  1. Growing up, Mt. Pleasant/Lee-Harvard were nice. I have not been to the eastside neighborhoods since the 90s. Since leaving in '89, most of my visits to Cleveland have been to downtown and the UC area. Google Earth views however show the eastside devastation. It makes me very sad because I love my hometown. This is why I advocate for more affordable housing because people don't want to live in squalor and despair, but without quality education and/or at least a living wage, they can't escape that environment.
  2. As an African-American who was born and raised on the eastside (late-50s to mid-70s) but has also lived on the westside in Lakewood (late 80s), Cleveland has always been pretty segregated. The eastside attraction as a brief returning adult was focused on work at CCF, the UC cultural attractions and downtown. By the late 80s, the Eastside neighborhoods were in decline. No one, regardless of race, wants to live in a deteriorating neighborhood but many lack the financial means to escape.
  3. ^ A building to rival 200 PS would be just lovely! I'll take it! While only the third tallest, 200 PS's skyline presence is and has always been bold and demonstrative; even after Key Tower was built.
  4. I had mentioned upthread that these reflective glass towers have a tendency to do that, especially when a city suffers from dark, cloudy, gloomy days. Bring 'em on!
  5. ^ Absolutely! Big difference from the Hough that has existed in this area since the 60s.
  6. Let's not have this thread shut down, please.
  7. Wasn't the Hilton downtown $272M?
  8. That part of Prospect has been so dreary and ugly for so long, they may actually liven and brighten the streetscape. As long as they have someone regularly cleaning, and I assume they will, they should be ok.
  9. Welcome back! Your contributions have been missed. I know everyone is trying to make the best of the situation and I certainly dont want to spoil that, but I am simply not impressed with the new design, the height, the so-called density or the location of it. A simple nondescript office building could be built anywhere in the CBD; not right across the street from RMFH, home of the 2016 NBA world champion Cleveland Cavaliers.
  10. ....or at least a stainless steel globe/can sculpture in front of the building, facing PS.
  11. ...and to our socially-distanced gathering on the Jacobs-Weston lots this Summer to celebrate the occasion!
  12. Their last press release in response to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic: "The Company has not yet named a design architect and no design renderings are available. The project timetable remains unchanged. Any transition to the new facilities is not expected to occur until 2023 at the earliest. We will communicate any substantial project updates to you when we have them.”
  13. I would hope that SW is a bit more dramatic or iconic with a new PS address. Anything too simple will seem out of place in the midst of the Tower City Center, May Company Residences, Key Tower/Society for Savings Bldg., Old Stone Church, PS North and 200 PS.
  14. Exactly! The area was full of these and very densely populated. It's so sad to see the vacant lots that are now in that area.
  15. ^ What is the purpose of those? I've seen them pounded into the ground in so many developments but they appear to be temporary and not part of the final structures. Do they provide some kind of stability for the site?
  16. Always great photos Paul in Cleveland!
  17. ...ahh Swingo's. Another long-gone Cleveland fixture. https://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/2015/08/cleveland_swingos_hotel_where.html
  18. As long as the Fed's current "Socialism" continues to support "American Capitalism." How ironic?
  19. It's getting there. I hope that going forward, routine cleaning becomes part of normal maintenance to prevent these from returning to their previous condition.
  20. "I have to admit that PPG Place in Pittsburgh did come to mind - though I know some on this forum really dislike that complex." I doubt that SW, for several reasons, would want to imitate the gothic PPG Place monstrosity in Pittsburgh; even if it does pay a nod to Cleveland's past.
  21. That cornice all lit up at night will be lit!
  22. There in lies the problem. As long as CLE is city owned and operated, it will never realize it's full potential of becoming a regional economic engine vs a short-term income stream. The city is too focused on short-term income versus long-term regional investment and development. United is very vulnerable right now and I have little sympathy after being de-hubbed, not once, but twice by them. It's a shame but CLE's value is being underappreciated similar to the way in which Westside Market has been squandered as an economic engine and community resource. You look at SEA and Pike Place Market and you can see what could have been and what could be. A tale of two cities; one successful, one not so much!
  23. Wasn't Stouffers Top of the Town located there? Did they get rid of all of their restaurants; John Qs, Pier W, Top of the Town?
  24. There's a program called "Webex."
