  1. Yeah, their plan includes un-bricking the windows and doing a lot of restoration work to return it to its former glory. Combining that with a really well planned low-income housing plan makes this one of the most exciting up-and-coming projects for me.
  2. Did anyone see the replay of the March 2nd meeting when Berding went nuts about the right of the Mayor (via the Charter) to set the agenda for the City Council meetings? Does the Charter give Mallory the ability to leave items off the agenda after they leave committee?
  3. XUMelanie and I will be at the parade tonight with little Gavin in his new monk outift that XUMelanie and her friend just sewed up. :-D
  4. My understanding is the petition gatherers have 60 days before the election to get in their petition signatures which would be March 4th I think. As for the groundbreaking, if history is any indication it will be some time in 2013.
  5. The Model Group and Talbert House people spoke at our DRC membership meeting a couple of months ago. Their thoughtful plans include well designed housing and supporting services for helping those in need, a design that is also community friendly, and restoration of a historic building. Last I heard they were having issues raising money, but hopefully this means they are getting close. :)

  7. Does the $46,104.28 starting salary for the police include benefits? Also, let's not forget that thanks to Ghiz pushing to add 100 new officers in 2006 (which Streicher never even asked for) we had a considerable amount of obligations added to our operational budget. Couldn't we let go a portion of those new officers to free up money for: 1) previously allocated budget items of high importance and 2) reducing the deficit? I'm not saying lay off all 100, but given such a large percentage of the operation budget is for police and fire (over 60% I believe) shouldn't they have some real headcount cuts. They have cut back little over the last few years (I think their budgets may actually have grown slightly) when every other department has been cut back at least 30%.
  8. Check out the 251 Walnut stop. There's half a person standing in the middle of the roadway :). http://cincinnati-oh.gov/noncms/projects/streetcar/stops/streetcar_stops.cfm

I might be missing something, but it was my understanding that when an estate is settled you pay estate tax, but not capital gains. When settling an estate you not only wouldn't be double paying taxes, but you wouldn't even be taxed once.
  10. I was at the second of three community dialogs on the casino (albeit briefly since I had to leave early to take a turn watching lil' Gavin) and they announced that groundbreaking was officially starting February 4th.
  11. Sadly, the streetcar opponents continue to gain strength as this project is endlessly delayed. I know there are reasons, but let's face the facts. We will have to continue to fight for this project until the first rail is put in the ground. Honestly, I'm feeling fatigue constantly sticking up for the project. I just hope other supporters have more energy than I do.
  12. I'm with you. I have been seeing starting dates come and go with great frequency and no explanation. This may be par for the course, but at this point I'm losing faith that the project will actually ever get started. Sorry to sound so crabby (baby kept me up again last night), but I'm getting fatigue constantly defending this project with friends, family, co-workers, media, etc....

I felt a short bit of shaking just before 8am. I was going to say something, but I thought my co-workers would think I was nuts claiming it was an earthquake.

XUMelanie and I would have a few people over at our downtown Cincinnati condo a few hours before midnight. Later we would walk down to Fountain Square to buy a beer from the ice bar, see the countdown on the big screen TV that hangs above Macys, cheer at midnight and enjoy the fireworks. Now that we have a lil' one, IF we still have our close friends over one of us will more than likely stay home :( with the baby.
  15. This is what bothers me most about the nonsense people post about pouring oil on the tracks. Arguing that this is something someone could do is at best promoting a life threatening act of sabotage and at worst terrorism. If I were to post that buses are inferior to rail because they are susceptible to someone throwing shards of metal into the street I'd be considered a maniac.
  16. I dislike the whole "country" scene, but I suppose it's good for the City of Cincinnati?

Come on! Where are my other downtown Cincinnati peeps?
  19. I remember putting out our stocking the night before and getting an orange, assorted in shell nuts (walnuts, almonds, those impossible to crack Brazil nuts, etc...) and a small toy. We'd even read the story of St. Nicholas together as a family when we were younger. Come to think of it, with the new baby, XUMelanie and I should start up doing these traditions for our little one.
  20. Got a new job a couple of years ago when my company started the whole "we're gonna outsource all you worthless employees" bit (even though they ultimately did the numbers and realized it was actually better to keep IT in house) and started to cut back salaries and benefits. Now I work long hours at a more stable company that does bankruptcy and foreclosure work (which is good business even in better economic times). Things are great for me, but I do have a bit of a complex being at a company that makes money being the middle man for debtor/creditor financial messes.
  21. Actually, I think part of the problem is their terrible staff (bad even by fast food standards). I love Gold Star, but mostly stopped going after having to deal with their slow, rude, ditzy personnel.
  22. Does anyone have any experience with BarrelHouse from a bar owner perspective (any past/present distribution issues, quality, etc...)?

Our company uses Broadway Commons for parking now and we have another location chosen already which is a bit farther. However, this free parking was eight blocks away to start with, so another block or two doesn't really seem to matter from my standpoint.
