Cleveland: Downtown: Euclid & 9th Tower / Schofield Building Redevelopment
Also, according to the book "Cleveland Landmarks," before the 14 story building was constructed 1902, a hotel nicknamed "Mrs. Schofield's Boarding House," was at the SW corner of E9th and Euclid and was razed for the tower.

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
Don't get defensive, I'm trying to have a conversation. I agree with all your points above, however, this is something that is trying to be sold to a general public that is fed up with subsidizing everything from healthcare to food stamps. The way you're stating it is that it's adding to that burden. I'm as excited about the prospects of 3C as you are, but that excitement has nothing to do with my grandma getting to the hospital for treatment. It stems from the access to their state and region that everybody will enjoy, more people becoming involved in the dialogue of cities being important parts of what makes society work. I just think that starting off with the points that relate to business and tourism development would be something people could get behind because of it's ability to create wealth and improve the economies of any given city.

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
KJP, I have no doubt of the info's relation to all people eventually (personally I'd rather live out my younger years zipping across Ohio and the nation by rail), but I disagree that the first point of arguement should be so inherently negative, and hitching the idea to providing options for low income residents. In itself, I'm not sure how relavent job access is to lower income people to the 3C rail proposal, new innercity travel options perhaps, but not so much intercity. I don't see many janitors living in Columbus and commuting to Cleveland. We may just have to agree to disagree though. Keep up the good fight.

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
Say what you will about Zaha Hadid's design of individual buildings (X), this project in Spain has a density that I think we should be shooting for. A quick look at the street widths in the port's plan reveal avenues that are simply too wide. Tight streets, something this city is not known for, should be part of an all encompassing idea of creating greater density, and then release to the vista of the lakefront.

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
It's bothersome that they only looked at their own projects for precedence... And while they're analysis with the shifted grid to block winds is interested, they seen to have ignored it in the final solution in this design phase. Also, while this clearly wasn't in their scope, the transition from the city to the lakefront is really the problem that needs to be addressed. A lakefront plan that ignores or is afraid to tackle that issue isn't looking at the big picture, in my opinion.

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
"Ohio faces a serious and worsening mobility crisis in which a large and growing number of Ohioans are either too old or too poor to effectively provide for their own transportation to work, school, medical care, shopping, tourism and to visit friends and family. In the absence of transportation choices, this restrains Ohio’s economy, causes poverty/isolation and hurts Ohio’s quality of life." This quote really bothers me. It's no wonder many people are against putting money into passenger rail if it's supposed to help only poor and old people. Why isn't it put in the context of adding transit options for young people who have learned the advantages of rail transport from visits to Europe and Asia, ontop of the advantages for people in other stratas of income? Instead it's being thrown into the bin of social welfare? What a terrible idea.

Man, I bet everyone is glad they torn that building down...

Cleveland: The Residences at 668 Euclid Avenue
Nice project, but what about making it something more than just another grey facade. We've got all these old structures, how do we maximize their impact on the street and aesthetic of the city? Just a thought.

Found this on the Design Review docet. Looks like One Cleveland Center at the SE corner of St. Clair and East Ninth will be getting a new plaza layout and entry canopy.

The visual arts center has basically been scrapped because CSU is renovating the Allen Theatre for their use.

Cleveland: Downtown: Euclid & 9th Tower / Schofield Building Redevelopment
^Ya see! This is the exact same arguement as to why the Breuer Tower should not be torn down because untrained politicians/citizens deem something as "ugly" (thankfully it hasn't, to this point at least). Tastes change, and adapting to the flavor of the general public through the years is a study in futility.

Cleveland: Downtown: Euclid & 9th Tower / Schofield Building Redevelopment
I really like the color of the brick when it's stained with soot (30 year old soot at that). Makes the building look like it was cast out of one material.

Cleveland: Downtown: Euclid & 9th Tower / Schofield Building Redevelopment
Some progress today on facade. There are some really nice column and brick detailing being revealed. This thing will be something when it's complete.

Cleveland: Demolition Watch
So for demoing 2 buildings within a block of eachother, all we're getting for the foreseeable future are empty space and a less full streetscape. I'd rather see an intact vacant building than another needless park or parking lot (obvious). CSU's development plan for breaking up the block is also suspect in my opinion.

Why Euclid Avenue isn't the center of the so called development is a question. And MORE park space? 2/3 of the north side of Euclid is worthless tree lawns that people already don't use. Another part of the fabric gets tossed away. As to the worthlessness of the building itself Mc, I was just in Toronto a couple weeks ago, and many of the buildings along Yonge Street that house retail spaces are in worse shape than the Best Gyro building. The demolition of this city continues on. How utterly pointless.

Looking for downtown vacancy rates for apartments. I know it's less than 10%, but I'm looking for the real statistics from an actual source (website, newspaper article, census). Anybody know where I can find this info?
