Electric Cars
Batteries that have degraded to the point that they no longer provide enough range for vehicles are still usable. This is one instance of using early generation Nissan Leaf batteries to improve grid reliability: Battery technology is also improving to the point that batteries will hopefully not need to be replaced nearly as often. LFP batteries are supposed to be able to withstand tons and tons of cycles with minimal degradation. Also, battery recycling is picking up steam. Although usable capacity may decrease over time, the raw materials of the battery (like lithium) are still reusable. Redwood Materials is probably the biggest name in battery recycling. There are also incentives in the Inflation Reduction Act to encourage battery recycling, which will probably give it a bit of a boost

Ohio: General Business & Economic News
Ohio is really making a name for itself in the EV industry. Hopefully, that will have a snowball effect going forward. Besides this announcement, there's the GM Ultium battery plant in Lordstown, The Foxconn factory in Lordstown where the Fisker Pear assembly is planned, The Jeep Wrangler PHEV is assembled in Toledo, and Ford is supposed to start assembling commercial EV's in Avon Lake. With increasing incentives for EV carmakers to manufacture in North America, and an experienced workforce in the automotive industry, hopefully Ohio is poised to keep up this momentum.

2022 U.S. Senate Race
I’ve noticed Tim Ryan dunking on Vance in the same vein as Fetterman vs Oz in PA lately. It seems to be working well for Fetterman, so hopefully Ryan can gain some support by casting Vance as an outsider that doesn’t know Ohio.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
That would not be allowed in the NBA. The max contract length is 4 years, and the NBA has handed out big penalties for circumventing the salary cap. If they don’t put anything into writing (and have it discovered), it does seem like it would be hard to prevent the Cavs from telling LeBron he can get a good deal on minority ownership after he retires.

Cleveland: Cleveland Clinic Developments (Non-University Circle)
There actually are still competing connectors. Almost all new EV’s use CCS connectors, which allow for AC charging or DC fast charging. Tesla has its own connector, however, and currently non-Teslas can’t charge at Tesla DC supercharger, and they need an adapter to charge at Tesla 240V destination chargers. CCS seems likely to win out relatively quickly however. Europe already requires Tesla to use CCS and it sounds like they’re going to add adapters to their US stations in the coming years. I believe Teslas have adapters to charge with CCS, so it’s the obvious standard to win out. Both if these plug types are unique and need an intermediary between the vehicle and the wall. EV Service Equipment (EVSE) is a box that plugs into the 120V or 240V (typically NEMA 14-50) outlet and has a CCS Or Tesla connector to plug into the car. These chargers at Cleveland Clinic would most likely be 240V with CCS connectors, which typically provide 20-30 miles of range per hour charging.

Amtrak & Federal: Passenger Rail News
If it’s not obvious (and judging by the replies, a ton of people missed it 😂), each of these lines connects the cities within an NCAA conference.

Suburban Cleveland: Development and News
I saw some geotechnical drilling on this site as I drove by, so I looked into it some more. 70 townhomes are planned for the north end of Berea on a portion of the land the city has owned for a while now seeking a sort of transformative project.

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
I thought this idea was kind of crazy at first, but the more I think about, the more I like the potential if the Hassan’s and the city got creative with it. Assuming they could just open up both ends of the stadium to allow pedestrians to pass through when it’s not in use, there’s a built-in supply of concessionaires that could operate daily instead of 10 times per year. There could be tables for dining where the field usually is so people could stop to eat while crossing the land bridge. Since the stadium has a retractable roof, the land bridge would as well. It also would make a lot more sense for the public to help finance if it will be able to use it daily. This location would also be pretty much adjacent to the convention center, which would be helpful for attracting events that need a lot of space.

Cleveland: Flats Developments (Non-Stonebridge or FEB)
Has this park been talked about before? I’m not really sure where it could go on the West Bank. Could this be what they’re calling a potential park on the viaduct?

Cleveland: Downtown: Sherwin-Williams Headquarters
@KJPdidn’t Sherwin-Williams agree to donate the Breen property to the city of Cleveland? Is the city involved in this deal or did Sherwin-Williams change its mind?

Ohio Solar Power Thread
I’m hoping to add solar this year, and I’ve been looking into it for the past few years. I’d recommend Solar United Neighbors or some other co-op. I priced it out last year myself and through the co-op and it was a little cheaper. While net metering rules might get worse, I feel like there’s bound to be some sort of time-of-use or demand response electric rates in the future that would benefit those with solar + battery or EV with V2G.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
I went to the game on Friday against Denver, which played out very similarly (though against much better competition). The atmosphere in the 4th and OT was very impressive. I hadn’t been to a game since pre-pandemic and had no idea what to expect, but it was outstanding.

Electric Cars
https://insideevs.com/news/567629/fisker-pear-reservations-open/ Reservations opening today for the 2024 Fisker PEAR, with a $29,900 starting price before incentives. It’s planned to be produced by Foxconn in Lordstown, starting at 250k vehicles per year. Fisker hasn’t delivered any cars of any kind yet so take all of that with a grain of salt, but it at least seems to be trying to make EV’s affordable, which is appreciated, even if it’s probably not ideal for the company’s profitability.

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
I don't think I've seen this posted yet. NOACA seems to be leading an impact study for the potential land bridge. They're looking at 5 concepts: A. No major improvements/changes B. Land bridge + remove Shoreway entirely to maximize development space C. Land bridge + convert Shoreway and Marginal/Erieside into a single boulevard D. Same as C + adding a connection at E 18th St. E. Land bridge only More info on each concept starting at page 51 in the agenda for their meeting coming up this week: https://www.noaca.org/home/showpublisheddocument/27406/637783924624587362

I think it all goes to Brook Park. I work at NASA Glenn and I’ve always only paid taxes to Brook Park.

Cleveland: Flats Developments (Non-Stonebridge or FEB)
I couldn’t find anything on the Catanese property, but I did find this update on the Flats Industrial Railroad in their October meeting minutes. They say there is a purchase agreement, but they’re applying for a grant. Also, they’re going to break off a small part of the Flats property to re-sell.

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
I posted this image a few weeks ago, but the riverfront boardwalk/trail is definitely part of the plan.

Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad
Saguaro National Park is even closer to the city of Tucson than Cuyahoga Valley is to Cleveland. Gateway Arch is now a national park for some reason and it's right in the city of St. Louis. Miami is close to Everglades and Biscayne National Parks. Part of Indiana Dunes National Park is in the city of Gary, IN and there's rail nearby the entire park. I'm guessing the intent of the partnership to increase access is to address parks like Rocky Mountain and Glacier that are super crowded and car-dominated, but hopefully Ohio can get something out of it too. I suspect you're right that Cuyahoga Valley's designation was elevated because we didn't have any national parks. The same thing happened in the last couple years with Indiana Dunes and New River Gorge in West Virginia. Those states wanted to boost tourism and it's a very effective way to attract visitors.

Cleveland: Flats Developments (Non-Stonebridge or FEB)
The Metroparks has an agreement to purchase the surface parking lot next to Collision Bend on Old River Rd. to make it public greenspace and hopefully eventually realize a riverfront pedestrian walkway along the riverfront throughout the Flats. From page 111 of the 11/18 Agenda here: https://www.clevelandmetroparks.com/about/cleveland-metroparks-organization/board-of-park-commissioners/board-meeting-archives Their map showing the property location is interesting. They're a lot closer to being able to start on the riverfront walkway than I thought. I'm not sure how they'd deal with the active businesses on Old River, but besides those it looks like the Graincraft property is all that's missing to be able to connect Rivergate to FEB. It also looks like they're planning to eventually extend the Red Line Greenway across the river, which seems like it would be a big undertaking, but very beneficial if there's improved bike/pedestrian infrastructure in the Flats.

Electric Cars
I just ordered my first BEV (Mustang Mach-E). I still have an ICE car if I want to go on a road trip that doesn’t have convenient charging, but the Mach-E has enough range for Cleveland to Dayton, so it’ll cover all but one or two trips a year at least. Hopefully by the time my ICE needs replacing, there will be enough charging infrastructure that I can get another BEV, but I’m not confident that’ll happen. I’m not sure about other models, but for the Mach-E if you’re willing to wait a few months, you can order one online and typically avoid paying over MSRP, so maybe that’s something to look into for PHEV’s.

Cleveland: Flats Developments (Non-Stonebridge or FEB)
It looks like Cleveland Metroparks has some plans for the Columbus Peninsula that I hadn't heard about before. They're hoping to buy the Catanese property along the river and turn it into an expansion of Rivergate Park. They're also looking to acquire land from the Flats Industrial Railroad for more greenspace and trail connections. Looking at their maps of the proposed expansions, it makes me wonder if they're trying to turn the whole western half of the peninsula into one big park space, which would be kind of awesome. Source is the agenda for their board of commissioners meeting from yesterday: https://www.clevelandmetroparks.com/getmedia/1777bb5a-82e2-4199-86f2-c34f07e28edb/8-19-21-AGENDA.pdf

Cleveland: NASA Glenn Research Center News & Info
Al was totally right that a lot of Clevelanders don’t even know about NASA Glenn, which is such a shame. That was a great segment for highlighting some of the important work that’s done there.
