Cleveland: Cleveland State University: Development and News
That would be the most interesting project a Cleveland firm has done in quite some time if it is built. The lengthened horizontality works well when considered in relation to the movement of the Euclid Corridor vehicles.

Cleveland: Bob Stark Warehouse District Project
I work for a firm that worked on this project and it is a marvel of retail development. There is a BART (Bay Area Regional Transit Authority) stop in the lower level of the building, department store connected, and located in the middle of the city. Sounds familiar...

Great, more money shoveled over to a worthless suburb.

This bridge type selection is the best possible scenario in an overall ill conceived project like it or not.

Cleveland: Cuyahoga County Gov't properties disposition (non-Ameritrust)
And they've already spent $28 million and haven't done anything yet. Tearing down that building, along with the 13 story building on Euclid for the absolute embarresments that have so far been presented is an attrocity (sp). You're right, who is advising these morons. The Breuer building may not be the most graceful, but it's proportions deal with the scale of the rotunda perfectly when viewed from Euclid Avenue. This is a huge mistake, economically and aesthetically, and we will be regretting this for years to come.

Hopefully they aren't going crazy with that gold color. I think it looks a bit odd. Those pictures are awesome though.

Best Ice Cream in Ohio
Mickey's Dairy Treat on East 185th Street has this stuff called fruit whip, which is basically soft serve sherbert. It rotates between 12 different flavors. It is freaking ridiculous as proof of my several dozen trips there this summer from Ohio City. Check it out.

Nobody ever said that Gwathmey still gets jobs because of his New York Five connection. All the selection of Gwathmey ensures us, is the fact that at best we will get an uninspiring project sitting at a prominent location on Euclid Avenue, and at worse we will get a heaping piece of dog shit like you see in The East Village. Also, why shouldn't architects think of ways to reinvent public spaces? Going into projects with a preconceived idea of what should be there based on other projects in other cities, is a dangerous move. And, just because you’re afraid to go out on a limb and be critical of what is going on in our city, doesn’t mean the rest of us are. But we’ll just wait until next year for you to have an opinion about this project. We're all holding our breaths...

Wow, what a piece of garbage. No connection to the urban fabric around it. I'd say typical modernist, but that monstrosity is a juxtaposition of about eight different "styles" (style: not something to be proud of in architecture). Postmodernism meets International style meets modernism meets whatever that piece of shit is at the base, (is that E.I.F.S. on there?) What an embarrassment. Hopefully he doesn't get that flamboyant for the student center. I'm a bit scared now.

I kinda like some grime on the buildings. But not on the Terminal Tower.

It's not neccessarily critisism, it's just stating the simple fact is that Gwathmey has done nothing progressive since his "New York Five Days" (late 60's early 70's group of NYC young architects, Richard Meyer, Gwathmey, Michael Graves, and I can't think of the other two). Generally, firms don't suddenly become something they aren't overnight, especially with a tight budget. Which by the way doesn't mean a cutting edge, progressive design solution isn't possible.

I would love to submit a proposal for the new Cleveland State University Student Center. One problem: NOBODY EVER HAS AN OPEN COMPETITION FOR ANYTHING IN THIS CITY! That fact alone has made the overall representation of contemporary architecture in this city basically nonexistent besides the Frank Gehry building. Rock Hall was designed by an architect way past his prime (the most interesting part of the building is the west façade which happened by accident), and the County Building proposal can hardly be considered a competition (it’s actually illegal for the County to have a truly open competition). Based on CSU’s selection of Gwathmey as the architect for the student union, and looking at previous work by this firm and their reputation in architectural circles, I’m not as excited about this project as if it were being designed by more progressive architects. We have enough static, modernist buildings in this city and I don’t think their approach to urban design will capture the energy and movement of this site (Euclid Corridor speeding towards downtown or UC, active pedestrian life, dense urban landscape, etc). Open this city up to design competitions and you will see a marked rise in the level of architecture.

Gwathmey is a B+ architect at best.

Cleveland: Random Development and News
It was partially lit for 3 days for the RNC visitors and now it isn't. Their actions lead me to conclude: they only light up the building to make the skyline look good when they stand to make money (they sponsered getting the RNC to visit Cleveland) and not nightly when average citizens can enjoy it. I'm not trying to make a big deal out of a partially lit building (really in the grand scheme of life it doesn't mean much), but it is part of an accumulating pile of bullshit that FC throws on Cleveland on a dayly basis. That's my opinion, regardless of whether or not I have quotes or video footage to back it up.

Apparently Forest City doesn't give a damn about the average Clevelander and choses not to light up the city's symbol. I just don't get it.

The very top of the Terminal Tower looks to have been completed. Some of the scaffolding has been removed already. Now hurry up with the rest of it, I want that thing lit up again in the night skyline.

Cleveland: Will law firm's expansion lead to new office construction downtown?
I've heard from someone with knowledge of the proposal that said the proposed design of the Forest City plan was extremely poor. Now I'm sure that may not have been the only problem in the proposal, but I'm sure it didn't help.

Cleveland: Downtown Office Buildings Updates
I agree with DaninDC. Building a 15-20 story building would be a better option both economically and visually. The Terminal Tower should be able to breath in the skyline. The damn courthouse has blocked enough views with its bloated dimensions when viewed from the Detroit-Superior bridge.

Cleveland: Confronting Decline in an American City (new PBS documentary)
Maybe dregs of society is a bit harsh. They have basically been brainwashed into thinking that is urbanism by someone. I just don't see how anyone can accept that Disneyland mentality for a living environment.

Cleveland: Confronting Decline in an American City (new PBS documentary)
I for one was queezy throughout the entire program having all of our problems spread out on our laps for the whole country to see, but after sleeping on it, I think it’s like admitting you’ve hit rock bottom as a drug addict. Almost liberating. Maybe this will start a dialogue in the region about the fact that this city is worth getting behind the momentum that all of us here at UO already realize. I hate people that live in Crocker Park by the way, they are the dregs of society. SuiteLife has a good selection of mens’ clothing, but it’s a bit pricey. The guys that own the place are fashion designers and have their own line they sell there among others. I bought a coat there last year and I must say it kicks ace.

Cleveland: Ohio City: Development and News
It's an interesting place. I went in there looking for architecture books (poor selection), when I walked in, a cat was watching a man playing a fiddle. The man continued until I walked to the door to leave, when he looked at me and said, "Nothing like an old fiddle tune I always say." "Welp, see you later," I said. Interesting place.

Just to let you know, the Dillard's in Downtown Toledo will be closing because of the Dillard's at Fallen Timbers. Suburban sprawl, it's faaaantastic...
