Cincinnati: Conventions and Tourism News & Info
National convention group beats projected attendance by 10% Business Courier of Cincinnati The U.S. Institute for Theater Technology this week has exceeded its estimated hotel room night consumption by about 10 percent, the Cincinnati USA Convention & Visitors Bureau announced. The group is a nonprofit membership association of people and organizations involved in design and technical aspects of live performing arts and entertainment. Its meeting here runs from March 18 through March 21. The group had originally contracted for 5,058 hotel room nights. But as of March 17, convention attendees have booked 5,560 room nights — 502 more than originally expected. Attendees will be staying at the Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza, Hyatt Regency Cincinnati and the Millennium Hotel. Sessions will take place at the Duke Energy Convention Center and the Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza. Anticipated attendance for the event is 3,800 and brings an estimated economic impact of $1.6 million. Full article at http://cincinnati.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/stories/2009/03/16/daily59.html

Ohio payday lending regulation
I was at a auto repair shop yesterday waiting on my father to drive him home since he was getting his truck worked on. While I was waiting for about 20-25 minutes for him to set things up, I couldn't help but notice the Cash Advance store next door and the traffic that was patronizing this business within that time frame. Out of the 12 vehicles that pulled up, 9 had temporary license plates of which 6 were newer ('06 or newer) SUV's. Just an observation! I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but it amazes me to no end what people consider and value as priorities in life.

Ohio Education / School Funding Discussion
To each is their own! Their are alot of people who have that "Keeping up with the Jones!" mentality in this area. (I'm not saying you do Dan, but it does exist in large numbers over here.) I could afford to get a 250K house yet I choose not too, for personal reasons. "That is an attitude I find pervasive on UO, that others can decide how you should live." It's not just people on UO! http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,18716.0.html http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/us/2009/03/18/rich.getting.food.stamps.wlwt

Ohio Education / School Funding Discussion
^^I'd agree with you for the most part Dan except it's education. (Personally, I believe if we are able to throw BILLIONS AT WALL STREET, then EVERY school across this country should be taken care of by the govt as well!!!) anyway, back to reality. We as a community have to take responsibility for our kids and our neighbors kids too. Sometimes, the public only sees an increase in taxes AND THAT IS IT! They don't visualize what the benefits would be for their property values or hell, even the kids in their neighborhood. Three Rivers School District has been trying to build new schools by trying to pass levies for the better part of a decade now. Every time, they fail!! Many residents within that district (similar to Oak Hills) send their kids to Catholic schools. Others have half million dollar homes and don't want to see their taxes increase by several thousand dollars a year. (Another example of not living within their means.) One thing that Green Twp. residents of Oak Hills can enjoy is one of the LOWEST TAX rates in Ham. Cty. I pay roughly $1100 a year on an $85K house. I'd venture to bet 700-800 of that goes to the schools. Now, for those people who feel they need 3500sf or more and a 4-500K mortgage.........well they are probably pushing 6-7k on taxes and along with that.... a definite NO VOTE on ANY NEW TAX LEVY PROPOSED regardless if the schools actually needs it or not. People's ignorant decisions, lifestyles, beliefs, etc. tend to cloud their judgement come election time! The school districts and ultimately the kids suffer as a result. As Randy says, the taxes rise and fall with property values so what's unfair about that? I still believe Dusty is just bitter for personal reasons!

Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine: Development and News
"Proportion travesty" is what WAS at this site prior to this building! It's all a matter of individual opinion. I didn't like the original renderings, so this is a pleasant surprise to me. The final product has inched it's way up my "Awesomeness Chart"

Dusty has taken this way too personal! The extremely high reputation and results of this public school district has kept many homes property values within Delhi & Green Twp. from loosing much if any through this recession. As one of those taxpayers and someone who has campaigned for two levies over the years, I commend Oak Hills for their efforts to keep the district as one of the top performing in the state.

Rethinking Transport in the USA
$8 billion could help revive travel by train http://www.usatoday.com/travel/news/2009-03-16-high-speed-rail-travel_N.htm Americans started falling out of love with trains 50 years ago, when thrilling silver airliners left locomotives far behind. Now, President Obama and leaders in more than 30 states say it's time to embrace trains again but newer, faster ones that can transport passengers past gridlocked airports and highways on electrified railroads at up to 200 mph. They're betting billions of federal and state dollars that high-speed railroads can someday move travelers between major U.S. cities within two or three hours just as they do in Western Europe and Japan. And along the way, they argue, such systems can ease travel congestion, reduce the nation's dependence on oil, cut pollution and create jobs. .............

Miami Twp. plans $5 million project By Jennie Key [email protected] Residents in Miami Township can look forward to a new township center by the end of next year. Trustees have hired Michael Schuster Associates to design a new community center and fire station complex to replace the station and community center at Shady Lane and Bridgetown Road. The project, on about 7.5 acres, will also include a new ball field and a walking trail around the perimeter. Miami Township Trustee Paul Beck said the complex will cost about $5 million, and will be paid for using Tax Increment Finance money. Miami Township adopted a blanket TIF resolution in 1996, Beck said, which has allowed the township to pay for a number of projects, including the new roof on the senior center, a $500,000 expansion of the Mount Nebo Road fire station, a $300,000 maintenance building and the purchase of 34 acres on East Miami River Road for future park development. Hamilton County: This is Cheviot! "The Capital of the Westside!"
Letter about traffic signal not correct http://communitypress.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/C2/20090313/VAV03/903130357/ I would like to respond to a letter to the editor in the March 11 edition of the Western Hills Press titled "Traffic light needed" regarding the proposed removal of the traffic signal at the intersection of Harrison and Lovell Avenues in Cheviot. In this letter, the author accuses the city government of "antagonizing" business owners and acting without concern for public safety by choosing to create a "four-lane highway" through the heart of Cheviot. It is clear that the author has been given some faulty information.

'Backdoor' closing on Oak Hills http://communitypress.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/C2/20090313/VAV02/903130312/ Two years ago, the Oak Hills school board adopted what they called a "millage transfer." They simply renamed a portion of their property tax. It meant an unvoted property tax increase on the district's homeowners. Dusty Rhodes is Hamilton County auditor. He lives in Delhi Township.

U.S. House: District 1 - Steve Driehaus
Driehaus explains no vote on bill http://communitypress.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/C2/20090313/VAV02/903130359/ Since going to Washington in January, I have supported several important measures that will help an economy in crisis and improve a broken health care system. The president has signed a law that will create or save 7,100 jobs in the 1st District, cut taxes, and begin to rebuild our infrastructure. Congress has passed legislation that will help families facing foreclosure stay in their homes, and provide health care coverage to an additional 120,000 Ohio children. When I voted "yes" on those bills, my first, most important consideration was whether I was voting in the interest of the 1st District. That will always be my top priority as your Congressman. Steve Driehaus represents the 1st District in the U.S. House of Representatives. He lives in Price Hill.

I'll be in Cincy March 17th and 18th (Tues & Wed)
I want to say that some of the Proctor family went to the westside. There are some gems on Cleves Warsaw near the Western Hills Country Club with one house built as rescent as the late 80's early 90's supposedly being built by a member of the Proctor family. These homes straddle the fence in being called mansions yet some give off that vibe. (I'll admit they don't even come close to Indian Hill, but some resemble Madison Ave.) http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&FORM=LMLTCP&cp=qhm3427ydf4p&style=b&lvl=2&tilt=-90&dir=0&alt=-1000&scene=35195715&phx=0&phy=0&phscl=1&encType=1
