Ohio: Casino / Gaming Discussion
I'm somewhat numb to the social ills that could be created by putting casinos in downtowns across the state, and would possibly not care at all about these developments if they weren't inherently damaging to the surrounding neighborhood due to their massiveness, general tackiness, and poor engagement with the adjacent urban fabric. I just imagine these huge EIFS clad towers with gold mirrored glass, fake roman sculptures, and laser light shows for the kiddies. If they were smaller and could seemlessly fit into existing neighborhoods (sans massive parking decks) they could be somewhat interesting additions to the city. But I guess partonizing to the lowest common denominator, and almost in a way making it family friendly (disturbing) is a must with casinos. Just wish this kind of thing could have a higher level of sophistication. However, another thing to think about is what is all the tax money that would be generated by the casinos be used for? I've heard schools, but what about supporting local and state public transit systems?

Not sure if anyone has noticed this one, but Cleveland is the topic of one of those Sprint 4G network commercials. It's the one about the people getting revised meeting agendas and they then show a MapQuest map of Cleveland, then show the car the people traveling under a freeway sign saying "Cleveland" with heavy metal playing in reference apparently to the Rock Hall.

When buildings are continually torn down the city losses the very thing that makes it interesting.

Cleveland: Cuyahoga County Gov't properties disposition (non-Ameritrust)
Simply saying that a certain program doesn't fit into a certain building is misleading. I really don't see what the difference would be between redoing the Old Arcade for a hotel and turning the Huntington Building into a hotel. Not saying that's the best use for Huntington, but the thing is 1.6 million square feet and could take on any number of programs thrown at it. Hotel, office, condo, apartments, museum, casino, etc. Really, it will take a plan of many different uses to get it full.

Cleveland: Midtown: Development and News
All of the above. It's basically the same attitude that pushed the demolition of the Warehouse in the 70's, Prospect around East 4th and then around East 14th: not recognizing the value and potential of existing structures and demolishing them for lesser "usage." It's funny that you talk about the robustness of a neighborhood and economy, but one could argue if they didn't have this obsession of demo to begin since the 1960's, this structure and neighborhood may have had a chance to add to both the neighborhood and economy. Now we simply saying this attitude should continue because we'ev torn down everything else that was worthwhile. Great short sighed theory that shows there is no citywide agenda when it comes to dealing with this common situation. The only question is what's the next one to come down? And the idea of a central park? Please. Central to what? Open pastures and suburban style industrial park buildings? I'd rather not.

That's the kind of short sighted view that has plagued this city. It's not hard to image this bohemoth as part larger rethinking of this area. Apparently for some it is...

Do you know how much petroleum it takes to grow vegetables? Maybe Greenhouse's intent is to be the most efficient and environmentally conscious restaurant it can be. That's really all this garbage about being "green" is about: being efficient, taking what you need, and using what you take. Anything more than this is just masturbation. If you really want to be "green" and "sustainable," the best thing one can do is jump off a cliff. Nothing more inefficient than a living human being.

Northeast Ohio: Regionalism News & Discussion
I find it to be more than a coincidence that when Cleveland proper was successful, the region was successful. Gramarye, I doubt there is a single person on this board, or even more than a few people concerned any further than property values in their current suburb that would ever give a damn about Mayfield Village. If Mayfield Village, Solon, or any other number of exurbs just disappeared this world would be no worse off.

Also, there are Amish laborers working in the Vivo space and white cloth is covering the windows. Looks like something's moving in there too. If that burrito place is open late night on W25th they's make a killing from all the bar patrons and night owls.
