I was surprised how well Browns stadium worked for soccer. The way the stands are built keeps the noise in and and the sightlines intimate. The lower bowl was absolutely packed which creates great atmosphere. We went to the warehouse district afterwards but being from Columbus we are now allergic to bar smoke. Browns stadium was great with 30k. MLS games draw 15k. In addition to killing the atmosphere the economics don't work as well to open a huge stadium for $10-$15 a head. Not to mention seasonal scheduling conflicts and gridiron (literally, the painted lines) overlap. MLS knows this so they are only awarding teams which already have a (Soccer Specific) stadium built or far along in the planning process.
  2. This project has started. I took this on Monday. Since then they have demolished the white building in the background and the sign is down too. You can see the south corner on Jeffrey Place on the far left.
  3. Depends which way the wind is blowing. I really don't smell them as much up on 1st as I did down on Hamlet & Warren. I love doughnuts but havent had one in all the time I've lived down there. If they opened an outlet there might be trouble though. I've been deliquent in posting pictures but I'll get some soon. They finished the first row a long time ago but the interiors don't seem to be quite done. No further constuction has started.
  4. Hey don't knock it. We used to go to the Chipotle at Easton for lunch frequently. One one occassion the person in front of us on line was Brian McBride. Steak burritos=great soccer players.
  5. I go away for a month and low and behold, progress. There is now a small amount of building material onsite and at least a couple workers near 4th street. There is also some kind of wooden framework up. I'll get over there sometime soon to take some pictures.
  6. It appears they just broke ground on this project. There is a digger on the patch of grass at the north end of the site which is already hard at work.
  7. Today there's one small lonely bulldozer building a dirt pile by the trailer on the north side on the lot. Looks like they are smoothing the fenced in area for cars to park there.
  8. Most of the equipment in the picture above is now gone. In fact nothing big has been going on over there at all. They wired one of the trailers and finished crushing the rock pile on the south end of the site about 2 weeks ago. It would be nice to see a little more acitivty over there.
  9. Starting today both 11th and Chittenden will be closed for the duration of the week. When they reopen they will both be two-way streets from High to Grant (the tracks).
  10. This is literally right behind our new house. Our neighbor recently mentioned the parking issue. I wonder what revision was made to address the 50+ spot shortage.
  11. How many old stadiums offer as little nostaglia as Cooper Stadium? It's really one of the worst places I've ever seen a baseball game. The reserved seating has poor sight lines, uncomfortable seats and the metal amplifies every obnoxious sound the mutitudes of children can make. THe seats on the left field line are a joke. The ballpark dimensions are deeper down the lines than any major league stadium I can think of. The walkway to the sky boxes looks like the hallway of a prison. The only redeeming factor is the Cemetary which is at least unique. The parking is also atrocious and theres nothing to do in that area before or after a game. I cannot wait until they build the new ballpark in the Arena District. Of course for those of you with memories of Mattingly, Jeter etc. it probably feels like Yankee Stadium (another awful mid 70s rebuild). I will gladly dance on the rubble of the Coop.
