Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine: Development and News
We were actually going to go to them to see what they could do about helping us organize our living room with a full wall shelving solution. Wanted to go local, but oh well.

Getting Involved in OTR's renaissance
It does meet tomorrow. I've only been to one of their meetings, but expect to be there a while (unless you leave early like I did). I've heard they often go over two hours, but they may have gotten better recently. They'll have: 1) the police/fire give an update of what's been happening in the neighborhood, 2) have a speaker or two, 3) go over permit requests, liquor licenses, and/or upcoming projects in the neighborhood, and 4) go over any new business brought up by the membership. Even if you're not a paid member you're free to participate and ask questions when the audience is polled (i.e. police ask if there are any questions/concerns, speaker(s) ask for feedback/questions, council board requests feedback,...). My experience is more with the Downtown Residents Council, but the meeting format is generally the same between councils (although some neighborhood council group meetings like those in the West End can be a bit rancorous at times). Note: Unless you are a paid member (I believe it is only a couple of dollars to join and you must live in the neighborhood boundaries), you will be unable to vote on anything (like any potential motions). If it is your first meeting you'll probably not want to vote on anything anyway until you get more up to speed about what's going on in the neighborhood.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
A couple of years ago a friend of mine and I were doing a scheduled Citizens on Patrol walk during the State of the City speech at the Duke Energy Convention Center. We saw then Councilwoman Ghiz walking from her car on the street (only a half block away) to the convention center. She made an off-hand comment to us to the affect that she would require either us or a police escort to her car after the event. The event was to end a good hour or so before sundown and she was parked only a couple hundred feet away on a well traffic'd area in the Central Business District. I find it amusing that a huge chunk of the deficit is due to her insistence to hire more police officers (due to her fraidy-cat, scared of her own shadow mentality), while she wrongly blames the streetcar project as bankrupting the city.

Cincinnati: Restaurant News & Info
bfwissel replied to The_Cincinnati_Kid's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & EntertainmentNow open for lunch, M-F 11-3. Just did some take-out from there (can do take-out buffet or menu). The service was a little slow (not too surprising as they just opened), but the food was awesome!

Suburban Sprawl News & Discussion
High court rules against impact fees "Ohio Supreme Court ruled Thursday that Warren County’s growing Hamilton Township cannot impose so-called “impact fees” on developers to force them to pay for public services such as roads and police." http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20120531/NEWS/305310027/High-court-rules-against-impact-fees?odyssey=nav|head Any thoughts on how that would encourage continued sprawl? Seems to me that townships will be forced to continue to subsidize the infrastructure of sprawl.

PG is the worst kind of politician, a wannabe career politician. He refuses to take a public stand on anything and justifies his votes with BS reasoning. He is opposed to the streetcar, but will never publicly state it. It took quite a bit of arm twisting for a friend of mine to pry out his opposition stance on the streetcar.

Off Topic
Totally random question, but does anyone know if the City of Cincinnati (or Hamilton County) keeps blueprints for projects like a condo conversions of a historic buildings? XUMelanie and I would like to put in a gas fireplace like some of our neighbors have, but we're not sure if a gas line was run behind the wall or not. We're hoping they just ran the line and capped it when the previous owner decided not to have a fireplace as part of his finishings. I've searched CAGIS as well as the Hamilton County Auditor site for permits, but could find nothing other than generic "reset inspections" and "certificate of occupancy" documents.

US Economy: News & Discussion
The problem is that only about half of working people have access to 401Ks. Of those people, not everyone is willing or able to contribute to a 401K. Those that do contribute do so well below the maximum. Also, over the last decade or so the performance of the stock market has been pathetic to say the least. With all this in mind, 401Ks would be a perfect replacement of Social Security if you don't mind the vast majority of Americans living in abject poverty upon retirement. That would leave either taxpayers on the hook to sustain those retirees, or just simply allowing them to suffer and die. At least with Social Security you're forcing working people to put aside some of their dollars for a rainy day.

Getting Involved in OTR's renaissance
A good place to start would be the Over-the-Rhine Community Council which meets every last Monday of the month at 5:30pm at the OTR Community Center @ 1715 Republic Street. From there you could either become more involved with the neighborhood council, or just use it as a way to meet others who are involved in the community other groups that best suit your interests. If you want to get involved with the downtown community council we meet every second Tuesday at 6:00pm in the Main Branch Library in the Third Floor Tower Room. http://www.ilivedowntown.com/

Cincinnati: Bars / Nightlife News
The old Eye Mart corner location at 7th and Walnut has the windows papered over, has different types of balls (baseball, basketball, etc...) window clinged in front of the paper, has a large lower-case "b" next to the door, and the door itself says something to the affect of "bouncing here soon". Anyone have any idea what this is going to be?

Cincinnati: Bars / Nightlife News
Simon Says on Walnut between 4th and 5th has expanded into the space next door. They have removed some of the wall between the two spaces and the additional space appears to be a dance floor.

Cincinnati: Downtown: Heritage Bank Center
I'd argue it's a bad arena and bad location. It is impossible to watch the game unless you're near the floor. That is why they've installed large screen TVs to display the action on the court for the fans to actually be able to follow the game. The only reason the games are packed is that Dayton has no professional sports and sports starved Daytonites lap up the tickets. P.S. I went to UD for my undergrad and almost never made it to the arena due in large part to the location.

Cincinnati: Good things to do in downtown
Oh man, where do you go from here. How about a few of the below: 1) New Christian Moerlein Lagger House 2) Toby Keith's - I Love This Bar and Grill 3) Gateway Quarter / Vine Street Scene 4) Show at the Aronoff 5) Contemporary Arts Center 6) Neons Bar near Main and 12th (great patio as we experienced last night) 7) Blue Wisp Jazz Club 8) Performance at Music Hall 9) Restaurant Row on Sixth Street 10) Events at The Taft Theater 11) Events on Fountain Square (albeit they're just ramping up for Spring) 12) If you must, Newport on the Levee ...those are just off the top of my head. I'll try to think more later. Note: When all else fails he could stop by the Visitors Center on Fountain Square (albeit only open limited hours during the day) to get more ideas.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
Agreed, that section of Elm is unbelievable. And when the whole street is finished those buildings will be some of the most coveted in the whole city. That blue house with the beige trim is currently for sale if anyone is looking to buy! Right across the street from the new Washington Park! XUMelanie and I were looking at that building (1215 Elm) years ago, but decided at $300K and somewhere in the $100K range to do fixing up was a bit out of our league.

Does anyone know if there will be a stop at 4th and Main? I've seen two versions of the shelter locations and one includes 4th/Main while the other does not.

The rumor I heard is that there was some issue with P&G as a global company owning a business that manufactured foods with genetically modified (GM) ingredients.

Just another example of Kroger caring more about profit over community. Since they have their corporate headquarters here nobody confronts them on things like this.

The recruiter contacted me through a mass email via LinkedIn. Figured it wasn't worth burning any bridges in case I become unemployed and forced to take a job outside downtown.

I guess that now that the five years of incentives are over they're planning on moving. I just got an email from a recruiter there looking for IT folks. As a downtowner I only consider working for businesses within walking distance (quality of life). Given their suburban direction this is a business I would not even consider working for unless I were desperate for work.

XUMelanie, myself and our little one will be there at the groundbreaking. I randomly took off work to relax and now I've got something to do :) .
