the V Lounge once before. It has a really cool atmosphere. I really liked the place and their lounge music, but this night in particular sounded like it would appeal more to my friends, so I really wanted to go. The guy on the phone said they closed last week. Last Thursday was the last night they were openned. Pictures of the place are on their website: http://www.vivo-chicago.com/vivo-cleveland.html#vlounge Information about the club is listed on Vivo's website, and they were just mentioned in the paper, but because of the location I don't think too many people knew about it. It has an extremely discreet entrance off the Euclid Avenue entrance to the Arcade. There is a "V" on a sign at the top of a stairway that marks in entrance. Its a really cool idea and the location is cool, but had the club been located in the Warehouse District, it probably would have gotten much more traffic. I don't know if there is really the market for such clubs in the E.4th District YET. I think entertainment venues, dining, and retail has a lot of potential, but everyone looking for "clubs" will most certainly head to the Warehouse District for quite some time.

V Lounge is closed indefinately, and is only available for private parties.

I JUST stopped over at the E.4th leasing office. They wouldn't tell me who or when exactly the new retail tennants would be announced, but they said they expect to have the street nearly fully leased and occupied by next summer.

Who is the Best Guitarist of All Time?
Well I will definately check him out Fat Fish sometime, but I kind of find it hard to believe. BTW, I've been to Mike's Barn in Elyria before. That's where I first heard Schwartz. That is such a cool place. Listening to great local bands in an old barn, and BYOB! Maybe I'll go on the 23rd.

Who is the Best Guitarist of All Time?
I was there actually, but check your message until after I went. I was there with a girlfriend of mine. We are both fairly young; just 21 years old, and we were sitting on a couple stools next to the ledge along the windows on the right side of the bar. We were drinking Miller High Life in bottles. Maybe you saw us. Hooples is a very blue collar no frills bar, but the skyline views and especially the music draw people from considerable distances. The Shwartz Brothers play every Thursday night, and supposedly "for free". Here is the link to the place: http://www.hoopples.com/ There is no cover or bouncer at the door, BUT the bartenders may in fact immediately ask for ID when you walk in if you are younger looking. If you are under, they force you to leave. When I was under I tried to convince them to let me stay with a number of excuses/reasons, and they didn't accept them. Now I'm 21, but on Thursdays when the Shwartz brothers play, this has happened to me and my friends everytime. If you are older looking and kind of sneak in by yourself without the bartenders seeing and just grab a seat a table, you can probably get away with it. Here is some info on the Schwartz Brothers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glen_Schwartz Another great venue for live blues music in Cleveland is the Parkview Nite Club!!! The same owner that owns Hooples owns this place to. It is where I stole my avatar from. Wednesday nights they have a great jam session. No cover, and you can definately go under. This is a great off-the-beaten path "Cleveland" place in my opinion. Interesting crowd, vintage bar/decor from the 1940s, and vintage Cleveland memorabilia on the walls. This place is in a very obscure location, but people come from all different places in the area. The food there is surprisingly good. Even the presentation of the food is pretty classy, considering the very casual atmosphere. Their link is here: http://www.parkviewniteclub.com/ Is anyone reading this thread interested in meeting at Hooples next Thursday? I'm not sure if I have any plans, but if I don't I'll probably be there.

Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway: Battery Park
The two arrangements, duplexes and row houses, are really no different; one not necessarily being more desirable than the other. For some reason row houses seem to have a little better acceptance, but I have seen some horribly decrepid row houses and some fantastic bottom-top duplexes. The duplexes are sooo Cleveland, and I didn't understand the comment in a negative way at all. This housing arrangement's prevelance is somewhat unique to Cleveland. I think the only reason why we are seeing more interest in building-new/fixing row houses is because of their assocations with other cities. While I don't mind row houses, it would be nice to see some efforts to actually build-new/fix our bottom top duplexes. I personally think there are a lot of advantages to a bottom-top duplex. The almost always have full front porches/balconies and garages, which are qualities more rare with row houses. bottom-top duplexes yield the same density, and maybe even greater density than row houses. The duplexes are also more adaptable to different uses down the road. They could be converted into single family homes, or mixed-use buildings more easily than row houses.

BTW - I asked a Forest City employee today when the scaffolding will be removed from the top of Terminal Tower. Apparently it will remain there until they are finished "five years" from now. She was serious too.

Cleveland: Perception Issues
KJP- that sounds like a great idea to pitch for the Civic Innovation Lab. They helped get Cool Cleveland and City Wheels started. They give start up grants up to 30K, and I think help you get situated to make it a self-sufficient enterprise.

I stopped drinking diet coke by switching to ice tea; a much healthier option. I don't worry about smoking, because I think the real cause of lung cancer is walking down a street and inhaling exhaust from automobiles.

Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway: Battery Park
I don't see how the entrance resembles a subdivision, although maybe I'm more desencitized to suburbia than I thought. I did grow up in one of 15 developments directly off Walker Road in Avon Lake. But anyway, those signs and flowers definately look temporary to me, and it appears that they are integrating into neighborhood streets like W.74th. I like the fact that they are saving the powerhouse and converting it into a community building, but I wish they could take down the smokestack. It's probably to expensive or risking damage to the building.
