  1. Completely agree with the point, but I also stared at this map for a good minute before I figured out it looked weird because it's including the water area of the Lake Erie counties
  2. This is a common misconception, but is not an entirely accurate representation of the postwar growth of Columbus No existing suburbs have ever been annexed into the city of Columbus (unless perhaps you count Franklinton in 1859) What did happen was as vacant or agricultural township land was developed with higher uses, to receive water and sewer service that land was annexed into Columbus as a condition of its development. The postwar "suburban style" development described would have happened regardless, what Columbus did was to ensure that the overwhelming bulk of it, and thus its property and income taxes, was incorporated into the city So whereas in NE Ohio an area like Northland would be a separate or several separate cities of its own (with a population of ~97,000 in fact it would be the 7th-largest city in all of Ohio), instead it has for its entire existence merely been a neighborhood within Columbus Subsequently, in the 1980s the win-win agreement between Columbus Public Schools and many of the suburban public school districts held the boundaries of each as static as the city of Columbus continued to grow. Thus, there are many areas within Columbus proper that are zoned for suburban schools be it Dublin, New Albany, Hilliard, Westerville, etc This has both kept the size and influence of suburbs in check (there are no Columbus suburbs with a population over 50k for instance), as well as instilled a general sense of regional cooperation since almost every suburb either has extensive borders with Columbus, is completely encircled by it, or has thousands of Columbus students attending their schools
  3. There will be but they'll be panhandling or fake violin playing
  4. I'd love if they kept the sign but I'm sure it's a goner. At the very least I hope there are plans for a new home for the golden bear itself
  5. Once again I open this thread and am devastated 😭
  6. There are also spaces available in Edwards' projects across the street. I know the corner space (former Brioso) was said to be a Parisian sidewalk cafe concept, but the rest of the Madison's, White Haines, and new 100 N High building are also coming soon
  7. Since when is the Georgesville Road and 270 area considered the Hilltop?
  8. The error in the date jumped out to me too. I appreciate CU but they consistently mess up with erroneous information like that in the details The buildings (beginning with this one to the south) can be seen under construction in this aerial photo from 1963
  9. This whole idea seems very half baked... (if that even) COTA bought this site two years ago now and still has basically no idea what if anything they want to do with it "an interchange between buses, bikes, scooter and other transportation modes" What does this mean exactly? Obviously bays for different bus routes but then what else? Bike racks? Striped zones to park scooters at, or pick up Ubers from? Why do they need this large, prime site to accomplish that? Why can't they turn the two existing (and highly underutilized) downtown transit centers they already own and operate into these "transportation hubs" instead, or even in the meantime? Why do simple improvements take years of studies and re-studies and "interim uses" aka a grass lot to get done? It seems to me that COTA simply doesn't need or really even know how they might use this site. Also, the article alludes that their ownership of the site may in fact complicate efforts to develop it with the dense mixed-uses we all want to see there. I'd much rather CDDC buy it and oversee a process to get it in the hands of a private developer (or developers, the site is large enough for multiple projects) with a big vision (ala Scioto Peninsula)
  10. The renderings are detailed, the plans and sections submitted are still very conceptual (essentially space planning/ bubble diagrams) Detailed, scaled drawings and material specifications are required ultimately for a certificate of appropriateness. And it would show that the owner/ developer is seriously invested in moving the project forward by proceeding to the next design phase Back to the renderings, ideally I'd like to see liner units screening the parking garage from the street... As much as we complain about Edward's Nicholas building, that's one design move they got absolutely correct. There the second floor has a row of narrow units along the entirety of High which hides the parking level behind very effectively. Unfortunately they give the game away on the cheaped-out side facing Long, but I'll take what we can get
  11. It's definitely odd, and the lower units whose windows look out directly onto the back of that brick wall are going to have it rough ... They could have creatively (and relatively easily) added some openings to punch through at different points while still preserving the bulk of the murals
  12. I'm glad it's back, while also disappointed it seems they haven't progressed the design any further into details The city shouldn't approve any demo until the new building is ready to go, cash and building permit in hand
  13. Also got overwhelmed at work this week, but looking forward to making the next one!
  14. Sounds like we'll know pretty soon whether or not the prefab apartment scheme is ready for primetime
  15. I've heard a rumor from a reliable-enough source that I think it's worth posting here - the ground floor of the new 12-story building will be taken up in its entirety by Punch Bowl Social I think this would be a pretty good fit to complement the other establishments nearby, and help ensure the length of the plaza always has some level of activity in it
  16. Damn I was hoping this would include some first floor retail space facing the park
  17. That would be great ... But I'm betting we'll get fiber cement board spray painted green
  18. The critical part of this whole thing will be what is the green material? Stonehenge has made something of a cottage industry out of delivering conceptually sound projects with extremely sloppy detailing and cheap materials (see the pierce downtown, the valencia in the short north) I hope the commission holds them accountable to get this done right
  19. The little plaza between the hotel and office building here is one of my favorite public spaces downtown Mature trees, the large fountain, plentiful outdoor seating - it's fantastic Also it has perhaps the largest concentration of retail remaining downtown (as sad as that is), in its shopping arcade connecting to the commons (and previously City Center Mall)
  20. Rules for thee, not for we
  21. NW24HX replied to a post in a topic in General Transportation
Columbus uses two similar but less prejudicial signs at many of its intersections One, for drivers stating "turning vehicles yield to pedestrians" And the other for pedestrians warning "watch for turning vehicles"
  22. They really should build a cap on at least one side of 4th (park space or retail) ... surely they could find the money somewhere in the bottomless pit of this project I'm fine with the retail cap on 3rd vs High but the site of the county building at the NW corner of 3rd/Fulton should be turned over to a commercial developer ASAP
  23. When it comes to public art IMO, the more the better. I think this piece is exciting and unique and will help give this part of downtown the shot in the arm that Edwards is hoping for It certainly doesn't preclude more art being added to the riverfront or other public spaces, and actually might encourage it. I'd love to see large scale artwork start popping up in more spots all around the city
  24. Awesome and thanks for the pics @CbusOrBust! Can't wait to check this out next time I'm downtown!
