  1. The new restaurants are great news but the street needs a place to get some breakfast. Last Saturday, a lot of tourists in town for the Wisconsin-BG game were wandering around the area looking for a place to eat. Also, it would make the street more vibrant during the day.
  2. An exterior renovation of the Clevelander Bar on East 9th/Huron began last night. The five or so floors above the bar were painted yellow but a power wash is starting the reveal red brick. I don't know what they plan to do with it; it would make a tough apartment conversion because it has no side windows. I also saw the storefront on Euclid. Wasn't there a rumor earlier this year about an Irish pub moving into playhouse square? Some small chain out of Erie, Pa was rumored to open around there.
  3. Cleveland's walls may be talking (and selling) Saturday, August 12, 2006 Susan Vinella Plain Dealer Reporter Get ready for a new look in downtown Cleveland, with City Council likely to give the go-ahead for advertisers to put six big murals on the sides of buildings. The murals could be large vinyl sheets, like the striking 10-story Nike LeBron James ad near Quicken Loans Arena, or flashy electronic signs like the one in Playhouse Square. Council will consider the proposal this fall. It is part of a settlement between the city and Eller Media - now Clear Channel Outdoor - which sued the city seven years ago after the city banned billboards that advertise alcohol in neighborhoods. To reach this Plain Dealer reporter: [email protected], 216-999-5010 I wonder what the locations are, I would hope that 668 Euclid Ave is on the list.
  4. The Cleveland Athletic Club Building on Euclid and 12th has a new tennant in a street level retail space that has been empty for a while now. It was formerly occupied by a beauty school. I'm not sure exactly what it is, but it looks like an office since there are a lot of desks etc. being moved in.
  5. Saint Ignatius is currently raising money for two new construction projects. They plan on putting a performing arts center on the corner of West 30th and Lorain at a cost of roughly 10 million. Also, the school plans on building a student center on Carroll.
  6. I saw in the PD today that the Avenue District sales office is hiring. I'm not looking for a job personally, but I figured some people on this forum are interested in getting a job with a developer.
  7. Crews worked non-stop on Fantasy One for about a month, but no progress since May. However, the club was part of the walk and dine so maybe they haven't given up on it yet.
  8. There are some signs of life in the vacant office building next to the Residence Inn on Prospect. One of the store fronts has been cleaned up and painted so hopefully it will have an occupant soon. I heard last summer that the owner was refusing to renew leases because the building was going to be torn done, but apparently the plans have changed.
  9. I agree with blinker12 , east fourth needs some retail geared towards the residents. The only convenient type store in the area is CVS and they close at 8:00.
  10. I stopped by the Stonebridge open house today and picked up some marketing materials on Stonebridge Plaza. According to the price listing 10 units have been reserved, and that is just for the top three floors. I don't think they are marketing floors 2 -9 yet.
  11. Cleaning/ Restoration began on the prospect side of the May Co. building. The Euclid side has looked nice for some time now, but the back has been a different story. This resoration along with the rennovation of St. Paul's book store into office space will do wonders for lower prospect.
  12. I hope the retail in this project is more everyday necessities instead of high end clothing. With crocker park, legacy village etc. I dont see how this market could handel more expensive retail. Since some clothing should be included on a limited scale, I really hope that they dont follow the tower city model and sign leases with tons of chains which can be found in suburban malls. Although the downtown pop. is growing, any major retail development will need some suburban support. The avenue district must provide retail options that cannot be found in westlake or beachwood.
  13. I remeber hearing that Flannery's was contemplating an expansion in the space where Read's jewlery store was (the demolished building) . Did anyone else hear that?
  14. Jimmy Johns opens May 15. The transformation of that building has been amaizing, it was a huge eyesore a few years ago. I wonder if they have leased out the space next door. It appears that a rennovation is underway.
  15. I've already seen a difference on my street. One of the RTA shelters was constanly filthy and over the last few days it has been very clean. Hopefully they keep up the good work.
  16. The downtown cleveland improvement district clean and safe program started today http://www.wkyc.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=51382
  17. I wonder how this could affect the construction of a new convention center. Maybe the domed stadium could be used for larger events and the current convention center could undego a small rehab so it can be more suitable for smaller conventions. Also, I find it hard to believe that Bob Corna has a meeting with the NFL Commissioner over this. I would imagine that he would need a great deal more political support before this would even be on the radar screen for Tagliabue. Maybe if we get casinos downtown, the revenue they generate could be used to finance this project.
  18. As a former westsider I would like to note that we now have overpriced retail at crocker park (including indigo nation!). However I must concede that the westside is not exactly sophisticated. As for a downtown department store, I hate to be a pessimist but it will be a very long time before that ever happens. There has been so much upscale retail development out in the suburbs recently (corcker park, legacy village) that it would take a brand like Neiman Marcus to draw shoppers downtown. However we will never get a department store like Neiman Marcus because we don't have enough tourists/convention business to help support it. I feel that downtown retail development should focus on smaller stores, like the ones which are presumablely part of the Avenue District.
  19. According to the new sign on the prospect ave. Frangos building, the project is known as "prospect place apartments".
  20. I don't think it is open to the public yet but they have occupied the colonial arcade space. Also, I don't believe the museum is connected to the cleveland sports restaurant. I'm not sure if that restaurant is still going to open, it was supposed to open in march. Has anybody heard anything?
  21. It looks like the baseball heritage museum for east fourth is moving along. It leased 5800 sq. ft in the colonial arcade as a temporary home and is planning to move to a permanent home on east fourth. They are having a street festival may 19-21 to get some public attention. The website is www.baseballheritagemuseum.com
  22. I just joined the CAC and I think it's great they are doing cross promotional events with downtown developers. The CAC bulding on Euclid was in real bad shape until a couple of years ago but they recently renovated it. Also, they signed a 50 year lease in 2003 so they will be on euclid for many years to come.
  23. I thought the tax credits stipulated the property must be a rental for 5 years. The pointe at gateway used historic tax credits and they converted to condos after 5 years, but maybe historic credits are different.
  24. Is the CWRU plan still going foward? I figured that with a 40 million dollar deficit they would not be in a position to be leasing office space. This is the first I've heard about the Higbee building. I know the top floors were partially converted to office space, are they going to finish that and market the space now?
  25. The city club addition is hideous, but I dont see it ever coming down. Does anyone know if there are plans for the building directly next to the future county offices. It's the second building to the east of the trust rotunda. In regards to 668 Euclid, I would much rather see a residential conversion. UH could occupy part of the May Co. or Higbee building. Those buildings are too large to be entirely converted to residential and maybe UH could spur some kind of mixed use development. 668 is big, but it seems reasonable to convert it entirely to apartments/ condos.I remeber reading somewhere that Goldberg devised a plan for 668 that would involve about 200 apartments and indoor parking.
