RTA seems to be heading in the right direction. Hope they can follow through and make public transport and spaces interact with each other more prominently..

Cleveland: Marketing the City
Getting right in their face in front of the PD would be a great spot. Someone at the paper may even come out onto the city streets to see what is going on. They can't really ignore us there.

"It's so typically Cleveland to get something nice and, then, run it into the ground... isn't that, in part, why the Flats was destroyed?" Dude, chill out. Being critical doesn't drive something into the ground. People dying and thugs are far more negative.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
I must say that the design of the new W117th Street Station scares the hell out of me. It is an urban multimodal transit station, and I couldn't imagine a more inappropriate, neo-traditional, Wendy's restaurant-like composition. Design-wise, regardless of its shabbiness, the old station was far and away a superior structure. RTA should be striving for more compelling stations that exude a sense of contemporary city life, not a clumbsy nostalgic ripoff. I do have hope for the Cedar Hill and E120th/Mayfield stations however...

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
^Maybe RTA needs to start positioning itself to coordinate with developers in creating dense, transit oriented neighborhoods that slow down this moving target. I think the progress that is being made at the E120th/Mayfield Station in terms of building new infrastructure in conjunction with mixed use, should have been going on for the past 30 years. But at least this is a start, and a successful cooperation on that project will hopefully teach RTA what other transit agencies throughout the world already know, mass transit can be the spark of development of urban spaces, instead of simply reacting to it population movements.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
Definetly a duplicate, but I think now that there is an RTA representative officially on the board it will create some interesting conversation, and depending on how rambunctious Mr. Masek is, probably a good arguement or two. Welcome aboard Jerry.

The facade signage is extremely cheaply done. The movie set restaurants for Spiderman were a tad better.

Cleveland: Local Media News & Discussion
So that's all the good news there is in a city that has $2 billion of development in the works? That was honestly the most uninteresting article I've ever read. Thanks Regina Brett. I wonder if she's ever considered focusing on a neighborhood that has had success reinventing itself so others could learn from what they have done to progress. It's not as if there aren't any to chose from; Ohio City, Tremont, Detroit Shoreway, Downtown, etc. Remember Regina, 75% of the residents of the city are not poor.

What got you so damn interested in cities in the first place?
Almost the same as everyone else: Visiting downtown (CLE) and drawing or building what I saw on the kitchen floor, intrest in geography, density, Legos, SimCity2000. But model railroading looks like it's absent from the thread. I got my first set as a 5 year old, probably to eliminate me covering the entire kitchen in blocks, and spanning well into my teenage years. Building all the models of train stations, factories, commercial buildings, etc., and just all the details that are involved in creating the gritty/industrial/transportation based urban scene. A semester abroad in college also helped.

Cleveland: Cuyahoga County Gov't properties disposition (non-Ameritrust)
If you're asking if I polled 1.3 million people to get their opinion on this freaking building, no I didn't. I am creating an overview of converstations I've had with sane county residents and that was their opinion in 90% of the cases. What the hell else do you want. I suppose I could ask the census bureau to get something started but they would only poll 70% of the population.

You obviously weren't at the City Planning Comission meetings. Every opinion was for saving the building and $40,000,000. Not sure how you can argue against the money, and wanting to tear down a 29 story building based on purely subjective ideas on aesthetics. To restate what a collegue of mine said, Cleveland simply doesn't deserve a great building like this. Sad for me to say that, but if people can't appreciate it, it's true.

i think the vast majority of the general "public is looking forward to seeing that building torn down." No.

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
I blamed nobody for anything on this thread. I realize the flaws in the process, I really do, but that is no excuse for public projects. If anything I'm being critical of people in my own field. Architects for the most part are slugs when it comes to design, but for some reason you come out and attack me and and say, "you sure portray in image of ignorance when a firm, team or design does not meet your standards." Hey man, all I do here is express my opinions and expect better results in a time where contemporary architecture and urban design are changing the WORLD and the way people live and interact with space. That's what I expect, and that's what we should all expect. And we very rarely get it. I question why the hell you are bringing this up on this thread, maybe the one thread where I am absolutely in favor of what is going on.

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
Why don't you go ahead and reread my post musky. I think this will be a GOOD project because they chose a designer based on skills, not political connections or a misguided architect selection, and I applaud Frank Jackson for this. Not sure what crawled up your ass, but this isn't the thread to be lecturing me on my negative opinions of local architecture. I'm down for this one. Just because the selection process is flawed into being forced to use the lowest bidder for public projects, that is no excuse for subpar design. If you and CSU want to continue accepting C+ architecture, that's your problem. Not sure why you brought this up here, but the negative side of my opions is recently reserved for the CSU Student Center, we can chat over on that thread if you'd like to continue your thoughts on what you think I should think good design is, and my personal compitency level. Check that, I couldn't give a damn what you think.
