  1. I read something to the extent that UT law wants to move into the current courthouse a few days ago. This would mean a new one must be built, but I havent heard a thing about it till I read this. From what you posted it seems like two new buildings would be built..That would be nice. But with how things work in Toledo, I see it competed in ohhhhhh....2053, if at all.
  2. Construction season has started and I want to know what are the major big time projects going on in the Buckeye that I should look out for. When I say big projects I mean things that will become a signature part of Ohio (i.e. buildings, bridges, muesems, etc) and has started or will start this season. Post pictures if possible..

More sobering news Ohio growth remains flat over 5 years Most areas lose more residents than they attract, census reports. Medina only local bright spot By David KnoxBeacon Journal staff writer More than half of Ohio's counties saw more residents pack up and leave than newcomers arrive during the last five years. In eight counties, more people died than were born, while births outstripped deaths by fewer than 1,000 in 46 more counties. These are some of the sobering statistics found in the latest population estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau. www.ohio.com
  4. Last time I was at Westfield (not Franklin Park) it still looked like the "happenin" place to be.The problem with Westfield is kinda what C-dawg was touchin on; people in that Toledo arent sophisticated enough to shop at most of the new stores, which isnt exactly a bad thing. They just need to get more urban/down-to-earth themed stores. I dont think I have been in a single store in any of the new stores in the expansion, except the new theatre. What the hell ever happened to a good ol fashsioned arcade in the mall, are they that unprofitable?
  5. "Despite rising vacancies, some landlords said they are having little trouble filling space." :? This statement seems contradictory to me. Its hard to say where the real esate market is going. The success or unsuccess of Southwyck and Westgate are two important developments that will tell me for sure where this market stands. Toledo is at a fork in the road; either there its about to be a surge in development or these vacancies are going to spiral out of control. This seems to be no differnet than other great lake cities. I wish there was a way to ban urban sprawl b/c these business just continue to move out of the city to the disconnected burbs where the money is. The city is at a disadvantage from the start, we have to give large ass tax breaks for businesses who as far as we know dont even want to be here. The whole system is broken really.
  6. Do noncitizens cheat Ohio? Local congressmen sign on for amendment to change Census BY MALIA RULON | www.ENQUIRER.com WASHINGTON BUREAU WASHINGTON - A growing number of Ohio lawmakers are questioning whether illegal immigrants - and other noncitizens - should be included in the census count that's used to determine congressional representation. Right now, the U.S. Census counts every person every decade, meaning that noncitizens - including those who have entered the country illegally - are routinely counted along with U.S. citizens. Among other things, those numbers are used to determine how many members of Congress each state gets - and how many votes each state has in the Electoral College, which chooses the president. "It's as if in some states, the ballot box gets stuffed and nobody has discovered it yet," said Rep. Mike Turner, a Republican who represents the Dayton area and northern Warren County and chairs the House Government Affairs' subcommittee on federalism and the census. Your thoughts?
  7. bizbiz I havent written any "viable economic studies" but this article is dealing with cities not metro's. If you want to publish an article on metros do it, but it has nothing to do with the study. Secondly you cant penalize Columbus for annexing, I personally think that one of the smartest moves a city could make. Cleveland/Cincy couldve/shouldve done the same. In other words...Dont Hate..
  8. yes!! I actually had a really weird dream the other night that Toledo's economy did recover and there was a constrcution boom downtown. I was like 30 years old and visiting home from Toronto. Toledo had already tore down the Hen House for some reason and were building a new baseball stadium on the East Side. All sorts of towers were going up in downtown and Toledo was fully recovered. I talked to people from Phoenix and Tampa who were moving back north because the water ran out. The city made a law however that no skyscraper could be taller than One Seagate! The new construction was mainly 300-foot residential towers made of glass with pyramid roofs. People in the metro finally woke up and realized Sylvania and Perrysburg sucked ass, and all started moving downtown again. It was really messed up, especially considering it was only 10 years from now. :-o :weird:
  9. If Toledo's economy ever gets going again and it started to build skyscrapers it would be nice to see them all made of glass like the OI building or at least modified versions of it. I always thought a city consisting of totally glass buildings would be cool and would create one hell of a skyline. It would be particularly special if the "glass city" did it.

Hmmm so it mustve been money problems. I remember he was braggin all about how he owns the Cavs and how hes the only artist who manages his money well but now he's been on the down low (no pun intended) for the past few months now. No music videos, appearances, nothin..strange.

"This is not a plantation," Collins said. "We are not owned by everybody else. Black folks aren't owned by white folks any more." wtf! :-D This collins women is trippin.
  12. I heard it today on WSPD, looks as if the media is keepin it on the low till next week. I figure this plant will give Toledo 15 to 20 years of stable manufacturing employment and enough time to start trying to diversify the economy before GM tanks (although I hope that dosent happen). It would be nice if the new facility brings in new suppliers.
  13. Article published Tuesday, February 21, 2006 GM to announce plans to invest $504M in Toledo Powertrain :banger: BLADE STAFF General Motors is expected to announce next week that it will invest $504 million in its Toledo Powertrain Plant to make build six-speed transmissions, sources told The Blade. The factory on Alexis Road, which will add space to handle the extra work, was in competition with a Michigan plant and Mexico for the project. The six-speed transmissions, which provide better performance and fuel economy than four-speeds, are considered a key to the future of GM's vehicle line-up. The company plans to make as many as 1 million six-speed transmissions each year by 2007 and as many as 3 million a year by 2010. The North Toledo plant employs 3,450 making four-speed transmissions primarily for pickup trucks and sport-utility vehicles. MORE: http://www.toledoblade.com

Just got done watching the Detroit news station. I cant believe that city council is basically giving up on thier zoo. Apparently the layoff notices went out today. http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060220/NEWS11/60220012 On the bright side this is great for Ohio b/c the Toledo Zoo is about to get an expansion pending if the levies pass. Although I feel sorry for Detroit because the zoo is a great educational tool for childern and great for families. Detroit is starting to lose alot of family entertainment with thier concententration on casinos, adult clubs and all.
  15. I was thinking about this not to long ago, but I came to my own conclusion that it may not make much sense to have a hospital in the heart of downtown because it would be much harder for emergency vehicles to get through downtown traffic. I could see a college moving downtown, there was a lot of talk of moving the law school to downtown Toledo but a hospital downtown doesnt seem to make much sense to me.

So does anyone else from the Cleveland area know what the latest is with Usher? I can't find nothing else on the net about it.
  17. I remeber seeing that book on a local news station, I thought it would include stuff about weird Ohio laws or sumthin didnt know it was based on "ghost stories".

@ C-Dawg Njaim Hip-hop definatly goes across all cultural backgrounds now but I think Ohio is late in riding the wave. I dont feel whites in Ohio have embraced it to the point of becoming artist like more multicultural cities (i.e. LA, Detriot, ATL, NY, HOU) and we dont have that many hispanics. That's why I made my assumption. I used to know everything about hip-hop mainstream and underground from release dates, beefs, lyrics, etc. Now I barely tell somebody whose even popular. Now I listen to more artist like Common, Talib Kweli, The Roots, etc. Ludacris is probably the only really mainstrem hip-hop artist that I would listen to now.

Ohio's underground hip-hop scene is weak. No offense to Columbus but hip-hop is not one of thier specialties. At least Bow-wow represents though. Ohio needs more mainstream people, I dont listen too much underground (hence the name underground) but sometimes hear some good demos. Cleveland HAD a good rap scene...in the 90's, Bone thugs was probably the biggest thing to come out of there. I would assume Cleveland or Cincy to have the best underground hip-hop scene in Ohio by default simply because the have the most black people which equates to more acts. But I dont know any mainstream artist that rep those cities. I was glad to see Lyfe rep Toledo on the Jimmy Kimmel Show once, and someone stated Legend rep Springfield. Outside of Bow wow these are the only two I see rep thier cities. Here's some in Toledo's underground scene, you can google audio and listen to some. 44 Blockwatchas (S.J.) EDIT
  21. Heh...East Toledoans have a serious inferiority complex. They are the only ones who speak as if they dont belong to Toledo (i.e. "we own the river/real estate".) They dont realize nobody really cares. I just wanna see the shovels hit the ground ASAP, hell almost anywhere is fine with me. Ideally I would like to see the old arena torn down for an expanded Marina Distict in the near future. Maybe even just have it connect with international park and "the Docks" so it could be just one huge entertainment district. I'll be pissed if they go the rehabiltation route with the old arena. Toledo needs to start going the high quality route instead of doing things half-assed.
  22. ^ Ugh this is what I hated about Atlanta, I was hoping Columbus would be the alternative because Atlanta is a bonified fashion show. Although I didnt get this feeling about Columbus when I was there, but I wasnt there long either. @edale Its probably numbers because Cincy, Cleveland and Dayton has the highest black population percentage wise. I was actually surprised at how many black people were in Dayton though, I visited there looong time ago and alway figured it was just a hick city, but the census today says the black population is 43%!? They must've been hiding from me or something. But dont let population fool you, I've learned living in a majority black city (Cleveland) was overrated b/c for every one race consious person you'll find 3 of the opposite. Another thing I didnt like about Cleveland was the thug mentality, even amongst the older people (although some people like that). I prefer quality over quantity, Iv'e actually have never been to Cincy but I do hear there are alot of quality blacks making a difference. Ive been wanting to get down there to see that Underground Railroad Muesem. You may already be in the right place.
  23. Even though I like Cleveland more than Detroit in every way, I will admit that Detroit has a bit more name recognition than Cleveland. Even while surfing alot of these urban sites Detroit is mentioned alot more than Cleveland on a National and International basis. After this Super Bowl thier name regonition will probably get even better, the city has a rich and famous history that will be hard to snuff out. What Cleveland needs is a good gimmick, if they going to be the "Rock n Roll" city they need to focus on that an build the city around that gimmick.
  24. Well Im black and from Toledo so here goes: Politically blacks here are unified, like Columbus we had a Black mayor, City Council, Superientent, Fire Chief etc but just recently the newly elected Mayor's political machine just about pushed them all out of power. Something like 68% of the people he fired in City Hall was African American (we're only 26% of the pop.). As for annual events there is the "MLK unity celebration" which usually gets bigger every year and the "African-American Festival". The Black Chamber of Commerce was recognized by the White House as the best in the country a few years back.Under former Mayor Ford (first black mayor) we had one of the most aggressive affirmative action programs in the state which required a large % of govt contracts to go to minority owned business for development (not subcontracting) but the actual development. Unfortunatley once the new Mayor came in he quickly dismatled it. There are problems with "black gangs" (as the neo-nazis called it) in North Toledo which needs to be dealt with. The city seems to be neglecting the area for the most part. I think being "unified" is all in the eyes of the beholder but I will say the most thriving city for blacks in Ohio is the Columbus area. Not only did BET rate it as the best place, but blackenterprise.com rated it as the best city for blacks to live in outside the south. Ive been there and the city & people were nice, I may move there in the future. But I need a clearer definition on what you mean by "unified".
