Cleveland: Downtown: Sherwin-Williams Headquarters
The County and their campaign contributors should take a backseat, cool their jets and purchase some parkas. I doubt that the citizenry would tolerate a screwup of that magnitude.

Cleveland: Downtown: Sherwin-Williams Headquarters
Unfortunately this is the kind of anti-business mentality that results in corporations departing for greener pastures. Jacob's has been vacant for decades; the Weston lots for almost as long. Now all of a sudden, when SW expresses an interest in both parcels, Cuyahoga County wants to build a jail on them. Really? "Now, one would hope that county officials are more aware of the big picture than that...one would hope."

Do you mean ala Riker's Island? If so, they could use one of the vacant areas in the flats.

See, herein lies a big part of the region's problem. Why should SW have to battle Cuyahoga County or the City of Cleveland over the location for their new HQ? Let the County build on the existing JC site or any of the other surface lots scattered across downtown or the near eastside.

Cleveland's past is what has made and continues to make it great today. While there have been heartbreaks and setbacks, as in any city, the treasures it has developed and rich history for a city of its size are tremendous. Don't lose sight of the past because it can help guide the present and the future.

Is this one of the "on hold" or "go slow" projects?

One cannot overlook the relative ease of hopping off of your plane at CLE and onto the Red Line to Tower City, your hotel and your HQ offices; even with two connecting flights. There's something about the last leg of your trip that can make the difference.

Ok, I'm not going to let you off the hook so easily...spill the beans.

I don't think there's currently a shortage of downtown hotels. If SW selects PS, there are four hotels within a few blocks walking distance (Renaissance, Marriott, Hilton, Drury Plaza)

There's been a history of community resentment and old-bitter dudes, dating back to Ralph Locher's administration in 1964 and the beginning of school busing.

This has been the history of immigration and outward migration in America; regardless of the state, city or community. It's what this country is all about. It's most pronounced in cities like New York, Philadelphia, Chicago or Washington, but it has happened and continues to happen in Cleveland as well. Immigrants initially congregate, they then assimilate, become more upwardly mobile, then move to more diverse, less segregated, more affluent communities. You've even seen it within the LGBTQ+ community. Most of what were once considered the "Gay Ghettos;" San Francisco's Castro, Los Angeles' West Hollywood and New York City's West Village have become less homocentric and more culturally and sexually diverse as same-sex relationships have become more mainstream. Even Harlem is no longer an exclusively African-American community, nor is East-Harlem predominantly Latino.

Kudos to the developer, Woda Group, for building affordable apartments for downtown residents in the service industry. Much, much more of this is needed to replenish old housing stock in the core and to provide decent housing for those who are less affluent.

The article does imply however that Weston has been sitting on their lots since 2015, awaiting an offer from SW. I hope the PS site comes to fruition but the river site could also serve SW's needs for several reasons. "One potential theory among insiders is that Weston sat on the site — meanwhile putting apartments in The Standard nearby — because another opportunity came up. Some believe that was Sherwin-Williams' rumored search for a new corporate headquarters, which ended up being put on hold by its purchase of Valspar Inc. in 2017."

It's also the result of the fact that for most of the previous 100 years, no building was permitted to exceed the height of Terminal Tower. The Sohio (BP, 200 PS) building is a prime example. It wasn't until Ameritrust and Society (the largest banks at the time) squared off to build the tallest building in the city that those restrictions were eased. Either would have dwarfed all others, but obviously Society (Key) won the fight. Prior to then, most of the tallest commercial buildings were ligned up along the East 9th Street Financial District. Now Key towers above all others and skews the skyline towards PS.

DCA's "Let's Build Something" video has an interesting rendering at the end. It shows a penciled-in version of a new PS high-rise, on the Jacob's lot, that appears to be about 1000 ft.

My office is in Miami Gardens, its visible from Aventura, sits in the middle of nowhere and yes, it could have been a nice themed hotel, consistent with the R&RHF&M.

I've argued these points extensively and exhaustively upthread. It must be done for the region, not just the City to prosper. In addition to the need for local collaboration across numerous disperate stakeholders, the State of Ohio must be part of the solution, and therein lies the big challenge.
