Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
I Think the last diagram is great, Burnham! What do you think about a plaza on the south square extending from the monument Westward to a cafe/visitor center located in front of Tower City. Outdoor seating on this plaza would be nice. And how about a few of the Hanna Fountains (if there still around) on the Northern square?

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
I currently live in Berkeley, CA. Have lived in San Francisco, Oakland, Seattle. Have spent time in Portland and many other "great" cities. Cleveland has some problems, but is far better than it's reputation. Many of the above cities don't come close to being as good as their reputations. My wife is a CA native and is impressed with Cleveland, and we will most likely move back to Cleve. My point is; the media picks certain places like Portland to praise and Cleveland to put-down....and people believe the media- even the locals. And believe it or not, a lot of people (frequently the young, job-optional crowd, will move someplace just because they hear repeatedly how cool it is.

Northeast Ohio / Cleveland: General Transit Thread
I love the idea of the WestShore commuter rail line going to Tower City. Now....continue it Eastward on Huron Rd. to E9th St, head North on E9th (coordinated with the "9/12 District" efforts), then Eastward along the path of the previously proposed extension on the Waterfront Line. From E9th Eastward it could be the "EastShore" Line.

Is Cleveland Liberal?

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
By the way, thanks to all of you that have, and will continue to, fight for rail. I will be moving back to Ohio in 6-8 months and appreciate the effort!!

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
I think you are all way over-analyzing this. Kasich has future political ambitions. He was, and will again be, a Fox News guy. He needs Fox News and Tea Party types to help him ascend the ranks of the Republican Party. Look at what Glen Beck is doing in Southern OH.....talking (lying) about how a small town rejected Federal help. If Kasich takes 400 mil from the Feds, what will Sarah and Glen say?? It's all politics, and it makes me want to puke.

Cleveland Waterfront Line Extension / Downtown Loop
Due to nay-sayers, rail of any kind needs to be reasonably successful very quickly. Therefore, I feel any new rail downtown would need to connect already established residential and business districts. This will help "sell" rail, thus allowing expansion to less developed areas in order to spur development. Americans, and probably Ohioans more-so, need nearly instant success in order to gain support.

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
And according to the article, Voinovich was for 3C before he "studied" the proposal more thoroughly....uh yeah...

Cleveland: Downtown: Playhouse Square Development and News
Sorry if I'm straying off topic, but I think if the Children's museum were to move from UC, it should move to Playhouse Square.

Cleveland: District of Design
I've always thought that it should be the "Art and Design District".

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
You're upset enough to leave, but indifferent enough to not vote...WTF?

2009 Population Estimates for Ohio Cities over 50,000
Please... enlighten us. I would like to know more. Cleve17, you spend a lot of time giving what I think are emotional responses that are packaged as fact. Please clarify so I don't have to feel that I am wasting my time reading your posts. And please... when someone requests a source for your statements, please just give a source, or state that you made it up, rather than being a smart *ss. You're taking the enjoyment out of reading these posts.

"Main span ends just East of Ontario street"....don't they mean just West of Ontario?? I'm having trouble picturing this.

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
I understand where you're coming from KJP. I have lived in CA for the past 14 yrs and have a career that will allow me to live almost anywhere. My wife and I have decided to move back to the Cleveland area to be closer to family, but when I hear politicians opposing progressive changes that will cost relatively little, simply to create a wedge issue, it drives me nuts. I, like the majority of young skilled workers, are looking for a progressive place to live that has strong urban areas with good public transportation. If OH officials are serious about attracting highly skilled and educated workers, then they need to push for the 3C as well as other public transit issues. Ohio already has a bad rep amongst the "creative class" and that rep is about to get worse rather than better.

2010 Gubernatorial Election
Hts121's questions are certainly not pointless. How could one possibly make the statement that one candidate is superior because he is for lower taxes and reigning in the budget without asking specifics?? Would I get your vote if I said I would sh!t hundred dollar bills for all Ohio citizens every morning?? Would you ask how I intend to perform this feat??

Cleveland & Akron Inter-City Relations
I grew-up in the Akron area and went to college at KSU, then CSU and worked for 5+ yrs in the Cleveland area. I think there is a divide, but not an apparent dislike between the two. I feel the reasons are: 1) distance- each city has a lot to offer, so residents are less likely to make the trek from one to the other. and 2) Akron and Cleveland are culturally very different despite their proximity. Akron has a strong West Virginia influence, while Cleveland has a stronger Eastern European influence and has a much larger African American population. I feel that this cultural divide is significant, especially for metros that are right next to each other.

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
Those opposed to the 3c plan are campaigning in typical fashion, a few short phrases repeated over and over: " nobody will ride it" and " it will take a 17 mil subsidy to operate it". Trying to argue is not going to work because most ohioans WILL never ride it and most ohioans think 17 mil is a lot of money. Let the opposition have this, even if people will ride it, and even if 17 mil is nothing compared to highway, and many other, subsidies. those of us that are for the 3c should also repeat a few short talking points: "The 400 mil goes to upgrading freight lines as well". "This money will be spent for passenger rail in another state if not in ohio". "Either Ohio will be part of a nationwide high speed rail system, or it will be left out of the system". While I don't think that the 3c line will be heavily utilized at first, I do think it is a very important investment for our state. I think Ohio should be a leg bone in the nationwide high speed rail skeleton, or the legs will go around us and we will simply be in the crotch of America.

Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
I know the Cleve isn't perfect, but there does seem to be an increased effort to always place Cleveland at, or near, the top of all crap lists. Could there be an increase of attacks on Cleveland in an attempt to influence LeBron to leave?

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
Would Public Auditorium make a good natatorium/racquet club? Free passes to convention goers staying in downtown hotels. The Waterfront Line could be continued Southward from the proposed Northcoast Transit Center under East Mall Drive to a station that connects the new convention ctr under the malls to the natatorium. Then continue the waterfront line to Superior Ave, up to street level on Superior Ave (heading East) to E17th St, South on E17th to Prospect and back to Tower City. Most major downtown attractions and sports facilities, as well as, many hotels and parking garages would then be connected.

Cleveland Plan
Thanks for the clarification. With that said, I'm not sure if my ideas for this area make sense- oh well.
-
Cleveland Plan
When I said "build the new federal office bldg on Mall B", I was referring to the West side of the mall where the county administration bldg is (the county is moving out of this building), The current convention ctr is on the East side of Mall "B"- this is where I would like to see the proposed "Cleveland World Trade Center". Maybe you aren't aware of Mall "A", "B" and "C" in Cleveland being grassy plazas surrounded mostly by government bldgs? The North end of Mall "C" overlooking the lake is one of the proposed sites for the new convention ctr- this is where I would like to see the Trolley Museum/Train Station.

Cleveland: Innerbelt News
Nice article KJP. You have been a great advocate for a better Cleveland- please don't give-up! If neighborhoods in Tremont are an issue with the Southern alignment, does it make any sense at all to build a new bridge that crosses over the existing bridge as described in my "Cleveland Plans" posting in the "City Discussion" section? I know almost nothing about bridge design, but I thought I would throw it out there.

Cleveland Plan
I am a former Clevelander that will most likely return in a couple of years. I have been reading this site for a while and decided to give my ideas for making downtown Cleveland a better place. 1) Convince the Cleveland Clinic to move all of their administrative offices to a new signature building on public square rather than to the old TRW headquarters in the suburbs. 2) Build the convention ctr behind tower city. 3) Build a trolley museum/train station at the North end of Mall"c" extending over the RR tracks. This would help to complete the original "Group Plan". Trolley cars could run on the WFL through the museum. 4) The WFL should be turned into a "Downtown Loop" by extending South on E9th St, West across the Lorain-Carnegie bridge, down W25th St, North into the west bank of the Flats, East on Center St, through Stonebridge, across the Center St bridge and back to the original WF line. 5) Use the old convention center on Mall"B" for a new Cleveland World Trade and Technology Center. 6) Build the new federal office bldg on Mall "B" where the county administrative offices currently are. 7) A new Children's Museum/Theater on the parking lot at E17th?? and Euclid Ave. Partners in this project could be CSU, Tri-C, Cleveland schools and Playhouse Square Inc. Maybe PBL would even like it! 8) A new WF line extending East as in the "Lakefront Plan" and extending West from NC Harbor over the Main Ave bridge and along the proposed Lake Front Blvd to Clifton Ave. 9) Extend a Rapid Line South from the W25th St station through residential areas. Imagine the potential for TOD at this station and at all other stations located at points where the rapid lines intersect the previously mentioned "Downtown Loop". 10) I would like to see space for a new neighborhood South of gateway that can only exist if the innerbelt bridge is moved South. ODOT says that the new bridge can not be built South of the existing bridge because it would cut through neighborhoods in Tremont. Why couldn't the new bridge be built North of the current bridge on the West end and South of the current bridge on the East end? The new bridge could cross over the old bridge as it also crosses the river. This part of the new bridge would obviously be higher than the old bridge and could, therefore, be the cable-stay portion. We all spend alot of time reading and sharing our ideas, but we could do so much more if we presented a plan of our ideal city. City leaders, and more recently, developers say they want to stop the "brain drain". What if a plan for this ideal city was presented to city leaders, developers and the media and it was endorsed by all of the various "Young Professionals" organizations within the city? The people that city leaders say they are hoping to attract to the area should be the very people telling them how to do it. I think if these various groups speak-up in a unified manner, their opinion would carry a great deal of clout with local leaders.
