  1. Typical NYer thinking their sh!t doesn't stink. I could do without people like that. And especially the people showing them around Cleveland. Hudson?, and bragging about lifestyle center(s)? They should be ashamed of themselves.
  2. The fact is, this industry has been in the crapper for decades. If this region hasn't figured out that we shouldn't be depending on the auto industry by now, I hate to say it, but it's really our own fault.
  3. The sound is exactly that of a delivery truck moving in reverse. This sound really is ridiculous and honestly makes me want take the extra time to walk to the rapid. Extremely annoying onboard as well.
  4. It really is important to rehab the eyesore that was 668. I have a hard time imagining any bigger developments happening in that stretch of Euclid if that facade was still in sh!t shape. I just hope these bribery allegations that K&D might have to deal with don't affect this project. One thing that does concern me though is what in the hell are they going to do with the 15 foot wide 1 story "building" that is attached to the Colonial Arcade. It really does look horrible and I wonder why it wasn't demolished along with the Dollar Bank Building.
  5. Good point about the barrierless seating. It really is unfortunate that we think it's necessary here in the US. It's so much better to see seats spilling into the piazzas and open spaces in European cities. I'm surprised East fourth hasn't tried to create an open container ordinance for the whole street. They do it in Erie PA, would be cool to see it happen here.
  6. Suprisingly the massing does not look totally horrible, which is what I expect of City Arch. It's also unfortunate that RTA has taken a step back in terms of who is designing their Rapid stations. I guess this is an opportunity for Volpe to utilize his "contemporary style" motif.
  7. I heard about this a couple weeks ago and forgot about it. This is great news.
  8. Shouldn't other politicians be calling out Patton instead of every citizen that has the time and patience to send countless emails or letters?
  9. I would take a look at what Oberlin has done as an example of a successful Ohio small town. Vibrant local shops, restaurants, and movie theater. Obviously the existence of an extremely liberal arts school in the center of town helps, but I wouldn't say it is absolutely necessary.
  10. If the mayor wants me to teach him a class on comprehensive urban design I'd be happy to.
  11. I see this Clifton BRT as the first jump into better service into Lakewood. It has a very high ridership in a stable housing stock and will no doubt do well. I hope Detroit is eventually looked at by RTA as an opprtunity for BRT (or light rail) because of its unbounding potential for spinoff development from Ohio City, Detroit Shoreway, W117th, Warren/Detroit, and West End. The Clifton BRT is just an important rise in the quality of service that will probably raise property values and the area's attractiveness to younger residents. This is an area where I think Cleveland's mayor should be coordinating with RTA where to best place new/upgrades in service in conjunction with new developments. Someone at City Hall needs to be coordinating the development of this city. Sadly, I don't believe Frank Jackson has the foresight to arrange these sorts of all encompassing urban intervention.

I find the occurance of a general break down of American social fabric over the past several decades (rampant obesity, school violence, anti-depressent popping soccer moms, etc, etc, etc) and the apex of suburban sprawl, as more than just a coincedence.
  13. I think this outlet idea is ideal because I think they could be considered the first stepping stone to getting mainstream retail back into the center of the city. If national non-outlet stores see that retail does in fact work here they may be willing to set up shop. I think Euclid Avenue would be great for this. I went to the film festival on sunday and there was a gentleman selling old images of Cleveland, and I am telling you, you have to see this guys photos. UNBELIEVABLE. He gets them from CSU/Cleveland Press collection, check him out next saturday or sunday next to the fountains at TC... Anyways, a lot of the activity on Euclid pre-1970 seems to have been created by the discount stores like Woolworth's, W.T. Grant, etc, with Halle's, May's, etc, mixed in between. The outlets idea could be considered a step towards that eventual retail mix. I'm 100% behind this.
  14. "The warehouse District is short on parking." That was a funny quote...
  15. The more I think about this situation the more unhappy I become. People are not going to take the "shuttles" that are provided if they had planned on taking it to the CIFF, they will say hell with RTA and simply drive their cars from the East Side. From what I've heard over the past few years, many of the visitors to the CIFF utilize the Rapid, and this is exactly the demographic that RTA could capitalize on for larger future use of the rail system. Extremely poor timing. And, why can't this work be done when the Rapid is out of commission anyway, 1:00am-5am, over several days or weekends? Jerry, I know this is in no way your fault, and I have no problem with dealing with occasional delays or whatever, but shutting down 2 lines is unacceptable. You are dealt a poor hand in having to deal with announcing these types of things and taking the abuse from just about every direction.
  16. Great timing with the CIFF...
  17. There's enough unused open space on CSU's campus. Whether or not this is because of the low quality of the space or if there aren't enough people interested in populating it, I don't know at this point. If the university needs anything though, without a doubt it's a higher density of different uses at street level, engaging the street and sidewalk, and defining Euclid Avenue as the main focus of the university. Another campus green in addition to the one at the Levin Urban Affairs Building (E18th and Euclid Ave) will do absolutely nothing for campus or city life.
  18. Why, have you been there? Or is this a "perception" call? I'm not going off on you (you tight assed republican) but I want to know how you can make a judgment call without having spent any time there or can say that pre development? I've been in the area a handful of times, and while I wasn't mugged, I certainly didn't feel as safe as I do downtown/near CSU campus. You have to remember, CSU also has its own public safety dept. which would be present around a stadium on campus. You still haven't answered my question. How can you make that judgement decision BEFORE the development is complete. Redeveloping LP, could be the start of transforming the areas image, real and perceived. Why are people not allowed to make educated assumptions? It doesn't take a genius to know that a field for CSU makes sense to be... on their campus. Also, adding this amenity in an already livable part of the city makes more sense than putting it in arguably one of the city's less economically stable neighborhoods. While I certainly believe that the area around E55th Street has totally untapped potential, it really doesn't make sense for CSU to create a field 2 miles from campus. It's like the ridiculous idea that Midtown Corp has for wanting to put a mountain bike park at Euclid and E55. That program just doesn't make sense there.

AMN, we have the same occasional needs for a car: visiting the parents in Mentor. I've been carless for a year now. A challenge at times, but after the first few months you don't really think about it.

This is what there aren't enough of out there; old streetscape photos from the surrounding neighborhoods. I would do anything to walk from Public Square down Broadway back then. Through Downtown, past the bruting steel mills, through the city's second largest concentration of retail (E55th & Broadway) and then to the Harvard/Broadway passenger rail station. How was all of this traded for the parking lagoons and strip malls of the suburbs?
  21. Are you seriously talking about Panera? This place is a dime a dozen and will have little effect on a place like Souper Markt or Dave's in my opinion.
  22. Maybe they should run that 15th cost estimate on MVRDV's scheme now, because this Burt Hill thing is an embarrassment.
  23. Yeah, tearing that building down was a great idea...
  24. After chatting with some others in the know, I might as well come out with it. Uptown project has gotten financing and is looking to break ground in October of this year. We'll see what happens next.
  25. In no particular order... - The strip mall across the street from the West Side Market, including the ridiculous ATM Tower at the actual corner. How dare they think they are "fitting in." - Surface lot on Public Square. - Cleveland Clinic front lawns. - The continued destruction of structures along Euclid.
