Not just one, 4. 2 Prescenium and 2 Box. And no marquee. Just some poster spots outside of it. Available Light and The Contemporary (CATCO) operate there the most. The Davidson Theater. This state-of-the-art, 903-seat facility opened in 1989 as part of the Vern Riffe Center for Government and the Arts. The Capitol Theatre offers intimate performance experiences including CAPA's presentations of comedy, music, dance, theater, family entertainment, and cultural programming. Also included in the Riffe Center Theatre Complex are 3 studio-style theatre spaces: Studio One, a 250-seat flexible space; Studio Two, an arena-style black box theatre; and Studio Three, a dance space/meeting room seating 100 (Sorry for the photos quality. Yeah. It's a catch 22. But I too would prefer a separate arts complex for non Orchestra related arts. It's really underappreciated how great the Riffe Center is and the fact that such an asset was integrated into state offices speaks well of leadership at the time. The bad part of it is it lacks distinct visibility and a destination feel that other local theaters have. I'd love another theater complex and art space on the Peninsula, downtown, or Franklinton. I'd settle for a bunch of sculptures along the river from Confluence Park to Scioto Audubon. I'm still holding out for something cool for Wexner's private art collection 🤞 I also have a secret desire for Mott's Military Museum to become an extention of the Vets Museum on the Peninsula- Columbus: Franklinton Developments and News
They have to provide their funding plan to the city by June to maintain the land agreement. But also assuming that there's probably no other organization clamoring for the spot with a viable plan, I'm sure there will be extensions if needed.- Columbus: Franklinton Developments and News
That's not CAPA. CAPA is not involved in that at all. It's a symphony project only. They may handle the ticketing but they aren't raising the funds for construction. [Which has resulted in some arts related drama. Some organizations/folks feel slighted at not being included in the discussion or being considered for having room for space for them. They dream of a mega facility for more types of performance and not just symphony/symphony adjacent spaces]- Columbus: Downtown Developments and News
They put a 30 story hotel on a much harder plot of land integrated into an existing convention center. There's been conceptual proposals for more on a lot a fraction of that size north of the convention center abutting a majoy highway retention wall. They added 3 stories to a historic structure near CCAD. They just built condos on a postage stamp between and alley and another building. They built an apartment building around an existing one story structure etc etc etc. A future development on this lot isn't even close to being moderately difficult.- Columbus: Downtown Developments and News
See, the thing about the way this is being developed is a parking lot, configured the way it is, allows for future development. It's hardly a concern at this point. And not every single building needs retail. Yeah, this corner might not get a coffee shop some day, but that's not the biggest crime when we have developers in this city tearing down buildings and never fulfilling development promises, or just sitting on property for decades, or parking lot owners who refuse to sell. Hate and/or calling it the worst or even one of the worst, or bad in general is such a strong feeling toward this when it checks so many good boxes. Perfect? No. But what is? It's better than it was and doesn't prevent future expansion possibilities while trying to address the needs of now within their confines.- Columbus: Downtown Developments and News
^100% agree. The hate this project is getting is unwarranted. Even with the downsize it's a decent filler project in downtown with a standard aesthetic that is hardly objectionable compared to many other copy and paste projects. Certainly doesn't deserve the superlative of being the worst.- Columbus: Downtown Developments and News

Personal growth and looking inward seems to be very important to you? Kaufman: I'm a self-proclaimed growth junkie. I love that kind of work. When I was little, my mom took me to a therapist, and I loved it and have been in and out of therapy my whole life. It's making me a better person. I learned [transcendental meditation], and it's still with me 25 years later. In more recent years, I've gotten into breath work and yoga nidra [a form of yoga that helps relieve stress]. What's next for you? Kaufman: I'm starting to diversify into other things [such as Besa and Rhove and doing some venture capital funding]. I don't feel I'm as needed in in the real estate side of things anymore. It's generally not recommended to paint deck framing in modern construction in general and may even code be code. Now, why these companies don't use metal deck framing that can be painted or put up soffit annoys me because it's esthetically annoying but there is a legitimate reason why they aren't painted.- Columbus: Downtown: Merchant Building

I think one of these or greater belongs downtown but probably needs to be in a spot that is a quick walking distance to more lines. Seems like a perfect idea to work in to the transit hub at the Old Greyhound station.- Columbus: Random Development and News

At least as of a few years ago. I dont imagine that has changed. A yearish, maybe more? But I don't anticipate anyone moving in while the tower is being built. But if a business, (with a shady owner) can be around that long before the tower, it's not a bad spot for after the tower either. I dont have many concerns over its longevity when hole in the walls exist everywhere in imperfect locations. And if it's becomes a rotating cast of businesses, it's no different than the perpetual changes within the market itself.- Columbus: Downtown: Merchant Building
Granero was open for about 8 years. The location might be tough but with an 8 year run, I wouldn't put it in the same category as a retail spot with new concepts every couple of years. Heck, it has a better track record than the old Rigsbys space which has been 3 or 4 different things in about the same amount of time. It's all about the business. Over 16000 attendees vs under 3000. Pokemon was also under 3000. The Annual Cultivate Convention is closer with over 10k attendees. Origins had over 17k last year and that's annual. And whether or not many are local, they're still eating and filling up hotels. Then there's the Arnold. That speaks to the point of being the largest convention of its type or trade doesn't always mean alot in comparison. It's still thousands of people who wouldn't otherwise be in this area a week if it wasn't for the convention center and thay helps. And yet, none of these contribute to the local economy more than Quarter Horse Congress. (650,000 attendees and over $400 million into the local economy annually. Easier to do over a multi week event but still) There are cities that build entire economies around one or two large events a year. Hotels who remain in business for just a handful of sell out weekends a year. So as long as the convention center is landing a couple MAJOR conferences a year, the growth will continue and the neighborhoods will benefit, some weeks more than others. And this is not to say conventions of hundreds or a couple thousand are not contributive because they absolutely are. Anyway. Can we move conventions talk to the convention center thread? TLDR: the convention center hosts conventions of various sizes resulting in hundreds up to tens of thousands of visitors, depending on the week, who all contribute to the local economy and vibrancy of convention center adjacent neighborhoods.- Columbus: Downtown: The Estrella / 199 E. It's a 50/50 shot. The exposed center parapet between the buildings leads me to think the crown was removed and they just capped it so it's likely just a flat brick wall and the details were removed. Would be interesting to see it removed for fun- Columbus: Downtown: The Estrella / 199 E. Rich St

16-Bit announced the closure of their 4th Street location next week. Amazing how this great development has seemingly knocked out close to an entire block of one of the most popular pockets of the city. I'll be curious to see if Dirty Franks holds on or calls it quits too since they have the campus location now. I'm guessing 16-bit has somewhere else downtown lined up because I can't see them leaving a vacuum downtown like that. Edit: with this, if DF goes too, I'd honestly be ok with a revision to get rid of the DF and 16-bit building as they are the least contributing buildings in that stretch. Some sort of 3-5 story Street front design that steps it up to the adjoining building to the south.- Columbus: Short North Developments and News
DTCL11 replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionI think the tourism discussion contributes but I would also argue that is more a marker of permanent resident density for this location, so far North and away from the convention center, hotels, etc. If it wasn't for growing density, I'm not sure it would be there. The Short North isn't seeing a spike of tourism that is hasn't seen in the last 10 years. What it is seeing is a large influx of residents with growing potential for more in the undeveloped spaces. I think that is something to be celebrated in a way. Absolutely, Starbucks will be successful for familiarity of tourists and residents. (Let's not preten that CBUS residents are above Starbucks. Each have their purposes). To the point of other urban areas, some of the most dense neighborhoods of Chicago and New York have them every couple blocks as pointed out above and that's not to accomodate tourists. This Starbucks is also a return to Starbucks 'third place' model it seems after years of transitioning away from that and if it was geared to accomodate tourism more than the neighborhood model, it would be less accommodating to sitting and staying. And 100000000%. It's almost criminal that the CBUS circulator has not been revived. - Columbus: Franklinton Developments and News
