Sandusky-Erie Islands: Random Development and News
Lawsuit filed over toxic land Port Clinton News Herald, 4/13/06 An Akron company dropped its plans for an island housing development last year after discovering pesticides contaminated the land, according to a lawsuit filed Friday. Land-owners James and Judith Rofkar of Catawba Island knew the 34 acres off Northwest Catawba Road near Linda Drive were toxically polluted but tried to sell them to Capital First Development LLC anyway, the company alleges in the lawsuit it filed in Ottawa County Common Pleas Court. The couple owned and operated an apple orchard on the property and used chemicals and pesticides in that business, said Capital First's attorney, Craig Eoff of Akron. The Rofkars' phone number is disconnected, and no one answered the door at their Northwest Catawba Road home Wednesday evening. A family member was unable to put the News Herald in contact with the couple.

Is Over-the-Rhine As Bad As They Say?
@ Cdawg I think what im trying to say is by looks alone a person from the outside whose never been to Toledo probably couldnt tell a place is "ghetto" without looking at crime statistics. For example theres parts of Detroit and Cleveland that simply looks like a bomb got dropped on it and by looks alone you say "wow, thats ghetto". Also ghetto refers to a poor race, ethnicity, who have been ISOLATED. Thats why i said no real ghetto. ah yes but I forgot about Vistula, which is odd because one of my best buddies lives in that area and im always interested in the wild stories he tells me. Your right on the race thing, I think thats whats throwing me off too..Its just not the stereotypical "Boyz in the Hood" type ghetto you see on TV, the media has screwed alot of us up in the head actually..I wonder how common "intergrated ghettos" even are. I wonder whats stopping Toledo from annexing Ottawa Hills anyway, its practically surrounded by the city. As for other high income area theres also an area called Stone Oak which is a supposably more wealthy than Ottawa Hills and extremely nice but I dont know if thats included in the metro.

Toledo: Glass City Metro Park & Marina / National Museum of the Great Lakes
Im so glad they didnt get the Bass Pro Shop, I thought it got waaay too many incentives for a company with upwards 82 locations in the country. It dosnt seem to be that special anymore, it wouldve been nice on the riverfront but not for as many incentives that was offered.

Is Over-the-Rhine As Bad As They Say?
I know Im late but that was a hell of a Toledo vs. Cincy segregation debate last year..My thoughts on the issue.. Looking at this as objectively as I can. I think one could come to the conclusion that although Toledo dosent have many super high income blacks, the trade off is having less concentrated poverty (i.e. ghettos, crime, etc). For example I live in a neighborhood thats very diverse but its predominatly black and there are several middle class blacks who live with working class backs because the burbs as they are has no diversity, longer commutes, and some like myself realize by leaving the city you concentrate poverty hurting the neighborhood and ultimatley the city. IMHO Toledo has no real "ghettos" compared to some of the cities Ive been to, which is in line with the city's low crime rate. But dont get me wrong id still probably take Cincy over this place.

Cleveland Public Schools: News and Discussion
Im quite envious of Cleveland because they picked quite possibly one of the best superintendents in the nation in Dr. Sanders. He has helped Toledo schools out perform every urban district in Ohio. I wish the new school board members here (who by the way has an agenda) didnt run him away, but thats politics. I wish him good luck in Cleveland...From what I hear about the districts performance there, hes going to need it.

University of Toledo
Im not totally sure but MUO recently raised tuition, more likey to address this issue. UT has always been in financial problems and annually raises their tuiton with no restraint. Im amazed at how fast all this went down, it went from "were thinking about it project " to Taft signing the bill in just a matter of months.

UT back in top 100 among U.S. law schools Program ties for 93rd in magazine ratings By IGNAZIO MESSINA BLADE STAFF WRITER The University of Toledo's college of law has regained a spot among the top 100 law schools in the country, according to the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings. The magazine placed UT tied for 93rd with Seattle University, University of Hawaii, and University of San Francisco. Beth Eisler, interim dean of the UT law school, said it was the highest the law school has ever been placed in the news magazine's rankings. In April, 2004, the UT law school moved into the second tier of law schools in a five-way tie for 94th out of the nation's 177 law schools. It slipped down last year back in the third of four tiers to an unknown spot in that category. The magazine provides numeric rankings for only the top 100 accredited law schools that make up the top two tiers. More at http://www.toledoblade.com

What are the must-see/must-do things for visitors to Ohio?
Nobody rep Toledo yet.. -For some reason people are fasinated by the Tony Packos resturant, and like to see the cerlebrity memorbilla (autographed hotdog buns :?)..The food is good, but overated at the same time...at least to me. -Jim Jacksons Bar & Grill has talented Jazz artists some from the Chicago/Detroit area who performs live music. Good place to relax. -Most here already know about Zoo, Art Muesem, Mud Hens etc. -Maumee Bay Brewing Co., The Docks, all the glass stores. -The Glass Pavillion is supposably going to be an international attraction when it opens in a couple of months. -COSI (only if you havent been to Columbus, otherwise its a joke) -Since Cedar Point is so close Ill throw that in to. -A few people I know who came back to Toledo recently were impressed by the Glass City Skyway (construction), its gotten so popular they are now giving tours of the construction. So I would recommend this too.

As long as we're discussing projects that won't be finished until 2030, I'd add Toledo's Marina District too. The Marina Districts going to kick ass. I didnt mention this because it hasnt broke ground yet. Although it's supposably going to break ground this year. In fact the developer has just 2 days to present the first major anchor. That should be interesting. I'd say Toledo's Tech Corridor tops everything in the state. As much as I hate to say this, it is Toledo's last chance at an economic recovery. Although tech is important in for Toledo's future, I wouldn't say its the last chance. Toledo has the benefit of being one of the top transportation hubs in the country. I for the life of me can't figure out why the city hasnt aggressively marketed this.I read just today the BAX Global is not only thinking about expanding here but is aggressively marketing Toledo as a place to do business to other companies in national biz mags. Im very confident Toledo can snatch up alot of transportation companies to relocate their HQ's here. Here is an interesting article about this.V http://www.toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060329/BUSINESS03/603290322 Future developments will include a passenger rail system connecting the UT and MUO campuses, a West Side research corridor, and downtown. After that's complete, UT is REALLY going big. Bowling Green has been very cooperative with UT and will be the southern anchor of the Toledo Tech Corridor. The passenger rail lines will extend to their fair city 20 miles south of Toledo, and include their college campus. But, it won't end there. The northern anchor is to be Ann Arbor, Michigan. UT, U of M, and BG will comprise one of the largest research meccas on earth, and the sense of regionalism taking hold at these universities is astounding (and Detroit won't be included). New businesses will spring up from all the new research dollars coming into the area, and hopefully it will be enough to offset Toledo's losses elsewhere. Jeez, I didnt know it was of this magnitude, hell I just thought it was another buliding that would be built. I probably wont be around in Toledo to see this through to the end (unless I got a kick ass job in economic development here)but if this happens it would be really impressive. Toledo would be a real city. :-D BTW UT Prez Dan Johnson will oversee the tech corridor now, not that guy in that article.

Job growth in the south and why is Ohio far behind?
^ Thats why Mississippi is the poorest state in the Union...The point is non-citizens unfairly boost certain economies.

Job growth in the south and why is Ohio far behind?
Companies move to areas of substantial population growth. Its not the prime reason but it's factored in when a company looks to locate somewhere.I believe the lack of population growth in Ohio along with the mis-management from our Governor is a key reason for our dismal economy. A major reason for population growth in the south and west is not mainly because of warm weather (if that was the case why was the north so populated all these years) but more because texas, arizona, nevada, florida, georgia (i.e.the fastest growing states) count non-citizens in the census. Ohio doesnt live near the border to pick up that growth which is why we are stagnant. Another thing to think about is that the cheap labor makes businesses in the south more profitable because the easy access to cheap mexican labor brings down thier fixed cost. Its not rocket science, I go down to Texas every year to see family and Ive been studying these things. Ohio needs to make a national powerplay because all things being equal, they will always have the advantage. This is why Im a stanch supporter of that Immigration Amendment in the Ohio House, and I urge everyone here to support it. It will shift the balance of power back to the Midwest by not counting non-citizens in the census (which doesnt make sense anyway).

Miscellaneous Ohio Political News
More political ads means more money for Ohio businesses Since Ohio is a premere swing state it would be nice if we had a viable candidate for President in 08'. If he got the backing of his own state he would be sure to win thereby bringing all the pork to Ohio...Look what Bush and Delay did with Texas, I vacationed in Houston and Dallas late last year and those cities look amazing they also have great economy. Coincidence, I think not!

University of Toledo
Im glad that they are thinking about the "branch campus" thing because people who made mistakes in high school and dont have stellar grades at least can attempt to go through the branch campus and get a 2 year degree with a chance for a 4 year (Im assuming thats how it works). People always slamed U of Toledo for being open enrollment but the truth is most of the unqualified students failed out thier freshman year anyway.I dont think it took too much away from the learning experience. UT has a staggering dropout rate for first year students, especially minorites (over 50%). But dont get me wrong, Im VERY glad they will become more selective especially since Im already in the professional school that will dramatically raise it's standards. Because of my partying ways my first two years in college I doubt I would have got into the upper division with the new requirements. :-D
