Cincinnati: Downtown: Queen City Square
Well, I don't know. If it does, the question would then become whether the pole is solid, or if it's made of multiple segments bolted together. If it's segmented, then I presume each segment would represent a level. Then there's also the question of whether the base structure of the pole was shrouded by a curtain. I highly suspect we're going to get in trouble for taking this OT. Perhaps we should start a new thread and debate the flagpole there...? lol.

^ Don't even get me started on that glass cube they're proposing for the Banks.

Okay, I think I pretty much understand what Cygnus AND Dirty Sandpit are saying. What I'm calling the final "level" consists of 3 arches. So as to my original question: there is only 1 "level", consisting of 3 segmented arches, left to construct...correct? Again, sorry to cause a problem.

Yeah, something like that. A year from now we'll be looking back on this discussion as irrelvant.

^ Thank you, Dirty Sandpit. I was almost getting ready to post photos myself to clarify what I meant. Really, guys, I'm not trying to cause any arguments. I see 3 distinct arches so far, which means there is only 1 left.

What are you talking about? From what I can see in the webcam, it's only one more level to go. What am I missing? :wtf:

^ How about "one more level in the tiara"...? :-D

Out of idle curiosity, given the level of construction now in progress on the tiara, would it be safe to say QCS is now the city's tallest building, even though it isn't complete yet? Or does that not become official until after the crane is dismantled?

^ Hmm, yeah I guess you're right. They aren't pictured in that image I linked to.

I've noticed that, too. At certain angles, you can barely see the tiara. Other times it appears more prominent. I don't like that. I'm wondering if maybe what they are doing right now is simply constructing the tiara, and then will later paint it so that it stands out...? Or perhaps there are more "spokes" to install within each arch...? (I'm sorry, I really don't know the technical term when referring to them as "spokes".) Regarding the chillers, I tend to believe they will be concealed once the final middle arch is constructed. If you look at this photo - http://ww1.prweb.com/prfiles/2008/04/16/233391/QueenCitySquare.jpg - there appears to be some skirting around the base of the tiara that has yet to be constructed.

Cincinnati: To the top at Queen City Square's tiara
I'm sorry - I just can't help but think of a huge steel rollercoaster when I look at these pictures. How cool would it be to have one that tall? LOL! Just kidding. Anyway, Sherman, I really admire your photos and talent as a photographer. I'm a HUGE fan of B&W photography and dabble in it myself.

Thanks for clarifying that, because I really wasn't sure what Thomasbw (Brad...?) meant by "another pair and then the center one". Yeah, I guess I was thinking of the tiara as consisting of 4 different arches, but that's my bad because of how I was viewing it. So what I'm understanding is that they are currently finishing up the 3rd "level" of the tiara, and then will contruct the final middle one that rises to the final height of the building. Is that correct?

Cincinnati: Downtown: Queen City Square
Correct me if I'm wrong, but there's still one more arch they have to put up above the one they are finishing right now, right?

Thanks, Civvik. I understand. It's a shame. Whenever I see Union Centre, I want to hurl. All the office buildings there look the same. Uptown Oxford is a place of relatively unique character, even though it's not an urban area. So I'd like to think they could have at least done something a bit different.

Yeah, I agree. As much as I'd like to see something taller than QCS downtown, I wouldn't want something the height of Sears Tower. I forgot to mention before...speaking of the Aronoff Center, prior to that there had been a plan for a tower which, when viewed from above, resembled a 3-leaf clover. Does anyone by chance have a rendering of that, or know where I might be able to find one? I don't remember what the project was named, and not sure why they scrapped the idea, but it was a cool looking tower.

This all reminds me of something I did a long time ago. I used to have ideas about what the city's skyline would look like with different towers here and there, so I sketched up a rough drawing. Where QCS is now, I had a taller tower...about 750'. Fountain Square West had a tower of about 800', and I inserted a tower of about 850' where the Aronoff Center now is on Walnut. Where Civvik has placed a 700-footer in his mock-up above, I likewise had a tower of the same height. And just so it didn't look to heavy on the east, I put in a 450-footer in the vicinity of 4th and Plum. Cincinnati's skyline would really be different, and quite frankly I think it would be greatly improved, if some of these ideas we have could actually become a reality. Did anyone else ever do this sort of thing...draw fantasy sketches of what you'd like the skyline to look like?

What the hay...we're a waterfront city, too. So I say "go for it". LOL! Okay, not exactly the same kind of waterfront, but still.... :-P
-
Cincinnati: Downtown: Queen City Square
Civvik, that would be AWESOME! I'd love it. But then we'd need to get an 800-footer somewhere north of 6th Street to really make the skyline punch. Of course, someone would come along and find a way to still say Carew Tower was taller, or looked taller. LOL! (Don't anyone go bashing me now. I'm just being a smart-alec.)

God bless your heart! I'd seen that before and was looking for it just the other day, and I couldn't find it anywhere. Thanks so much for posting that. JVarney, glad to know I'm not the only one wondering about that. I don't feel so weird now. Natininja, thanks for the idea. It gives me something to work with. I appreciate it.

Stupid question - again. More to the point, this will sound a bit weird. When viewing the construction progress on the queencitysquare.com webcam, can anyone look at the crane and extrapolate what spot on the crane would be the same level as the apex of the final arch in the tiara? I mean, first section down from the top...second...middle of the third...? Don't ask why I'm asking - it's just a stupid thing I'm trying to picture in my mind. Thanks.

Could someone please explain to me the fascination with red-brick clad buildings in recent years? I mean, seriously...it seems like every new project, from the Banks to the office buildings at Union Centre, are all red-brick boxes. Are there no architects with a sense of creativity these days?

How do you figure...the flag pole? Ugh...doesn't count. ;) Unless, of course, you want to include the flagpole on top of Atrium II as part of that tower's height. BUT....we've already been down this road before. Some include flagpoles, some don't.

Does anyone have any thoughts about the new skyscraper being built in Oklahoma City? Love it, hate it...? I didn't see anything at this site about it, so I thought I'd start this new thread. http://okc.about.com/od/attractionsandevents/a/okcdevontower.htm

Cincinnati: Downtown: The Banks
This is precisely why I lurk 99% of the time I come here and very rarely ever post. It's hard to know when someone is being sarcastic and when they are being serious. This doesn't seem to have stopped the other some-thousand people from posting. This board is pretty well-behaved as far as discussion boards go. Completely agree to that. I'm terrified to post on some other development discussion boards. UO also has very active moderators compared to other sites. If you're having a problem, you should shoot them a Private Message. Oh no, my friend, I'm not having a problem with anyone. I'm just trying to keep myself from becoming one. LOL!

This doesn't seem to have stopped the other some-thousand people from posting. This board is pretty well-behaved as far as discussion boards go. It's not about whether the board is well-behaved. That's not what I mean....sorry. I just have a problem recognizing sarcasm sometimes. If I read something that sounds serious and then respond to it, only to find out it wasn't meant to be taken seriously, it makes ME look like an ass. So from now on, I've decided to observe. I do appreciate what I read here, though. :)
