Columbus: Restaurant News & Info
NW24HX replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & EntertainmentI was out in the SN this past friday and saturday (NYE/Peach Bowl) and it was very busy both nights. To be fair the neighborhood has changed over time, and there's definitely more of a bar atmosphere and 20-something crowd now than in previous decades - where it would be mostly older/artsy people out for a classy dinner That alone I'm sure turns off many, but is indicative of the SN reaching a "nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded" type of vibe moreso than anything unsafe

Columbus: Scioto Peninsula Developments and News
That will be nicer once another building is built across from the hotel to 'close in' the street. Hopefully we can see a proposal for that smaller site at least soon, if the larger already-announced "phase 2" continues to have issues getting off the ground

Columbus: Eastland Developments and News
That's really too bad. There were a lot of unique and interesting local stores in there over the last decade or so. I was hoping they could somehow turn it around and thrive serving the diverse local and immigrant communities that have found a home in the surrounding neighborhoods Sadly I don't forsee any developers jumping at the site. And even if they did, we'd get a big box store and a Sheetz at best

Columbus: Northland Developments and News
I'm all for more development and housing in Northland, but buying up and putting out of business long-standing community anchors like Capri Lanes to replace them with cheap, single-use insular residential complexes along major commercial corridors is not helping the neighborhood IMO What Elevate Northland is trying to do would be much more beneficial to the area. Focus on the problem and underutilized/abandoned properties (there's no shortage of either), emphasize mixed-use projects, and strengthen the business districts with investments in new commercial space

NW24HX replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionI like the angled facades above but agree with @DTCL11that it looks odd at the ground level If they preserve the existing 1-story tile base and keep the rest of it as proposed I think it's a winner

NW24HX replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & Construction"Freepoint will occupy a 260,000-square foot building on 25 acres at 522 Milliken Drive, where Walker Manufacturing employed hundreds before it closed in 1994. The site is in Union Township, just north of the village of Hebron."

Columbus: Franklinton Developments and News
My only critique is OhioHealth should be on an upper floor of the office building so the street level could have more active retail or restaurant uses

Columbus: Downtown Developments and News
In my experience that location's very difficult to access because it's inside the Federal Building. You have to wait in line and fully go through security just to pop into USPS

Worthington: Developments and News
Something needs to be done with the mall but I think it's a shame to just rip off the roof and call it a day. The 'after' renderings of the mall portion leave a lot to be desired and I'd rather they just build the new anchor buildings and keep the rest as is. The glass dome and fountain especially make for a really nice interior space

NW24HX replied to CMH_Downtown's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionI've been very critical of this project, but it's definitely moving in the right direction. However that said, the punched windows are still overall too small, and 7 stories of cheap grey fiber cement panels still dominate every major view except the one which is cherry-picked for their rendering

NW24HX replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & EntertainmentI get being disappointed in Clintonville, but this isn't really a new development it's just taking over the former bank space Also that retail building, while single story, is nicely detailed, built to the street with ample patio space, and was a huge improvement over the Clark gas station formerly on the site

Columbus: Ohio Expo Center Developments and News
Improvements are definitely needed, but a lot of classic/ unique historic buildings are on the demo list ... Ohio buiding, Ag-Hort, Dairy barn, Janis center ...
-
Columbus: Northland Developments and News
Much needed. The early 2000s improvements along Morse Rd have held up almost surprisingly well and were a huge improvement to both aesthetics and safety along the corridor. There's no reason the same thing can't happen on 161

Miscellaneous Ohio Political News
I tend to agree with @amped91in general, that in the long term a 60% requirement to pass constitutional amendments would be good policy, because it protects from a simple majority from taking away fundamental rights But I also agree with @Mendothat in the shorter term its net effect will be negative, by making it harder to pass our immediate needs to protect abortion rights and fix the broken redistricting process Concurrently, IMO the most important thing in state government right now is redistricting reform. We have got to get that on the ballot and passed as soon as possible, because until we do, as you both noted we have an unrepresentative anti-democratic GOP super-majority reigning in power in the general assembly completely unchecked from passing laws at whim. They have effectively moved to eliminate any threat to their tenure to date (require 60% statewide isssue majority, place party affiliations on ballot for supreme court, restrict early and mail in voting, strip power from board of education, etc), continuing to narrow the available paths and timeframe to dislodge them I'm concerned that we've not heard more about the next steps on redistricting reform. It's been clear for months, way before the election results, that the ohio redistricting commission was incapable of fulfilling its duties, and that republicans would act in bad faith and grossly exploit the process as it exists now in their favor Those months have gone by, we've now also seen the fruit of the efforts come to bear, yet we still haven't heard any organized group come forward with its intention or a proposal to get additional reform on the statewide ballot. Petitions should be circulating now (and should have been during the campaign as well, based on the well-evidenced shenanigans of the state GOP all year long) To me, this is the root issue and keystone that needs to be in place if we're going to get anywhere at all on a number of other issues in this state for the foreseeable future. I hope that movement is well underway, and perhaps just being kept under wraps. If that movement has not started, or is only just coalescing, I hope that we can hear more soon on how we can get involved to support it. And it will be infinitely helpful for this initiative specifically, in the near future, if it only needs to pass at 50%+1

NW24HX replied to CMH_Downtown's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionThat went up fast it seems! I like the jagged roofline a lot - it's a little thing that adds a lot of visual variety vs the usual boring flat parapet edge. Especially when done as cheaply as at the neighboring "Highline on 9"

Columbus City Council
Interesting... I'm honestly surprised she's leaving politics, both as Senator Brown's daughter but also as someone who seemed to be making a name for herself in government lately She easily would have been one of two top contenders for Mayor after Ginther, along with Shannon Hardin

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
"Several Ohio mayors and planning agencies, including Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther and the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission, have officially started the process to restore Amtrak service through Columbus without waiting for state-level support. MORPC's letter puts the highest priority on the 3C line. Metro Columbus, the nation's 14th largest city, is the largest with no passenger rail. The letter also lists other routes the agency wants to help plan, passing through or starting in Columbus: Pittsburgh to Chicago, to Detroit via Toledo, to Athens via Lancaster, to Portsmouth via Chillicothe and a scenic route in Zanesville." https://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2022/11/03/morpc-columbus-cleveland-cincinnati-amtrak-request.html
