  1. Totally agree with everything you said. The changes over the last 20 years are already crazy. But, the national recognition is finally getting here and I don't think that was true over the last 20 years. In the past, if you went around the country and told people that Columbus was cool, I think many people barely were aware of the city and others would laugh at the idea of a city in Ohio being upcoming. But, Columbus is finally a city that people have heard is a cool, fast-growing, upcoming city. And, that kind of recognition is when cities like Austin and Denver finally started to really blow up. I was just in Mexico City in February and met two guys that were living there but were from California. I told them I was from Ohio and they asked, "Columbus, right? We hear that's the place to be if you're in Ohio." Compound the fact that we were already gaining recognition with the recent huge announcements like Intel, and this momentum is going to build up.
  2. I think our drastic transformation is still ahead of us. I bet this will be our comparison from 2020 - 2040.
  3. So, I saw this comparison of downtown Denver from 2000 to 2019 on r/cityporn on Reddit and I thought it was interesting when thinking about the trajectory that Columbus is on. In that time, the Denver metro went from a metro of around 2 million to one near 3 million. I think that's about what we can expect in the Columbus metro over the next 20 years. It will be interesting to see the Columbus downtown comparison after that time.
  4. The most striking thing about this image is the Starbucks in this Kroger. A bit different from how I remember this Kroger.
  5. They host a ton of EDM shows in the evenings. I've been to several shows there and they are always a good time and packed. The whole facility is open during the shows. So, you can walk around, drinking and just listening to the music. I think I would be bored just walking around normally, but watching DJ sets there is amazing. I wouldn't be surprised if that's where they are making most of their money. They also purchased another large section of the abandoned mall and are adding a huge expansion.
  6. The obesity epidemic is getting out of control.
  7. So, we agree? It's not state politics that drive growth or loss. There are other more important factors.
  8. You can find all kinds of examples of the Texas state government embattled against city politics. In the Lone Star State, Cities Feel the Heat Observers are bracing for an extra push against the big four metro areas – Austin, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio -- far beyond the "Austin bashing" that's prevailed for decades. The current political climate has pitted the state against its urban areas as some national groups stir up the divide. Momentum is building for this approaching session to be the ultimate showdown between Texas cities and the state. https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/articles/2018-12-27/cities-versus-state-a-battle-for-control-in-the-texas-legislature
  9. It's wild living in Columbus, where we see nothing but growth all around, with only signs of it continuing to speed up, and then going online and seeing this doom talk about Ohio all the time. Based on comments you see online, you would assume that Ohio is already a desolate wasteland. It feels like we're on a different planet in Central Ohio sometimes. The state politics aren't preventing people from moving to Columbus. So, maybe other areas of Ohio actually have different problems?
  10. I think your wife is going to win this one unless things really pick up in the second half. 17 seems high to me, but hopefully I'm wrong.
  11. I'm worried that this will end up looking as bad as that moving wall on the convention center parking garage. It just seems possible based on renderings.
  12. What are the implications of this? It seemed odd last year when that estimate came out. It seems even more odd that they lowered it even more.
  13. What kind of hotels are you normally going to? lol
  14. That happens, though. And then the building falls even more into disrepair until the city condemns it and demolishes it anyway. I'd rather the land just be developed sooner rather than playing this game for years on building that nobody wants to save. Not everything is special just because it's old.
  15. I get what you’re saying, but as people that live in the city, it is our right to question why a developer Questioning a developer and flat out saying "these buildings shouldn't be demolished" without any info are two very different things and @cbussoccer was speaking to the latter.
  16. I would argue that getting Intel was a good way to bring people into the state.
  17. Yea, it sounds like it was terrifying. Her dad experienced the 1985 one during college, which I imagine was an even more terrifying experience. Were you living there at the time in 2017?
  18. Yea, her experience with the Mexico City earthquake in 2017 is why her reaction to disaster warnings is a bit more elevated than ours.
  19. My girlfriend is from Mexico City and yesterday she told me that the first time she experienced a tornado warning in Ohio, she was panicking thinking she need to rush to shelter immediately. She couldn't understand why nobody else seemed to be panicking. I was showing her "midwesterners during tornadoes" memes yesterday.
  20. I love the fact that tornado sirens were wailing and @CbusOrBustwas still driving around to get construction pictures. True dedication.
  21. It's like that Bat Signal for @CbusOrBust. Some people hear "WOOOOOOOO WOOOOOOO WOOOOOOO" but @CbusOrBust hears "EEEEEEEEEE RRREEEEEEECCC TIOOOOOOONNN" and knows it's time to deliver the next crane erection photo to UO. Not the hero we deserve, but the hero we need.
  22. They have to survive the next three years for that benefit, though. And, as much as we love to joke, the temporary construction absolutely will deter some people from going to the market.
  23. Well, hopefully they get to 10 fabs so we can have OH10
  24. Guys, guys. It's ok. It can be 15 stories because it's set back behind one small building. The shadows of doom that it would have cast over High Street will now be held at bay.
