Cycling Advocacy
I bought a bike towards the end of last summer. I made an investment, so I want to keep it in good condition. Is there anything I should do maintenance-wise for the new season?

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
^ The food at Luxe is good and a trendy twist on relatively casual foods like pizza/sandwich/pasta. I've been there a few times and tried different things. The pizza is the best, so I recommend sticking with that. The prices aren't bad full price, but happy hour offers half price pizzas and thats a great deal. On the topic of Bar Symon in Avon Lake, I am very familiar with the city and location. I personally object to the restaurant here on principle and no doubt the news surprised me. However, I think he can pull off this concept successfully considering a number of things. 1. First and foremost, this conecpt has a lower price point and will be more casual than Lola's or Swingoes. I've never seen a formal restaurant do well in Avon Lake. [The only thing close to formal dining is Fratello's which has been around for a while and has a loyal following from within and outside the community.] 2. Most Avon Lake residents prefer chains and are skeptical of independants, but with Symon's name recognition they should respond well. Its like they need validation that a well known name provides in order to try new things. Though "Swingoes" has been around a long time, it didn't really provide the punch. 3. The location is somewhat smart. I expect they will attract both a crowd from eastern Lorain County that Lola's would not draw, and a crowd from western Cuyahoga County already familiar with Lola's and wanting something by Symon but new/different. 4. The space is practically move-in ready for Symon, which is probably one of the reasons he choose Avon Lake over anywhere else even though it is in a strip mall. It is pretty swanky There isn't really anything like this space in the western suburbs other than Pier W or Three Birds. People in Avon Lake like my parents and their friends are really excited about it. There is a buzz and people are talking about it. It will be interesting to see what happens. I am really curious to know how it will affect the strip mall. The strip mall has struggled ever since Tops closed. That space along with others have been vaccant for some time.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
Tower City still has a lot to gain from the Covention Center at the Mall. (It's practically across the street for crying outloud.) Forest City should just chill out, and figure out ways to benefit from the fact development is happening downtown right outside of Tower City.

Cleveland: Retail News
Anyway, on the topic of Clifton Web moving to Avon Lake: I don't know if it will work. The greeting card/gift shops at that location in the Landings never did well to begin with and it was always changing ownership. It doesn't come close to the amount of foot traffic or automobile traffic as Clifton Blvd. True, there is a vacancy now in Avon Lake, so I guess we'll see. I also hope the owner will change some of his merchandise/concept, because I don't think rainbow flags will fly too in Avon Lake either. What a shame for Edgewater to loose an independant shop.

Cleveland: Retail News
I'm not saying that this guy with retail plan for Euclid stole my idea, but it is consistent with my vision for Euclid, which has been posted on the forum several times including the old post below:

Cleveland-Lakewood: Enhance Clifton Transit Project
As a Lakewood resident, it is very exciting about the Clifton BRT. I thought it made sense from the article that the line would tie into and travel through the shoreway. I like the idea a lot, but I wonder if an alternative to Clifton-Shoreway route could be considered where the route would go Clifton-Lake-Detroit. This would increase the people within walking distance of the route, because once you get to the Shoreway no one lives North of it. But if the route were to travel South East down Lake Avenue (where it intersects Clifton) and then westward down Detroit into downtown, you have the line more accessible to more people. Also, you have a more direct approach into downtown via Detroit.

Cleveland: Shaker Square: Development and News
It was announced somewhere recently that Corral Company is now focusing on aggressively purchasing existing apartment buildings as opposed to developing new properties. It specifically mentioned Shaker Square as one of the target areas.

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
I never had much experience with Nikko's, but I went enough to witness its different transitions. When it was just Nikko's the food was good. Then it changed to Bar 2 and it was a nice trendy alternative to the typical Lakewood pub with a nice dance floor and the sushi was surprisingly good. Then a different crowd starting hanging out there, the dance floor took over, and it was a bit warehouse district. Then they brought back the Nikko's menu and it was filthy with horrible service. I'm not surprised it closed.

How do you get your movies?
I mainly use Blockbuster to rent. I've used Redbox twice. But I actually buy previously viewed DVDs more than anything either at Blockbuster or Record Exchange.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
I think you could make a conflict of interest argument for any individual who serves on a board. It isn't really a big deal. Thats how boards work. You would want the publisher of the Plain Dealer on the board of the GCP, becuase it makes the PD leadership more aware of the goals and workings of the GCP.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
People leave those issues out, because they aren't as future-oriented as urban planners. Politicians will tend to focus on the cost, event planners will focus on logistics, and downtown stakeholders will do everything they can to maximize their own share of revenue potential. I have always been an advocate for the mall site, because I believe it will satisfy everyone in the end and prove to be a superior site selection. However, until the findings about the cost comparison, the strongest argument for the mall site was from a future-oriented urban planning perspective.

Cleveland - Ohio City
I wasn't sure exactly where to post this, but I found a great apartment available in Ohio City. Great location and its only 450 for a one bedroom. http://www.pluggedincleveland.com/rentals/view.cgi?num=6905

Cleveland: University Circle (General): Development and News
It sounds to me like the rink will be located on the actual Wade Oval. It will probably be some kind of temporary setup for the winter season that will be removed in the Spring. I'm imagining something similar to what was at Crocker Park in the winter a couple years ago.

Cleveland: HealthLine / Euclid Corridor
I think there are several negatives on double decker busses 1. More limited space for wheelchairs and bicycles on board 2. More difficult to facilitate quick loading and unloading of passengers.

Mill Creek, Battery Park, and Other Possible Neighborhoods
If you are a resident of Cleveland and send your children to private grade schools and high schools in the city of Cleveland, you receive a voucher (regardless of income?). There are a number of very reputable Catholic grade schools especially in the West Park neighborhood, and St. Joseph Academy in West Park (all girls) and St. Ignatius High School in Ohio City (all boys) are prestigious college prep schools. Also, John Carroll University gives nearly full tuition scholarships for city of Cleveland residents regardless of income.

Mill Creek, Battery Park, and Other Possible Neighborhoods
I have no idea if there are many children in Battery Park, although I think there are a fair amount of children in the neighborhood. I know many attend Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and that school has a very good reputation. Although Detroit-Shoreway is up-and-coming, West Park is a very sound middle class family-oriented neighborhood within the city of Cleveland. You may want to look at homes there. Lakewood - the suburb just west of Edgewater - has no shortage of children. There is a development similar to Battery Park being built there with tax abatements, although I don't think they are quite as generous. http://www.rockportsquare.com

Cleveland / Lakewood: The Edge Developments
I do not know anything about Rego Brothers moving to Clifton, but I noticed they closed their location on Lakewood Heights Blvd relatively recent. They have openned up new locations in former Tops spaces like Kamm's Corners and Westlake on Columbia.

Cleveland / Lakewood: The Edge Developments
Well, Bob Stark is maybe stretching himself thin with his projects - but considering his openness to mixed-use - maybe he could be canvassed to redevelop his property on W.117th into a TOD

Lakewood: Development and News
Vulpster03 replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Northeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionI know very little about real estate, but why not make the loft building rental unit apartments instead? I think there is a huge untapped market for newer construction rental units in Lakewood. Maybe there could even be a rent-credit program.

Columbus: Downtown: Highpoint / Columbus Commons
Although I'm not advocating the city of Columbus to purchase the site, it isn't unheard of that a city would own a retail complex. Transit stations and market halls were typically owned by the municipality. Most airports are owned by a city. And the West Side Market in Cleveland is still owned by the city.
