Bill to crimp payday lenders House version sets 28% cap; now on to Senate BY JON CRAIG | [email protected] http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080501/NEWS01/805010336 COLUMBUS - The Ohio House passed one of the toughest payday-lending bills in the nation Wednesday despite last-minute political jockeying that nearly derailed it. The state legislation would set a 28 percent cap on annual interest and fees on payday loans, blamed for contributing to a steep rise in consumer debt, bankruptcies and home foreclosures in Ohio. However, there's still time for lobbyists and legislators to change House Bill 545 as it gets debated in the Ohio Senate, starting next week.

Ohio payday lending regulation
^So you see nothing wrong with this industry, huh? Free Market, right! This country is in a mess right now due to irresponsible lending practices that DO take advantage of people who in reality are not ready, able, or in a position to pay back these loans.

Cincinnati Bengals Discussion
Couldn't resist! I have followed this guy since Alabama. I would love to see him play here. Alexander a Bengal? BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected] Shaun Alexander, cut loose by Seattle less than two weeks ago, will be contacting his favorite boyhood team, the Bengals. At least the Bengals will have a chance to talk about it. “Making calls to teams. Bengals are on our list!” Jim Steiner, Alexander's agent, told The Enquirer in an e-mail Wednesday. Coach Marvin Lewis said the team is optimistic that tailbacks Rudi Johnson (hamstring) and Chris Perry (ankle, lower leg) will return to health and the field in 2008. There is depth with Kenny Watson. There is the untapped potential of DeDe Dorsey, who has been a regular during the offseason at the facility. Sunbury village administrator Dave Martin said the master plan once again is being sought because of the village's anticipated growth in the years ahead. He said village officials last pursued a master plan in 2004. Martin said the panel of village zoning commission officials ranked the four competing firms after the meeting and selected Bird Houk Collaborative of Gahanna. The other three companies interviewed were Cincinnati-based Kinzelman, Kline and Gossman, McKenna Associates of Hudson, and Kleinger and Associates of Westchester. Those three firms were ranked second through fourth in that order. MORE: http://www.thisweeknews.com/live/content/sunbury/stories/2008/04/27/0427sumasterplan_ln.html

These types of businesses will not be missed in many parts of the state. Payday loans to be slashed THE ASSOCIATED PRESS http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/AB/20080430/NEWS01/304300024/ COLUMBUS, Ohio -- One of the nation's strictest crackdowns on payday lending set to pass the Ohio House Wednesday would slash customer charges to a fraction of current rates and limit borrowers to four of the short-term loans a year. Industry representatives say the proposal's cap of 28 percent annual interest undoubtedly would put lenders out of business. The businesses generally charge about $15 for every $100 borrowed on a two-week loan, which will be equivalent to a 391 percent annual interest rate. Under the 28 percent annual interest rate proposed, borrowers would owe about $2.50 for every $100 borrowed for two weeks.

Cincinnati: Downtown: 84.51°
How cool would it be to have an old fashioned height competition like the Chrysler/Empire state in the early 20th century with a new 5th/Race Tower and QCS. I know, it's a pipe dream but all it takes is Dahoney finding a new company wanting to relocate a HQ's here. Moving on at 5th & Race BY KEITH T. REED | [email protected] After waiting 10 years for a development of some sort to rise at Fifth and Race streets, the city of Cincinnati is looking for a new developer to build there. In a Thursday memo to the mayor and city council, City Manager Milton Dohoney Jr. said he was “aggressively pursue alternatives” after officially terminating the city’s contract at the site with developer Eagle Realty Group. In an interview this afternoon, Dohoney said he still envisions a “marquee” project there anchored by mid-priced housing that would attract young professionals. "To me, it’s a non-starter if it doesn’t have that in there. We need to have a housing option that is attractive and attainable for the young professional demographic,” Dohoney said, though he added the development did not need to be strictly residential. Give Willie Hell for putting the streetcar down when YOU are not on there. Seems to me, he sounds like he is for when he talks to you, but once you hang up, he goes right back to putting it down. Put him on the spot and ask why everyone on WLW is so Anti-Cincy. There is more to this city than just Kenwood. (which is extremely over-rated) AFTER SHOW: Nice work John!! This guy is clueless and never leaves Kenwood. He is stuck in a 90's

^Agreed! Anyone have any ideas as to WHO would likely be the most influential person in power to maybe get something like this started? I mean mayors, senators, etc. Maybe even the current owners (in New Orleans) would be a good start obviously. They may like the idea since I am sure they are aware of the history of this ship with Cincy. I know I am thinking ahead and they may already have something else planned for it, but if this were to ever happen, NOW'S THE TIME.
