Cleveland: East Side Neighborhood Development
Uhh, this is interesting! (Article is paywalled unfortunately) Calling @KJP!!! https://www.cleveland.com/news/2025/04/vacant-former-police-hq-land-in-cleveland-could-soon-see-new-life.html Vacant former police HQ land in Cleveland could soon see new life Still early in the process, but an "unnamed developer" is interested in the land. A land swap would occur between the city, land bank, and them.

Brook Park: New Cleveland Browns Stadium
Not giving the state the benefit of the doubt here, but there's a chance HSG literally did not tell them or show them there was a viable Plan B option they would pursue without $600mil until now (like the rest of us, going: "where are the renderings?!"). Before, it was just "we are not planning on renovating, we've done the research and it makes no financial sense" P.R. bs. Will this new info change lawmaker's minds? Who knows at this point

Cleveland: Innerbelt News
Hey mods, any chance we can rename this thread to "Cleveland: Innerbelt News" to match Columbus thread naming convention? Thx! Since Innerbelt stuff is coming up in other threads again, I figured I'd dump a little refresher/update for anyone who's interested and get this thread more front of mind. More pertinent info in the second half of this post. For anyone not in the know, here's a little breakdown on the entire scope of the plan: Cleveland Innerbelt Project is a 7-phase construction project that began in 2011 with the reconstruction of the I-90 Innerbelt Bridge. Here are all of the "Contract Groups (CG)"-the ones in green are complete, yellow are about to begin construction, orange are currently in planning/funding/consulting stage: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ CG1 - Westbound Bridge Construct a new westbound I-90 bridge and associated improvements. CG2 - Eastbound Bridge Demolish the 1959 Innerbelt Bridge and construct a new eastbound I-90 bridge and associated improvements. CG3 - Central Interchange A - Improve I-90 east and westbound in the Central Interchange area between East 9th St and Carnegie Avenue and replace the East 22nd St and Carnegie Avenue bridges over I-90. B - Reconstruction of I-77 approach to the Central Interchange (I-90). Includes mainline bridge and pavement replacements. CG4 - Innerbelt Curve A - Relocate the Easterly Interceptor Sewer for the relocation of the Innerbelt Curve. B - Build a new overhead CSX Railroad bridge at a new location to accommodate the realignment of the Innerbelt Curve. This structure will replace the existing structure. C - Build a new overhead Norfolk Southern Railroad bridge at a new location to accommodate the realignment of the Innerbelt Curve. This structure will replace the existing structure. D - Reconstruction of four (4) overhead bridge structures near the Innerbelt Curve: Superior Avenue, St. Clair Avenue, Hamilton Avenue, and Lakeside Avenue. Work will include replacing existing structures with longer spans to accommodate future widening. Work includes the East 30th St extension. E - Relocation of the Innerbelt Curve. F - Replace the non-inventoried CSX Railroad Bridge over East 55th St located just south of IR-90 in order to accommodate the widening of East 55th Street, including bike lanes. This project will remain dormant until PID 77413 (CG4E) is identified for funding. CG5 - Innerbelt Trench A - Reconstruction of four (4) overhead arterial roadway bridges along the Innerbelt from Prospect Ave to Payne Ave in Cleveland: Prospect, Euclid, Chester, Payne. Work will include replacing the existing structures with longer spans to accommodate future roadway work. B - Reconstruction of the Eastbound Innerbelt from East 22nd St to Superior Ave. C - Reconstruction of the Westbound Innerbelt from East 22nd St to Superior Ave. CG6 - I-77 Bridge Over I-490 A - Widen the I-77 bridge over I-490 and improve I-77 south of I-490. B - Reconstruct Broadway Ave over I-77; and move the Broadway entrance ramp (to I-77 south) to Pershing Ave via a new frontage road on the west side of I-77. CG7 - I-71 Improvements A - Improve I-71 south between I-490 and the SR-176 south exit. The project will include a deceleration lane for southbound traffic exiting to SR-176 south. The project will also improve the I-90 east/I-490 west entrance ramp to SR-176 south. B - Improve I-71 between approximately West 25th St and I-490 including roadway pavement and replacement of I-71 bridge decks. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Here is a map showing the entire Innerbelt in detail, every demolition and construction as part of the full plan (while it is dated 2015, it is still accurate): https://www.dot.state.oh.us/projects/ClevelandUrbanCoreProjects/Innerbelt/Documents/2015-12-03 ODOT's ELLIS Project Identification (PID) page is a great way to see progress on specific job numbers. For example, the job number for CG3A (beginning soon) is 83282. Put in the district number (Cuyahoga = 12), PID number, and then click on the "Milestones" to see where any project is in the planning/construction phase: https://ellisproj.dot.state.oh.us/ Since the Central Interchange CG3A is beginning soon, you can see where they are in the pre-construction phase at the moment and the various deadlines for items (yes/no = complete/incomplete): Stage 3 (final) plans were submitted August 3rd, 2024. Right-of-way acquisition will occur in June this year, bidding/sale of the project end of this year, and construction will begin a year from now next April. The cool thing you can see too is PIDs for projects that must occur before other work happens. For example, 121893 is the project to demolish the old Juvenile Court building and you can follow the link to see the timeline for that project too: Old Juvi Court demolition will be bid/sold this month (April) and demolition will begin June 15 of this year, wrapping up this October. Total cost of demolition is $175k. This timeline then permits the Central Interchange project to kick off in 2026. Hope this is helpful!

Cleveland: Festivals, Music Concerts, & Events
https://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/2025/03/lost-found-in-cleveland-sets-ciff-attendance-record.html ‘Lost & Found in Cleveland’ sets CIFF attendance record The independent dramedy drew nearly 2,500 people to its Midwest premiere at the Cleveland International Film Festival on Sunday. That set a record for the largest single screening in CIFF history and also marked the largest audience for a film at Playhouse Square since the Playhouse Square Foundation was founded in 1973. “We’re trying to change the narrative nationally in theaters with audiences so that they see Cleveland in a different light than what they’ve been fed,” Gerchak added. “But it’s also an opportunity for us to have Clevelanders see themselves.” Sunday’s nearly sold-out screening was the only opportunity to see “Lost & Found in Cleveland” at CIFF49. But at a post-screening Q&A, the filmmakers hinted at wider distribution of the film coming soon.

Cleveland: Downtown: Sherwin-Williams Headquarters
^That, and most of our skyscrapers are actually pretty wide for their heights - if they were all more slim and condensed, it would look a lot taller than it is. That's one reason looking at SW and Key Tower when driving north on I-90 (Innerbelt bridge) is one of the tallest looking views, because you're seeing the thin side of all their profiles.

For real! We already have a lot of historical skyscrapers compared to other cities - we need more modern skyscrapers to portray a modern city to the rest of the world lol

Cleveland: Random Development and News
https://www.cleveland.com/community/2025/03/cuyahoga-county-backing-live-music-with-formation-of-task-force-press-run.html Good summary article of recent developments around eastside CLE from Cleveland.com - figured I'd just throw them in the random dev chat: JCU enrollment continues to increase JCU received nearly 5,000 applications from across the country and became more selective this year, admitting about 3,600 students from 40 states. Accepted students have until May 1 to confirm their enrollment. This momentum follows JCU welcoming its largest incoming class in five years in 2024. Philanthropic support at JCU has also reached new heights, with donors contributing $24.7 million this year, up dramatically from $14.9 million last year. (Not mentioned in article, but the new JCU fieldhouse construction is progressing nicely, and all things according to plan, Gateway North on the circle should begin construction this May) NOACA community meeting coming up: The Northeast Ohio Area Coordinating Agency (NOACA) -- Greater Cleveland’s transportation and environmental planning agency -- will be holding an open house for Cleveland Heights residents to provide information about projects planned for the next few years. Residents are encouraged to attend and give feedback. The meeting will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. April 4 at the Lee Road Library branch, 2345 Lee Road. Registration is not required. Lee Rd Action Plan update: Engineering has begun for the Lee Road Complete Street Improvements project in Shaker Heights. City leadership and staff are involved with the design to ensure it fulfills the Plan’s vision. In February, the city, county, and the county’s engineering team (Chagrin Valley Engineering and SmithGroup) began with a walk of Lee Road, discussing the existing conditions and planned improvements. Later this spring, the city will invite residents, businesses, and the broader Shaker community to review preliminary plans and provide ideas as design begins on a three-lane roadway, bike infrastructure, and targeted streetscape improvements. Construction is planned for 2027. Arcadia Van Aken Construction is getting underway on Arcadia, a new mixed-use development at 3393 Warrensville Center Road. Expected to be completed at the end of 2026 Other various non-development things in article

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
https://www.cleveland.com/news/2025/03/cleveland-homicides-down-48-in-first-quarter-of-this-year-compared-to-2024.html Cleveland homicides down 48% in first quarter of this year compared to 2024 Very impressive news. Glad to see the city continues to become safer year-over-year, despite what many like to falsely promote. YTD 2023: 36, YTD 2024: 29, YTD 2025: 15 This year’s total is a 48% decrease from the same time last year In Cleveland, police have targeted neighborhoods where the most violence takes place, joined forces with state and federal law enforcement partners and used technology to help officers track offenders. Currently, city officials are putting together a safety plan to keep violent crime down. Details about the plan have not been introduced. For years, the department has solved more than 70% of the homicides in the city, a rate that exceeds the national rate of about 60%. Council President Blaine Griffin called the city’s rate impressive.

https://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/2025/03/jazz-returns-to-nighttown-space-with-edwins-while-original-bookers-head-to-ohio-city.html Jazz returns to Nighttown space with Edwins, while original bookers head to Ohio City TL;DR “We have plans to have live jazz throughout the month, along with a monthly marquee headliner,” Chrostowski told Cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer in a recent interview. Local talent has been and will remain the “major component” to this new weekend schedule of events. Across town at Market Garden Brewery in the Ohio City neighborhood, Wadsworth and JWP are also bringing in A-list talent – the kind that they would have normally landed at Nighttown. “That’s just not what we are about and we had established a much different tradition. There’s no ill will and I’m glad to see the Nighttown space alive again – I live right nearby – and we are always glad to see more musicians working. The more the better,” he added. “But the truth is, we were just moving in different directions.”

Gotta post this here because the NASA thread is still locked for some reason... https://www.crainscleveland.com/politics-policy/proposed-nasa-hq-move-ohio-backed-mayors Bibb, Ronayne and Team NEO make latest push for NASA HQ in Cleveland Not much crazy new information, but the main takeaway is everyone in NEO is coming together with one coordinated voice. Quite amazing to see really Letter co-signed by Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb, Cuyahoga County Exec. Chris Ronayne and Team NEO CEO Matt Dolan Over 80 other Northeast Ohio mayors, including Kahlil Seren (Cleveland Heights), Meghan George (Lakewood), and Shammas Malik (Akron), join the trio in backing the message, which was written under the Team NEO heading. Additionally, dozens of other local officials, including Michael Deemer (President and CEO of Downtown Cleveland, Inc.), Steve Millard (President and CEO of the Greater Akron Chamber) and eight members of the Cuyahoga County Council joined the letter. This new letter touts the region's "thriving aerospace ecosystem" — "over 170 NASA suppliers and is the largest supplier to both Boeing and Airbus" — as well as the location, workforce and existing facilities.

How exactly are the numbers bad again (genuine question)? Looking at the back data, the labor force, employment and unemployment (slightly) are all up since last January. Unless you're talking about something else... Everything is climbing up since the pandemic (unemployment generally stable/decreasing) and there are ebbs and flows each year which is typical. Labor force and employment are both higher than 2015 (over the decade of data).
