  9. Makeover transforms Argosy $335 million adds glamour, room to casino By Alexander Coolidge • [email protected] • April 2, 2009 Argosy general manager Tony Rodio predicts that his casino will thrive with a bigger venue, a new theme and a new name regardless of the recession. Two weeks after announcing that Argosy would switch its name this summer to Hollywood Casino Lawrenceburg, construction workers are installing signature details on a new barge that casino officials hope will draw new visitors. Workers have erected a dome - a miniature of the Hollywood Bowl, called "Hollywood on the Roof" - that will serve as the backdrop for a stage for some live performances, but will also serve as planetarium-like screen for films or television. Parts of the casino will be decorated with cityscapes meant to look like movie sets. The casino will bombard visitors with imagery on 200 flat-screen TVs and an 80-foot-long and 20-foot-high screen on a serpentine wall cutting across the main gambling floor. 11. Westwood residents take action By Jane Prendergast and Gregory Korte • April 1, 2009 Westwood activists frustrated by a vacant house they said drew drugs and prostitution boarded it up themselves Wednesday – finishing just as a call from a police contact warned them they were trespassing and should leave. Hours before, a city-paid contractor boarded up the house at 2186 Harrison Ave., having been ordered to do so after city officials learned of the activists’ plans and invitiations to the media. But Mary Kuhl and others from Westwood Concern said when they arrived, they found just a small board over a window in the door and two doors padlocked. So they went ahead, using electric screwdrivers to attach the plywood they’d already measured and cut. They finished the doors and windows, painting some of them Elder purple, and cleaning up the yard just as Kuhl’s cell phone rang. 14. With Legacy Place dead in the water and the success of the newly remodeled Plaza just up the road, hopefully some "concrete" plans surface this year about a new and better way to utilize the 26 acre Glenway Crossing area. It isn't completely dead, but has lost 4 major tenents in the past 6 months. Pleeeeeaaaase reconfigure the land occupied by the former Target and Circuit City!!! Make Pep Boys either relocate somewhere else within the center or whatever, just tear all three buildings down and start over!!!!!!! This has looked horrendous since day 1!!!!! Center seeking new direction By Laura Baverman • [email protected] • March 30, 2009 http://news.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/AB/20090330/BIZ01/903300318/ Darkening storefronts in Western Hills' once bustling Glenway Crossing retail corridor have forced Westwood community leaders and real estate brokers to consider a new path for the area's future. Its anchor, a busy but small Target store, moved up Glenway Avenue earlier this month for bigger and better digs in Western Hills Plaza. Turmoil at national retail chains like Circuit City, Steve & Barry's and Cost Plus World Market have left large spaces in several buildings in the retail-heavy section of Glenway Avenue. And the half-vacant 235,000-square-foot Glenway Crossing center has seen a revolving door of tenants in recent years. Click on link for article.
  15. Rezoning approved for 17-year vacant East Price Hill building http://www.building-cincinnati.com/2009/04/rezoning-approved-for-17-year-vacant.html Cincinnati City Council has passed unanimously an ordinance allowing the rezoning of an East Price Hill building that has been vacant for 17 years. The zoning change at 801 Mt. Hope Avenue, from RMX Residential Mixed District to RM-0.7 Residential Multi-Family District, allows owner Incline Place, LLC to restore the building's commercial storefront and to create more than three residential units on the upper floors. The two-family building at 2704-2706 W Eighth Street, also rezoned, will be demolished to create a garage addition for the renovated building. 801 Mt. Hope Avenue, built some time between 1877 and 1892, originally contained ground-floor commercial space and up to eight apartments above. The last redevelopment prospects for the property came in 2002, when new owners announced a plan to rehabilitate it into four condominiums. Those owners sold the property two years later.

  19. Is a 'Nati buzz building? Area's young-adult population rebounds By David Holthaus • [email protected] • March 29, 2009 Hundreds of young professionals gathered last week to network and promote Cincinnati in a spirited cyberbuzz. Hundreds more YPs are expected this fall when the national Next Leaders Summit convenes downtown. Has the region turned hot for bright, young workers? Business leaders are optimistic that a brain drain of talent may finally be slowing. From 2005 to 2007, the number of young adults in the 15-county metropolitan area grew 4 percent, after dropping 13 percent in the previous 15 years. That's a two-year gain of 16,648 young men and women. "We're beginning to slowly, but surely, grow back," says Ellen van der Horst, president and CEO of the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber. States Consider Drug Tests For Needy Recipients Of Food Stamps, Unemployment Benefits And Welfare http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/03/26/national/main4894337.shtml?tag=topHome;topStories (AP) Lawmakers in at least eight U.S. states want recipients of food assistance, unemployment benefits or welfare to submit to random drug testing. The effort comes as more Americans turn to these safety nets to ride out the recession. Poverty and civil liberties advocates fear the strategy could backfire, discouraging some people from seeking financial aid and making already desperate situations worse. Those in favor of the drug tests say they are motivated out of a concern for their constituents' health and ability to put themselves on more solid financial footing once the economy rebounds. But proponents concede they also want to send a message: you don't get something for nothing.
