Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
Hi, I know I haven't posted in a long time, but I have been lurking. Since I've been eating out more than usual, I wanted to give some restaurant news and reviews: The Phoenix Coffee in Lakewood is expanding to a location a few doors down, they will have more space and an expanded food menu. I just talked with a barista there this weekend and he said they just got their building permit and plan to be moved in there in a couple months. In restaurant closings, I noticed the Hylander on Detroit in Lakewood has closed (not that I ever ate there), and Cereal Central, also on Detroit in Lakewood. I'm not sure if it even ever opened, but it's for sale. I have to give Latitude 41 N in Detroit Shoreway a plug because my BF and I LOVE this place. We've been there about 4 or 5 times now and keep trying new items each time and everything we've gotten has been excellent. The breakfast menu is particularly delicious. And the prices are very reasonable for the quality and portions that you get. Unfortunately we hardly ever see anyone in there, I've never seen the place close to full, even on a Saturday night or Sunday morning. I'm just worried they may not make it. I highly recommend you check it out! We also love Luxe, though we can't afford to go there as often. The "small plates" are definitely small, so don't get that if you're really hungry, but everything has been delicious and unique. Tiny little Tartine in Rocky River is also very cozy and much more relaxed for a glass of wine than Wine Bar Rocky River, which seems like it's always slammed. I also recommend 56 West in Lakewood. Great sandwiches, etc. If you can't get in at Melt (which you usually can't), try this place. Has anyone heard any news about Krazy Mac's? I heard it was coming to Lakewood and I see the old location has closed, but I haven't seen it moving in anywhere. I also see that Lockkeepers is back in Dante's spot, any news about the opening of the Tremont location?

CD/DVD Drive needed
I need to replace my CD-RW/DVD drive on my Dell. Can anybody recommend a good computer parts store where I can buy a replacement and the staff can help me select something compatible for a reasonable price?

Lakewood to Brecksville
I live in Lakewood and commute to Valley View every day, which is just a couple miles north of Brecksville. It's a fairly easy commute since you're generally going the opposite direction of most rush hour traffic aside from the stretch on 90, which is sometimes backed up. I work weird hours so I rarely hit rush hour traffic, I usually get to work in 20-25 minutes. Since you'll be driving during rush hour, you would need to give yourself at least a half hour in case of a backup on 90. I have personal experience with some of the rental places in Lakewood and could tell you some places to avoid, feel free to IM me, I don't want to badmouth any companies publicly on this board. I like my building and my neighborhood alot (Clifton near 117th), I would recommend it. If you give us some more details about what amenities you are looking for and what is most important to you, price range, etc. we can probably make some recommendations of places you might want to look at. Welcome!

What Kind of American English Do You Speak?
Do you guys use the term Devilstrip for the treelawn? It's apparently very unique to the Akron area. Does anyone know how it originated for people to say "Right?" or "Yeah, right?" with an uplift at the end of the word as if they are questioning what you are saying, but they actually mean it like "Yeah, exactly!" For instance, if I say, "The Christmas Ale at Great Lakes sure packs a wallop!" They might reply, "Right?" I have a friend from NY who says this constantly. I think I first heard this in college from some girls who were from PA and found it bizarre because when people said "Yeah, right" where I was from, it was generally in a sarcastic tone and meant the complete opposite. Or else if you said, "Yeah, right!" to agree with someone, it didn't sound like a question. Also, has anyone else noticed that the accent of NE Ohio has been getting progressively more nasally? I notice more and more people pronouncing things like pencil "pincil" and thanks "thinks". I worked with a woman who lived around here all her life as far as I know and had the most extreme accent I've ever heard. When she said "back" it sounded like two long drawn out syllables, "bee-yack." I guess accents continuously evolve, but I wonder why it's going in this direction. Then again, maybe I'm hearing things and it's always been this way.

Sounds good. Just FYI, be careful where you park around there, some places are fine, others they will definitely tow. I know Pizza Hut tows. There's a map here showing where you can park: http://www.brotherslounge.com/calendar.php I believe it's also posted on their front door. Maybe we should exchange a few cell phone numbers via PM in case anyone is running late, gets lost, whatever.

What if we began and ended at Brothers? That way if people don't feel comfortable riding after dark, they can park there and drive home.

Cleveland: Downtown: East 4th Street Developments
I don't think the second floor of the Pickwick building is part of the residential conversion. As far as I know, Pickwick still owns that floor and has always hoped to expand up there. For now they use it for storage. We occasionally used to rehearse shows up there. There is a big old bank safe in one of the old office spaces as I believe it was last used as a bank? Those metal studs have been there for years I think. Part of some movie was filmed in there, I wish I could remember which one, it involved a scene where guys broke through somebody's kitchen wall...some of what's left of the set is still there...maybe someone else knows.

Cleveland: Demolition Watch
I received the following email from APOC via the Cleveland Colectivo. Anyone know what buildings these are that are being demolished? (Chris Kious included his phone and email FYI if anyone wants to participate, but I didn't want to post it on the web. If you want to contact him, send me a PM and I will get you the info) Dear Colectivo, A Piece Of Cleveland needs your help! Two school buildings (built in the 1880's) are going to be knocked down next week. The crane is coming and we are under the gun to reclaim some good old wood flooring. Remember that you asked us: "how can we help/volunteer"? Well, here is your opportunity to get acquainted with deconstruction at a 'hands-on' level! This Saturday, Sunday, and possibly Monday APOC will have a real need for volunteers. Knowledge in deconstruction is not necessary, just a desire to learn and help. You will get dirty, but it's honest work and tons of fun. We will need people to wear proper clothing (work gloves and boots) and let me know when you can come by. Thanks for helping to spread the word! Best regards, Chris Kious APOC- A Piece Of Cleveland

After work on a weekday would work better for me, plus once it starts getting hot, I prefer to bike after the sun is down a bit (my pasty white Irish skin doesn't do sun). Maybe we could meet in OC and stop for smoothies at Johnnie Mango afterwards...mmmm...pina colada....

NEOphytes, new site for Cleveland newbies
I would really love to have some UOers at this event. Whether you can or cannot attend, if you would post something, anything on the forum, it would really help me to have as many registered members, posts, welcomes and activity on the site as possible as I start to spread the word over the next few weeks and people start finding the site. (It's that chicken and egg thing that makes it hard to start something new like this, no one wants to post anything if there is no activity on the site, and there won't be any activity on the site until people start posting. Same thing for the first event - no one wants to RSVP unless they know others are going, but the others won't go if no one RSVPs...) Announcing the first NEOphytes event! Whether you are new to Cleveland or a passionate local who wants to help welcome those who are, mark your calendars for the first NEOphytes Meet & Mingle on Tuesday, June 17. Meet other new Clevelanders, discuss and share ideas about the future and mission of NEOphytes, and enjoy beer, wine, light appetizers and live music at this MOCA Mix event. RSVPs are not required, but it would help us to plan if you respond to this thread so we can get an idea of how many will be coming. Event details: Tuesday, June 17, 2008 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm MOCA Mix: sounds: Vialka Members FREE / $6 Non-members (this refers to MOCA members, not NEOphytes members) Cash bar / appetizers complimentary provided by NEOphytes (Map below) “Vialka can switch styles in seconds... in one exhilarating piece. My face hurts. I can’t stop smiling. Four stars!” Stewart Lee / The Sunday Times (London/GB) The traveling husband and wife duo, Eric Boros (guitar & voice) and Marylise Frecheville (percussion & voice), Vialka combines medieval tropes, with the ferocity of a power punk trio. Yet somehow they manage to make beautiful songs, full of fairy tale-like endings, sad turns, and tragic young lovers. Cleveland: Flats East Bank
When I lived in Cuyahoga Falls, the Summit County Library had a temporary location in an old big box store while the new downtown location was being completely expanded and renovated. Near the entrance they had a small bookstore that sold used library books, it wasn't always open though. I don't know if they kept this feature in the new location, but I thought it was a smart idea, most libraries do a sale a few times a year, why not just sell the books year-round, unless staffing is a consideration.

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
Are they being forced to take that giant triangular sign down at the new store? I was driving down E. 9th tonight and it was on some crane type thing and a big vinyl sign is now hung flush with the wall. I couldn't tell if they moving it or removing it.
