  1. http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2008/05/16/ncaa "In the 2006 fiscal year, the latest of three examined in the study, only 19 of the 119 Football Bowl Subdivision institutions had positive net revenue, while for the rest, expenses exceeded generated revenues.
  2. ^^ I remember hearing a couple years ago that only about 12 of 116 D-I college teams turned a profit.

The Comfort Inn is the closest on Euclid and East 18th, however, I've read some reviews that says it was kind of dingy. West down Euclid closer to the center of downtown there are the the Wyndham which is very nice and the Holiday Inn Express. Also take a look at Embassy Suites on East 12th.
  4. I know they're still working on it, but it's a more complex thing than they had imagined. Fair point about the beer, but it was a Bud Light. Doesn't taste good warm.
  5. I was so pumped when I heard a jazz bar was opening on East 4th...however this place is terrible. I've gone there 3 times (no jazz each time and it was on a weekend) and the service, prices etc were awful. The final straw was when the bartender gave me a warm beer and started arguing with me. Really? A beer should not be warm at all, especially an overpriced one.
  6. Nice pics, Huron has tons of potential. I always thought that the red brick building next to the Halle garage would be a great apartment building. It could be a nice, quiet residential street.
  7. Looks like Zinc will be opening in early May, http://zinccleveland.com/
  8. I think Clevelander17 has a point about safety, CH has some problems. For example, my friend lives in Coventry and his car was stolen twice last year. CH is by no means a dangerous area but it has some issues.

Check out Huron Square and the Osborne. Both are very close the The Q and Progressive Field. Also look at 425 Lakeside in the Warehouse Dist. I would stay away from Reserve Square, the Chesterfield and National Terminal Warehouse. Good luck with your search.
  10. According to the Cleveland Stater, CSU has dropped its plans to move its art department to East 13th. Apparently the building needed quite a bit of work and the owner wouldn't lower the price enough. I couldn't find a link online, I'll try and post the article when I find it.
  11. ^ Wow, I was not aware of that. They must be nicer than any dorm I ever lived in.
  12. The new CSU student center and education building are both currently under construction. The new dorms are under construction too, but that may not be "large-scale."

I bought a 1 bedroom in the Pointe about 3 years ago and I've been really satisfied with the building. The condo fees are reasonable and there haven't been any assesments so far. Also our building manager does a great job keeping the building in good shape. The only complaints I have are about the parking situation and occasional noise. Carrying groceries from across the streets gets old and finding a spot during a ballgame is a hassle. As for noise, the bars around the building, Winking Lizard, RJ Bolands, Fortis sometimes turn up their outdoor speakers. Their pretty cool about turning it down if you ask but it's still annoying. Good luck with your search and feel free to shoot me a PM if you have any questions.
  14. ^^ That's good point but I think we have a long way to go before we have to worry about a lack of Class B space downtown. I've read that several Class B buildings are 30-40% vacant. Crains recently reported that the Leader and Baker Buildings on East 6th are both about 40% vacant. Also the May Co. building will basically be empty once Key moves over to the Higbee Building.
  15. More good news, the DCA business clips newsletter this month said Stifel Nicolaus has relocated from Westlake to 200 Public Square and leased 15,000 square feet. Their website says they are a brokerage and investment banking firm. There can't be much vacant space left in the building now that this firm, Huntington Bank and Cliffs Natural Resources have moved/plan to move to 200 Public square.
  16. Crains confirmed today that Zoup is taking the space in WT Grant Lofts. Downtown delight Despite a spate of building foreclosures downtown, a handful of new food and retail ventures have taken root along Euclid and Prospect avenues between East Ninth Street and Public Square http://www.crainscleveland.com/section/REALESTATE

Wow, there are some greats photos on this thread. As for a turnaround in EC, I really think its a long shot. It just seems that EC has a unique stigma. For whatever reason people view it as being far worse than other struggling neighborhoods.
  18. ^^ I think it's great that parents are taking charge on this issue, but doesn't Urban Community School already serve this area?
  19. ^^ Do those cities have an amount of retail in the suburbs comparable to Cleveland's suburbs? Maybe they can support downtown shopping because their suburban markets aren't completely saturated. I'm not very familiar with the cities you listed, but I think that Cleveland's oversupply of suburban malls might be a big factor in explaining why we don't have downtown retail.
  20. You're right that many parents in Cleveland work long hours to support their children, but it only takes about 2 minutes to return a phone call from a teacher. My wife has been teaching in urban schools for 4 years and I could give dozens of stories about parents who flat out don't care. The kids who succeed have parents who take an interest in their child's education.
  21. ^ I think that's a good idea as the students seem to be pretty supportive of adding a team . Any idea when it will take place?
  22. I'm not aware of any student body vote about football. The athletic department put together a feasibility study last year and I think it made a pretty convincing case for bringing football on campus. However, I haven't heard anything since the study was released in October. Here's a link to the study...http://www.csuvikings.com/genrel/100909aaa.html
  23. ^^ I think a small part of Cleveland is in the Garfield Heights district, but I'm not sure.
  24. I'm not really familiar with this building and I'm generally ignorant about construction so this may be a dumb question, but is there any chance of a residential conversion?
  25. This might be old news but Cadillac Ranch is no longer serving lunch and is only open on Sundays for special events. I've gone there a few times and each time was a disappointment. However, I really want this place to succeed because it brings some life to Public Square at night
