John Glenn Columbus International Airport
I've had discussions with others too about how we still won't get international flights because we aren't big enough even with the new terminal but 1. Our runway is technically long enough to land an A380. Never ever going to happen or be needed but for the sake of the runway not being big enough, thats not accurate. Could also be expanded with reroute/burial of Stelzer and/or Hamilton if absolutely desired, but not required. 2. New terminal will include 2 gates for customs. 3. Narrow bodies are becoming a big part of transatlantic travel with all major airlines even going as far as working to configure flagship business class on narrow bodies. So an airport with all narrow body gates isn't going hold back international access. The city, state, airport leadership and business community is what's going to be our biggest help or hindrance for international flights.

The renovations updated outdated elements of the airport to buy time, in all, about 10 years so it's not a waste. They still need to be able to attract travelers and business in that time. As far as gates go, 39 gates, at an average of 6 turnarounds per day per gate, that's 234 flights in and the same out. Columbus averaged 113 airline landings in Dec 2023 per their data sheet. They advertise 148. Plenty of room. There are already gates that operate once a day if that. It's all going to come down to leasing. But if airlines keep the same number of gates they currently have more or less, then we've got alot of flights before 39 isn't enough. The only reason it won't feel like enough, or feels tight now, especially in A gates, is the way airlines bank flights. So even a new terminal will feel 'full' for the 6am bank, 5pm bank, etc. Airlines don't spread out their flights, they cluster them to Maximize connections. What most people don't experience is when the airport feels empty between the banks, even our current terminal. That's when airlines would be able to expand flights as is.

Columbus: Scioto Peninsula Developments and News
My only critique 'as currently envisioned' is that I would like to see the sharp corners softened. Cosi, the Vets, the river, milestone, Main Street Bridge, heck, event the old parking deck avoid acute angles so to me, it almost stands out in a bad contrast with so much of the rest of the building and riverfront in general. That's all. It also makes me hope that it encourages the city to close the street to the East of Cosi and turn it into more of a multi-use plaza than an asphalt cut through that happens to host events.

'As currently envisioned' So who's gonna tell the guy from Reddit?

Columbus: Downtown Developments and News
I guess Edwards failed to get the memo about 'Challenges downtown' and needing 'to see continued improvement' downtown before making any commitments with a significant development. He should call up CH and tell them to get their you know what's out of you know where.

I dont think it's office vacancy thats his concern. BizFirst just did a piece in January about how he's 'bullish' on office space and building a bunch of new office space despite the market because he believes it will be needed and he wants to be ready. It's probably retail vacancy and crime or some stuff like that.

Why is Crawford Hoying the only developer, seemingly, who bemoans 'Challenges Downtown'... just sell your properties and stick to the suburbs then. I feel like he's the only one that is constantly saying why he isn't developing downtown.

Columbus: Downtown: Capitol Square Renaissance (Edwards Cos.)
They were initially going to rebuild a portion of the original facade. I'm not sure the current state if the building confirms whether or not they are. Upon closer look at the rendering, it almost looks like they intend to just paste it with no actual windows or anything. And seeing the elevator core through one of the windows still looks like it can happen?

DTCL11 replied to Summit Street's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionUnless there is other information not publicly available. I went down a rabbit hole in 2022 and debunked that rumor 😉 TLDR, every publicly released version of the building, from announcement, to drawings, to the scale model on display before ground breaking is the exact building we have today.

DTCL11 replied to Summit Street's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionLet's start a rumor that it's infrastructure to make it twice as tall in the future just like the Hyatt at the Convention Center or Rhodes Tower.

DTCL11 replied to Summit Street's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionI like the concept. I just wish the commission had been more particular on aesthetic. Is just doesn't sit right.

DTCL11 replied to Summit Street's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionThe office building at High and N Brodway has added an awkward digital time and temperature board. I appreciate the thought but think it's a little off.

"Whittington explained that the Ohio Theatre was built as a movie theatre and while the acoustics are good, they were not made for live symphonic music." Well, it wasn't built for stage shows either and the sound system and acoustics for Broadway shows is ALSO terrible. As a season ticket holder, when I see the same show in other theaters, the difference becomes even more apparent. Hopefully resolving that is also part of the plan if they intend to keep shows at the Ohio.

Columbus: Brewery District Developments and News
The space highlighted as 'new tenant' is 20,000 SF. If it is Otherworld, and they are only taking up the space highlighted exactly, they are reducing the size of their space by more than 30%. Seems odd unless they are 1. Taking up more than the highlighted area or 2. Doing split venues. My other concern is the infrastructure of Audubon. That's potentially a significant amount of traffic cutting through the park and I don't recall if the parking lot at the building has been renovated as well to handle the vehicular traffic that may be expected. Edit. I just caught the text box says 28,700 SF. That's more than the SF of the highlighted area. So that's closer. But still doesn't quite fit with prior narrative of wanting more space. Unless they have options to expand they didn't have out east. Then it makes more sense. Otherwise I agree the branding and everything else is certainly consistent. I still have concerns over traffic on the road that cuts through the park. Perhaps it means the city/park my prioritize that alternative access along the tracks with the new apartments too.

I have been curious about space because it seems theoretically small to me. I drove by this weekend and its bigger than I remember now that I'm intentionally looking at it. I overlaid the footprint of the Ohio Theatre from High to the AEP Pavilion and the Alley to the Covered Walkway. Plenty of space assuming they aren't trying to be larger than the Ohio and don't need all the backstage area for huge fly system etc.

I'll always advocate that we do need a better state museum but I say keep it where it is. My dream was always a complimentary contemporary structure that builds out of the original brutalist structure and covering the parking lot with a roof structure to turn it in to a large greenspace in front. Then you still get to maintain connection and expand Ohio Village. Moving the State museum could make Ohio Village even more obsolete. I won't argue if it's moved but I do think if done right, that curve could be a neat 'welcome' visual for the city and fairgrounds district.

Can we also talk about the CoMIE abbreviation? I'm not sold. We all recognize more people will call it [Kahm-mee] and not [kō-mee], right? And while I can credibly accused of having commie Tendencies, just seems odd to throw it out. Thought I left those days behind me once I left Commie Market (Community Market Groceries) territory many years ago.
