  1. DAMN! if I only had the money, it would be mine!!!! I can't believe it's on ebay...then again everything else is! ;-)
  2. Steiner is developing the Greene in the Southern Suburbs of Dayton right now, and it could be an ideal place for an Ikea. It would sit right of the Interstate and would only be a 30-45 minute drive for most of the people from Cincinnati. Only about and hour and 10 minutes for the Columbus residents.....and you have it sitting right in the middle of the wealthiest suburbs in Dayton. It could pull in the 3.3 million that is going to be Cin-Day region. The location would be about the same drive for a person living in Mason (Cincy) as it would for someone in the Northern Suburbs (Clayton) of Dayton.... It'll probably never happen, but I do think it would be a great location that would pull in a HUGE amount of customers.......
  3. I wouldn't get so caught up with Crate and Barrel specifically...I think they are just trying to get the point across that there was a promise of more upscale retail stores that are new to the area...something that seems to be lacking based on the list of announced retailers so far, except maybe for a couple of women's apparel stores...but certainly nothing major. Unfortunately, I'm sure the restaurants will be quite successful....Daytonians and area suburbanites will flock to them like lemmings, forgetting about their locally owned restaurants--imho, places that are much more likely to have better food and keep any money spent circulating within the local economy, not sending the profits off to corporate. I live about 5 miles from where this is being built, and I have to say the tenant list has been pretty lackluster when it comes to retail. Yeah, there are some high end fashion retailers for women, but other than that....it's been a wash. I do think they have some great restaurants coming...but I also like to local places just as well, though I have to admit I'm a big fan of the Cheesecake Factory. I think a lot of this will be cleared up when they announce the remaining tenants for phase 2. Based on what the developer told the Dayton Business Journal in last months article, which was: Steiner remains in negotiations with other potential tenants, and the company will announce more for the first phase. In addition, Rosenberg said he looks for the company to announce the second phase tenants before the end of this year. "I think you're going to see more retail in the second phase," he said. The mix will focus heavily on fashion and home-improvement stores, he added, many of them high-end stores. "I think phase II, when it's completed, will establish The Greene as the fashion area in all of Dayton," he said So based on that...I'm hoping we at least get a Pottery Barn. ;-/ Otherwise why go to the Greene when I can shop at J crew, Banana Repubic, A&F, Williams-Sonoma...etc. etc. at the Fairfield Commons, which is only 5 minutes away from the Greene....oh yeah, that's right, the restaurants....I have a feeling that is going to be the Greene's saving grace.....I guess we'll wait and see. I really do hope the Greene does get some wonderful tenants...it looks great!
  4. Highland Local 88.9 % Not sure where they would fall ,but probably in the top 50? all OGT data is at: http://www.ode.state.oh.us/proficiency/resultsOGT.asp
  5. I found some interseting info on all the Ohio public school districts, that I thought I would pass along. I'm not sure if this is the right forum or not, but I'll go ahead and post. Interesting fact: Last year, the top and bottom schools were from Dayton (Oakwood--top) (Jefferson--bottom) This year, the honor goes to Cleveland (Chagrin Falls--top) (East Cleveland--bottom) Here are the results and corresponding % of students who passed all 5 parts of the OGT Test. 1. Chagrin Falls 98.1 2. Oakwood 95.4 3. Ottawa Hills 94.3 4. Indian Hill 93.3 5. Hudson 92.2 6. Mason 91.8 7. Kalida 91.7 8. Aurora 91.4 8. Upper Arlington 91.4 10 Solon 91.1 Though some of the methods are controversial, here are the ohio schools/their ranking that made that top 1000 best public schools in the nation according to NEWSWEEK: Here’s the list of Ohio schools: 68 Indian Hill (Cincinnati) 97 Chagrin Falls (Cleveland) 99 Wyoming (Cincinnati) 136 Solon (Cleveland) 143 Orange (Cleveland) 286 Columbus Alternative (Columbus) 310 Shaker Heights (Cleveland) 347 Beachwood (Cleveland) 366 Oakwood (Dayton) 398 Olentangy (Columbus) 463 Aurora (Cleveland) 706 Madeira (Cincinnati) 725 Ottawa Hills (Toledo) 729 Firestone (Akron) 777 Bexley (Columbus) 830 Upper Arlington (Columbus) 849 Hudson (Akron) 956 Centerville (Dayton) And lastly, here are the elite 17 schools districts of Ohio (schools that have sustained the highest ranking of "excellent" from the state board of education for the past 6 years.) Alphabetically: Beachwood Brecksville Centerville Chagrin Falls Fort Recovery Granville Indian Hill Madeira Mariemont Mason Oakwood Olmsted Falls Revere Solon South Range Westlake Wyoming I found this all quite interesting, and I thought maybe someone else may as well!
  6. from the dayton business journal 5/24/06 The city of Dayton is on track to meet its 2006 budget goals as of last month, but faces some obstacles for the remainder of the year, officials said at the city's monthly finance update Wednesday morning. Revenue is 1.1 percent ahead of the estimate through April and 2.8 percent higher than the same period last year, the city reported. However, city officials are concerned that continued job losses may impact the 2007 budget and beyond. They also said that overtime expenditures should have been lower this year because the area experienced milder weather, but spending in that category was flat. In its downtown development update this morning, the city noted its efforts to retain four corporate tenants that occupy the MeadWestvaco building at the intersection of Second and Main streets. Tenants MeadWestvaco Consumer & Office Products, NewPage Corp., Thompson Hine and Deloitte & Touche are considering moving to suburban locations, according to the city. Site decisions are expected by early July. Those businesses and CareSource, another business the city is aiming to retain, provide more than 1,100 jobs and $1.5 million in annual income tax. ***Side note*** this is my personal opinion, but having worked for mead for 3 years, new page and the rest of MWV is going to be out of there like a hot flash! Also, D&T is almost definite, as the only reason they were in the mead tower was b/c when mead was mead...they used D&T for pretty much all accounting/auditing practices. when mead merged, they dropped D&T so they really have no incentive to stay in the MWV tower....so by 2007, that tower may be completely empty....which is really sad b/c less than 2 years ago it was 100% occupied. Mead was having to lease space in another tower...so I hope the Dayton leaders can figure something out. Someone should find John Luke Jr. and bitch slap him ;-)
  7. Oh my god!! thank you for the wonderful flashback! I studied abroad about 10 years ago in Reynosa and Monterray. WOW.....thanks for the nostalgia! :-D
  8. Okay, so excuse my ignorance here, but since Ken Blackwell is Sec of State won't he be counting the votes for his own election for Governor? Isn't there some law in place that should prohibit this?? I just find it really odd that there would be no checks and balances in place? Any insight would be greatly appreciated!
  9. the mead/westvaco merger was the worst thing to happen to downtown dayton. mead's ceo got a golden parachute and then john luke the westvaco ceo got complete control of both companies, and has made no qualms about moving the entire operation back to richmond, va. (which he has) wait...maybe this is the second worst thing to happen to dayton, with rhine mclin being the worst thing to happen. I just don't have any clue how they are going to fill up that tower with tenants? It's sad b/c 3 years ago when I worked there, that tower was filled to capacity.
  10. I have indeed flown from dayton to cincy...not for pleasure though. I had a connecting flight outta the cincy airport....it was one of the worst flights ever...b/c the plane never gets high enough or to a decent crusing speed b/c of the close proximity....the flight is pretty much all turbulance. But it was a quick flight...I think it was somewhere around 21 minutes, but I'm not sure...it's been a couple of years.
  11. Yellow Springs is probably one of the best towns ever...anywhere. Very Progressive..hippish. I love it there....you are free to be yourself there and no one will judge you for it. Plus Glen Helen is an awesome place to hike...and the bike path is great too. If you get tired of that, they have a great little downtown with unique shops and cafes....it's a quick 20-30 minute drive from Dayton.
  12. I've always been a fan of both Taylorsville and Carriage Hill...they're only maybe 5-7 minute apart from each other...and if you want to drive another couple miles, you can check out Charleston Falls
  13. I can see my Window!!! not really it faces the back over looking old river park....however for those interesed a position as an inside sales consultant just opened in my division so if you are looking or know someone who is looking for a job, let me know. Usually a college degree and sales experience is needed.
  14. I worked for 3 years at Mead/MeadWestvaco in the Fine Papers Divison and left right before they got sold off and became NewPage. You heard it here first....they will RUN out of downtown when their lease is up. I would look for them to land somewhere near the Dayton Mall area. You can thank a gentleman by the name of Ray Finan for that (he's a good ol' Westvaco boy) and has done nothing but complain about downtown since the 2 companies merged. Also, I wouldn't be all that shocked to see NewPage bought again, as it has been managed SO poorly..It's hard to run and be an efficient company with incompetent people.
  15. I think everyone is making it into a pissing contest as to which city will claim what is in the middle, which from my stand point is a fatal mistake. Both cities need to work together and with the middle cities to create a strong functional area...b/c as one super region/metro area/whatever, they can reap the benefits of having such a large scale of talent and people. and the $$$$ that goes along with it. Thanks for the welcome PigBoy....love your photos by the way! It's nice to see another Daytonian. I'll be in Wisconsin for Business in May. Thought it'll be in the itty-bity town of Viroqua. mapquest that! ;-)
  16. Pigboy, I live in Oakwood, just a hair south of Dayton. I have worked in both downtown Dayton and Cincy while living in the Dayton area. as for where I think the cin-day border is....I'm going with MIDDLEtown...ironic huh? ;-) I think when the 2 areas combine I think CIN-DAY is going to be a great thing for the people In the middletown, west chester, mason, lebanon area....etc. etc. I think right now they identify with one or the other, but really don't know where they belong. I think when and if CIN-DAY gets the attention it should, there will be a day when someone asks a person who may live in West Chester: Where are you from? and they can say Cin-Day and the other person will know..oh yeah, they must live right between dayton and cincy...without the person from WC having to tell the person that; "oh west chester is a community that is between cincy and dayton. I work in cincy and my wife/husband works in dayton, though geographically we are closer to cincy, the work commute is faster to dayton...etc. etc. I'm hoping when people say they are from CIN-DAY people will gather the above info....b/c people in dayton and cincy are always going to say they are from their respective cities...I think CIN-DAY is going to finally give an identity to those people in the middle. ...rant over!! ;-)
  17. Alot of people don't understand another huge benefit from it. Federal wages would go higher and we would get more Federal money for things like transportation which is BADLY needed. This is EXACTLY why I'm hoping it happens in 2010. I think if the 2 cities do become one region and still keep their own identities it could be SO beneficial to the area. Hell, maybe we'd get some federal money to build a high speed or even light rail transit system between the 2 and then you've tapped into over 3 million people's talents and skills that could greatly make this area amazing with easy quick access from one city to the other. That's just my thoughts though! ;-)
  18. SO do you think it'll be fully connected? and if so, when? best guess of course :-)I know Ryan Homes is moving into areas like Franklin and Middleton, throwing up homes like crazy!
  19. I guess only time will tell. should be interesting come 2010. I wonder what the vegas odds would be??!?!
  20. As unusual fire pointed out, if the UA is connected, the employement interchange measure becomes a moot point. By 2010, I think the UA will be completely connected. You can thank all of the developers along I-75 in warren and butler couonties for that! so my best guess is that 2010 it becomes one csa...with jeebus as the middle point.
  21. This is exactly why Cincy and Dayton...CIN-DAY is going to become one metro area, it seems like every person I run into says they decided to move to Mason, West Chester, Lebanon...etc. etc. B/C they work in Dayton and their wife or husband work in Cincy. It splits the commute equally for each person. Also, we SOOOOO need to get a light rail/high speed transit system between the 2 cities. It would have such a huge economic impact.
  22. WOW! it's almost completely connected in that diagram from 2000. I'm sure it's filled in a bit more in the last 6 years....should be interesting to see what it looks like now or in 2010.
  23. How is the UA classified? UA meaning Urbanized area...right? I can't drive down 75 from Dayton to Cincy without seeing a huge housing/industry boom. The areas in warren and butler counites along 75 are getting developed so quickly, it's out of control.
  24. okay, so here's a silly question...that may be ignorant...but I'm going to ask it anyway ;-) With the change to the census on how MSA are accounted for, what does this mean for CIN-DAY? Come 2010 will CIN-DAY happen or are the numbers not there, b/c of the new classificaiton?
